the brown and white vol 113 no 19 lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday november 15 2005 all the lehigh news first 1 blacks in freshman class total 19 by madelyn king news writer minority enrollment down 27 percent over past four years nineteen members of the class of 2009 - one of the largest class es in lehigh history — are black according to dean of admissions and financial aid eric kaplan between 2001 and 2005 the number of minority students applying to lehigh increased from 530 to 793 nearly a 50 per cent increase while the number accepted increased by almost 35 percent vice provost for institutional research steven devlin said the number of minority stu dents in the freshman class was 73 in 2001 the number of minority stu dents in the freshman class dropped to 53 in 2005 president of the black student union sonyajames 07 was unhappy with the number of black students in the freshman class the fact that there are only 19 african-american students out of the largest freshman class to come into lehigh is by far unac ceptable james said the num bers of african-americans at lehigh has been steadily decreas ing to the point where pretty soon there will be none typically there are about 30 to 40 black students in a b&w design by maggie greene the number of minorities accepted to lehigh increased from 292 to 393 between 2001 and 2005 the number of first-year student minorities attending lehigh however has dropped from 73 to 53 forum analyzes impact of afghanistan iraq wars by tiffany scheff students enrolled in history 43 united states since 1939 presented the impact of wars in afghanistan and iraq on u.s poli tics culture and society in a forum wednesday and thursday in rauch business center the forum consisted of 50 to 60 minute presentations on topics such as the antiwar movement u.s soldiers in com bat and video-gaming and war as enter tainment an open session for questions and critical discussion followed associate history professor john pettegrew said the forum was designed to provide a his torical context for the afghanistan and iraq wars and allow students to argue discuss and debate issues relating to the wars motivations for the iraq war oil is one reason for going to war with iraq but other factors such as political agendas also influenced the decision the presenters of oil and other motivations for the iraq war said there are between 45 billion and 100 billion barrels of undiscovered oil in iraq matthew reeser 09 said iraq's oil is some of the most cheaply produced in the world and the country's only valuable export which is why it is so important he said in the reconstruction phase you have to conserve your only export reeser said strategically united states involvement in iraq is not for monetary gain it's to keep other people from influ encing the price of oil adam davidson 08 said for democra cy to be implemented in iraq saddam hussein had to be taken out because he ordered the torture and deaths of 182,000 iraqis according to davidson it was hoped the fall of saddam would be followed by democracy in syria then possibly iran if one nation will adhere to democra cy then it will send an example and spread to the rest of the middle east davidson said presenters said the war can be consid ered a modern manifest destiny based on president bush's statement that freedom is god's gift to everybody in the world the presenters included reeser davidson michael garofalo 06 david meers 09 and lindsay shinbaum 08 news writer pb & j sandwiches fill local children's bellies by claire lefevre news writer students made nearly 300 peanut butter and jelly sand wiches to donate to local chil dren in the south bethlehem community at the university center on nov 8 and nov 10 in recognition of national hunger and homelessness awareness week miranda ford 06 and allison heinly 07 organized and attended this year's sand wich-making event many people do not know but the majority of the south bethlehem children are only eating two meals a day ford said they get breakfast and lunch through the school a team of community serv ice advocates recruited stu dents dining in the uc to b&w photo by nishika vidanage matt dilts 09 makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to donate to local children in an annual community service event prognosis of avian flu looks grim official says by david webster news writer treatment of the avian flu is difficult because each strain requires a different antiviral drug and rapid bird deaths prevent immunization dr.joxel garcia deputy director of the pan american health organization said wednesday garcia's speech entitled from bioterrorism to bird flu current biological threats facing our society was spon sored by the lehigh-united nations partnership and the mul ticultural affairs office also called bird flu avian flu garcia said is a type-a flu virus with a chemical code of hsni the virus's basic con struction is a flu cell covered in h5 and nl strains once the virus gets into your body the h5 attaches itself to cells such as those in the lungs the n1 then releases the virus into the body this situation has all the ele ments
