the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 113 no 2 friday september 9 2005 all the lehigh news first 100 alcohol arrests made in two weeks by jayne carapezzi and kate mcloughlin bethlehem police arrest more than 10 times as many students as last year's first two weeks news editor managing editor online at least 100 lehigh students have been arrested for alcohol related offenses off campus since aug 26 more than a tenfold increase from the number of arrests at this point last year the number of arrests is not at all typical for the first week of classes sharon basso dean of students eighty-two of those arrests were upperclassmen this number of arrests is not at all typical for the first week of classes dean of students sharon basso said the bethlehem police have arrested exactly 100 students since aug 26 and the lehigh police cited a handful more indi cating that between 2 and 3 per cent of lehigh students have been arrested so far this semes ter last year at this point bethlehem police had arrested just seven students most of the offenses this year have been underage drinking chief of police edward shupp said but some other violations included open alcohol container viola tions public urination and disor derly conduct lieutenant joe kimock of the bethlehem police agreed the k number is high it's more than we've had in the past couple of years he said this year's numbers have been higher than last year's from the start during the weekend after the first week of class for the fall 2004 semester just five students were arrested by bethlehem police shupp said in 2005 that number was 49 explanations for the increase in arrests vary the bethlehem police received an 11,500 grant from the pennsylvania liquor control board this year in hopes that the money would help curb underage drinking kimock said one reason for the high number of arrests may be due to the grant which pays five extra officers to patrol the city streets for four hours of over time more officers are not on duty on a given night but the officers on duty are now being funded by the grant which means they cannot be called away from their patrols to pursue non-alcohol related crimes in the past if an emergency call was made the officers would leave to go to the emergency shupp said the goal is to reduce the problems associated with alcohol consumption in and around the campus kimock said the police want to send a strong message in the beginning of the year and hope to see a subsequent decrease in arrests and irresponsible behaviors kimock said i haven't gotten the chance to compare names but i hope we're not arresting the same kids kimock said and i hope they are telling their friends be smart stay in control shupp agreed that the police were cracking down early in the rathbone to be closed for two months by jillian kelly news writer rathbone hall is in great need of renovation according to sue flederbach director of dining services and will be closing for construction from nov 18 to jan 16 rathbone hall has had nothing done to it since the 19705 flederbach said students will have more food choices once rathbone is renovated because it has limit ed space for food now flederbach said the new rathbone will offer more food action stir-fry and much more flederbach said the action stir-fry is a large flat grill that brings a modern creative approach to grilling various food stations will also be added the students will love the changes said david joseph executive director of student auxiliary services we are bringing cooking out to the students it will really open up dining the renovation is designed to eliminate the line of stu dents often extending outside b&w photo by nishika vidanage the door and along the side walk changes to the structural layout of rathbone will decrease wait times by provid ing an organized way for stu dents to get lunch flederbach said that rathbone's layout will be more like a food court than a cafeteria jessica miely 06 said the new layout is a shame rathbone's known for its home cooking miely said it will lose it's hominess i feel like it won't be as much of a community many students said they are going to miss the friendly atmosphere and staff at rathbone i'm going to miss rathbone you always know the crowd said sarah walter 08 a gryphon in centennial 11 there is always a familiar face at rathbone walter said students are also concerned that the university center will be overcrowded while the pri mary dining hall for centennial i and ii is closed matt murphy 08 who has been eating lunch at rathbone daily since his freshman year said he is particularly worried about the impact of the renova tion i think that closing rathbone for renovation is going to cause long lines at the uc as well as deprive students of the more intimate dining set ting that rathbone creates he said i think it will be hard because the uc will be a lot more crowded walter said student concerns are well founded rathbone seats 275 students joseph said that the rathbone staff will be brought to the uc to help serve the increased number of students lehigh dining services will offer several new options for spring flederbach said the johnson dining room will be open to accommodate more students the dining room is located to the left of the main dining room in the lower uc vegetarian vegan and international food options rathbone will undergo a two-month renovation in november new food stations and an action stir-fry will be added to the
