the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 18 friday november 11 2005 all the lehigh news first presidential search begins by greg shirk news writer the first meeting of the newly formed presidential search committee will be held today as part of the nationwide search for president gregory farrington's successor the committee created by james tanenbaum the chair man of the board of trustees and provost mohamed el aasser includes members from across the lehigh community donald mccullough the current president of the graduate student senate and cara diorio 07 the secretary of the undergraduate senate were selected to represent the student body on the commit tee i think one of the reasons they asked me to serve is my role as a student senate mem ber because we are an elected representative for students diorio said so i am hopeful there will be ways for me to share information with the committee diorio said her involvement in a leadership position through the senate helped her to be selected as a member of the committee diorio said she is receptive to students input i am very open-minded to all candidates and interested in students views and opinions diorio said both diorio and mccullough said they will look to both the graduate and undergraduate student bodies for input during the selection process as president of the graduate senate i have gotten to know a diverse group of stu dents with many different edu cational goals mccullough vigil planned to help stop hate by sarah mcclutchy news writer faculty and spectrum mem bers responded to the four bias-motivated incidents which all occurred within the span of two weeks by planning a stop the hate vigil sched uled for tuesday at 5 p.m on the university center lawn the rain location will be packer memorial church students faculty and staff will be able to pledge their commitment to stop the hate by signing pledge cards in the upper uc on the day of the vigil according to a campus-wide e-mail from dean of students sharon basso the incidents involved the defacing of educa tional bulletin boards and graf fiti in common areas with a racial slur in one case and lan guage related to sexual orienta tion in the other three speakers get heated in abortion debate by a.j berends news writer the abortion debate between pro-choice advo cate kathryn kolbert and pro-life advocate scott klusendorf on thursday in packard auditorium became heated as klusendorf accused kolbert of being rude and audience members began to com pete for an opportunity to question the speakers nathan punwani 08 of the vast right wing conspiracy political newspaper moderated life v choice the great debate which consisted of 15 minute opening speeches 10-minute rebuttals and five-minute closing speeches from each side and two-minute answers to audience questions at the end klusendorf opened the debate by introducing his idea that the unborn are human and become human at conception klusendorf repeated his posi tion throughout the debate saying if the unborn are not human then i concede klusendorf showed a 90-second silent film clip of the aftermath of an abortion of an 11 week-old fetus some audience members cov ered their eyes when they saw the blood-coy b&w photo by amy deutsch ered fetus which was smaller than a quarter kolbert gave background information about the 1973 roe v wade case which legalized abortion and the 1992 planned parenthood v casey case in which she represented planned parenthood kolbert said she hopes we may never go back to a time when women must jeopardize their lives to get an abortion she also said her central belief is that a woman's life and health is more important than the human's she carries kolbert became so exasperated with klusendorf repeating his argument that an embryo is human that she said the point is not that the embryo is human - of course it is that's not the issue kolbert interrupted klusendorf multiple times and klusendorf in turn accused kolbert of being rude kolbert would constantly interrupt the pro-life speaker when he was speaking punwani said finally he said she'd been rude to him then peo ple in the audience stood up and said no you've been rude to her dr klusendorf punwani said after the audience accused pro-choice advocate kathryn kolbert and pro-life advocate scott klusendorf became impatient with each other during their abortion debate on tuesday in packard laboratory auditorium sororities may face quota increase by lindsay mover assistant news editor sorority members are con cerned that the large freshman class may have an increased inter est in sororities this year which would result in higher quotas and the possibility of limited sorority housing for rising juniors according to eric kaplan dean of admission and financial aid the class of 2009 is the largest class in the period from the early 1990s to 2005 the years for which he has access to enrollment data there are 1,223 students in the class of 09 but the university usually tries to enroll between 1,130 and 1,145 students each year kaplan said the quota is the number of bids a sorority is required to extend at the end of formal soror ity recruitment it is determined by dividing the number of women involved in recruitment during the preference round by the number of chapters accord ing to wilkinson and greek life coordinator andrea weber the concern about a quota increase probably developed from student discussion about the larger freshman class not from speculation by the office of frater nity and sorority affairs wilkinson said we're not even really specu lating wilkinson said i think the way the rumors about a high er quota started is just students talking about how there are more women panhellenic council president meredith anderson 06 said it is important to remember that the quota for each chapter is not based on the size of the freshman class while there are more fresh man women on campus if the enrollment numbers in recruit ment are similar to recent years see search page 3 see great debate page 2 see quota page 4 see vigil page 4 sports 13,16 news 1-4 football 13 krimson and kreme 2 basketball 16 soccer 16 i^^hhlhll bw.lehjqh.edu
