the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 11 all the lehigh news first tuesday october 18 2005 farrington announces june resignation by patrick thornton editor in chief early in president gregory farrington's tenure a crew team member approached him and said the team wanted to come to dinner at his house but didn't know how to get invited well i guess my wife and i invite you farrington said although farrington obliged he had one unanswered ques tion in his mind a week before the scheduled dinner how many crew team members were there he assumed there were approximately 25 a nice size for dinner at his house he was shocked to find out the team didn't have 25 members but rather 95 it's like inviting locusts to your house farrington said they eat everything in sight apparently farrington has a thing for locusts every year since that meeting the crew team has been invited back for an annual dinner at his house in the successive years the team members took up a cause they began showing up with suggestive gifts - t-shirts hats - all with the purpose of convincing farrington to make crew a varsity sport farrington caved women's crew is now varsity the state of the university it's these interactions with students that farrington will miss the most when he retires in june from his post as president of lehigh he announced his resignation during the annual state of the university speech on oct 7 farrington has served for eight years at lehigh it was the longest time period he has held any job in his career the president of the united states only gets eight years to lead the country he said dur ing his speech if it's good enough for him - or perhaps soon her - it's certainly good enough for me the decision wasn't sudden farrington said he has been contemplating his resignation since the summer and officially arrived at his decision in september summertime is when people like me actually get a chance to think farrington said the rest of the time you're cheering the football team and doing things that people like me do in an e-mail to lehigh staff farrington wrote one of the greatest responsibilities of a president is knowing when it's the right moment to step down in fact one of the greatest challenges and opportunities a president and a board must face is knowing when to pass the baton of leadership farrington wrote during farrington's speech he reminisced about advice his mother gave him leave while the lights are still on well the lights are more than on he said they are shining brightly farrington is the first to admit not everything went as planned he said it's part of the territory anybody doing my job and anybody doing any job has a long list of things they wished they had done better he said despite his shortcomings he said he has come out far ahead i think on balance the stuff that worked well greatly out weighs those that didn't he said still farrington will not be leaving south mountain quite yet he will stay on as distin guished university service pro fessor a role he said is still in the formative stages it will be interesting to invent he said the first season-ending leg injury see story page 16 ambassador defends iran's nuclear energy by nicole nigro news writer iran will not use nuclear weapons but needs to develop nuclear power as a feasible energy source iranian ambassador to the united nations javad zarif told a group of 31 lehigh students who gath ered in his office in new york city on oct 13 zarif was supposed to visit the university to speak in the u.n ambassadorial lecture series one of the fruits of lehigh's non governmental organization status and the lehigh-u.n initiative zarif however is not allowed to travel more than 25 miles outside of the united nations and was not able to make it students were then given the opportunity to go to him lehigh students said they reached a greater understanding of iran and its relations with the united states because of this rare meeting doug moquet 08 said he was intrigued by zarif s discussion on iran's nuclear development meeting face-to-face with the iranian ambassador was a truly unique and insightful experience moquet said bill hunter director of global union who also works closely with the lehigh-un initiative said he regrets zarif can't come to the campus to address a wider audience zarif allowed for a completely open dialogue with students for over an hour and said no ques tion was off-limits stuart schnabolk 09 partici pated in the discussion with zarif it was intriguing having my questions about iran answered by their actual ambassador schnabolk said there is a lot of misunder standing that exists here about iran and in iran about the west zarif said zarif said oil is a finite source and the world needs to diversify their energy sources two options are hydroelectric and solar ener gy he said iran is expanding these resources but it threatens archaeological sites and some iranians feel it is destroying cul tural heritage zarif said nuclear energy is an impor tant alternative he said zarif said that the fear of developing nuclear energy is the belief that this technology could quickly be translated into the development of nuclear weapons although fuel cycle technolo gy in iran allows the conversion of plutonium to 3.5 percent purity that is needed for fuel 95 percent purity is needed for a nuclear bomb iran is nowhere near this technology to make a promise that iran will not use nuclear weapons as a first strike — we are not even close to that zarif said the government realizes the development of weapons would make iran a justifiable target zarif said the government believes nuclear weapons are not in our interest but iran cannot be deprived of nuclear energy he said zarif also explained that through restrictions of the international atomic energy agency inspectors must be allowed to visit these sites at any time iran has actually expanded these restrictions to allow inspec tors to be stationed 24 hours a day zarif said this will avoid speculations similar to those in iraq that things were hidden and moved when inspectors were coming zarif spoke about the use of missiles indicating that iran has promised they will never use mis siles as a first strike iran devel oped missiles because of the iran iraq war at which time iraq had missiles and iran felt it needed protection he said iran has never made a first strike or started a war zarif said in 250 years we have never had a single incident of aggres sion close to that zarif said the government realizes the development of weapons would make iran a justifiable target zarif said the government believes nuclear weapons are not in our interest but iran cannot be deprived of nuclear energy he said zarif also explained that through restrictions of the international atomic energy agency inspectors must be allowed to visit these sites at any time iran has actually expanded these restrictions to allow inspec tors to be stationed 24 hours a day zarif said this will avoid speculations similar to those in iraq that things were hidden and moved when inspectors were coming zarif spoke about the use of missiles indicating that iran has promised they will never use mis siles as a first strike iran devel oped missiles because of the iran iraq war at
