the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 12 friday october 21 2005 all the lehigh news first campus run-a-thon raises 1,200 for fire department b&w photo by amanda wright left to right alex fehring 08 rob logan 08 and seth williams 06 ran in kappa sigma and delta gamma's run-a-thon tuesday participants donated 2 for every mile they ran a total of 1,200 was raised for the bethlehem fire department greeks support checkpoint distribute info pamphlets by samantha gladstone news writer student senate and the panhellenic council arranged for members of greek organi zations to stand at the check point at the entrance of the hill and hand out information about the dangers of drunk driving during young alumni weekend the arrangement was made to encourage the lehigh police department to reinstate the checkpoint alpha phi's members volun teered to distribute information about the dangers of drunk driving at the checkpoint alpha phi member ashley saunders 08 said with the recent party-school rating lehigh needs to continue to remind students about the seri ous issue of drunk driving although the checkpoint was not necessarily there to prevent drunk driving i think we deterred it saunders said we cannot overlook the issue that underage drinking is a big factor at this school and drunk driving must be addressed in order to keep people safe on campus ariel weissman 08 of alpha phi handed out pam phlets at the checkpoint we feel that drunk driving is a big issue at lehigh and the checkpoint is a vital part of pre venting further danger weissman said we handed out information about dui and blood alcohol level and we hope that we made more peo ple aware of the situation and the importance of reinstating the checkpoint members of alpha omicron pi sorority also handed out pamphlets at the checkpoint paige cullen 08 of aopi said she thought that support ing the checkpoint was effec tive it is important for lehigh students to realize that the checkpoint's assets outweigh its liabilities to our community cullen said i am confused why lehigh would have taken the checkpoint away cullen said lehigh can't necessarily control all of the underage drinking however they can control drunk driving and to me it seems like they gave up cullen said originally started by the lehigh police the checkpoint has deterred both drunk drivers and intruders from entering the hill friday and saturday nights panhel member sarah vanderbeck 07 said the greek students are in particular dan ger without the checkpoint vanderbeck said people who do not go to lehigh could potentially come into the hous es and make the environment unsafe for students panhel was involved because we felt it was important for the safety of all students vanderbeck said jake natalini 08 said the senate agreed that students lives are in danger without the checkpoint student senate ideally would like to see the lehigh police department bring the checkpoint back not just have a checkpoint randomly through out the year natalini said this hill is crawling with crowds of people on thursday friday or saturday and the roads are dark and winding natalini said the potential risk of someone getting struck from an automobile is far too great especially if there are stu dents driving under the mflu ence natalini said the senate rec ognized that it is illegal for the lehigh police to presume with out probable cause that some one is driving under the influ ence but the checkpoint assist ed in keeping drunk driving at a minimum more students natalini said would avoid driving at all if they knew they would have to be driving past police officers later in the evening community questions bethworks defends casino project by morgan white news writer barry gosin a partner in bethworks now and ceo of newmark and company defended the development of the bethlehem steel site during a community forum at broughal middle school on monday the south bethlehem historical society hosted the forum to help answer the ques tions raised by community members this is important for the city said maureen dresen who serves on the board of the historical society one of the reasons we sponsored this forum is because it is important to talk about the positive aspects of what bethworks now has planned gosin said bethworks now the investment group that owns the old bethlehem steel plant plans for the 129-acre site to include restaurants retail stores a museum a casino a pbs live studio and possibly a residential area many bethlehem residents questioned how the plans would affect the existing com merce in town and whether beth works now would be stay ing if the project was success ful the residents also dis cussed the necessity of the casi no lehigh history professor of practice kirnberley carrell smith is a south side resident who also serves on the board of the historical society a lot of people see bethlehem steel as what shaped us and it did carrell smith said people aren't com fortable with the casino but this is about preserving a lega cy south bethlehem residents who attended had various opinions about the casino despite the insistence of bethworks now said the casino would attract the retail stores and restaurants necessary to make the project a success and would help boost the economy in the town personally i think a target or wal-mart would be more obnoxious to this community and its commerce than a casi no gosin said he also discussed the idea that the museum would not be enough of an anchor tenant to attract the number of retail stores and restaurants neces sary this is our ticket to devel op the site gosin said the gaming license will drive the retail stores to come las vegas sands corp has agreed to develop a slot machine casino there if bethlehem receives one of the 14 gaming licenses pennsylvania is issuing for slot machine gambling newmark and company which has done restoration in new york city such as the flat iron building and dumbo wishes to preserve the build ings as much as possible it's these kinds of architec tural projects that define a neighborhood gosin said we see a lot of residual bene fits from doing this the right way we love the architecture and we want to preserve it as much as we can this project is still in the planning stage bethworks now there to prevent drunk driving i think we deterred it saunders said we cannot overlook the issue that underage drinking is a big factor at this school and drunk driving must be addressed in order to
