the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 48 friday april 29 2005 all the lehigh news first dean departs for phi sig career by lauren rieders news writer michael carey assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs is leaving his position to become the executive director of phi sigma kappa fraternity and executive direc tor for the phi sigma kappa foundation carey's new position will require him to oversee the undergraduate fraternity for more than 80 college campuses across the nation he will also work closely with more than 868,000 alumni to get funding for phi sigma kappa as assistant dean of fraternity and sorority affairs for four years carey has played an integral role in implementing the greek life task force report it was just one piece of the puzzle in creat ing a task force to determine what should be done to ensure the future of greek life he said carey said his goal has always been to make a positive contribution to student life by ensuring the safety and success of the greek system i oversee the activity of the greek community from a day to-day night-to-night basis he said carey said he is leaving two legacies behind current greek students and alumni trust the office of fraternity and sorority affairs now more than ever before he said greek life has been strength ened through the task force initiative i hope people realize that the greek community is in a better place carey said he said he cares passionately about bringing the greek com munity to the next level i think we have the best greek life plan out of many nationwide he said carey said he admires the motivation of students to improve greek life the posi tive relations he has developed with greek students will make the position hard to leave he said lehigh has been generous to me in many ways he said deciding to leave lehigh was a tough decision for carey the personal and financial rewards at the new job are too hard to pass up he said it has always been one of his goals to move up in his profession he said that his new position will expand his passion for the greek commu nity some of the benefits of leav ing lehigh with experience in overseeing greek life include the knowledge and skills that he has developed while working here carey said environmentalist denounces pennsylvania's policy approach by desiree annunziato news writer dave maguire sierra club member said pennsylvania is the top trash dumping ground in the united states in a presentation on the local environment sunday in coxe hall the sierra club is a volun teer-based activist group that focuses on environmental organ ization and is comprised of near ly one million members world wide its purpose is to help the environment by addressing environmental issues that ordi narily go unnoticed maguire said with the natural beauty of the state pennsylvania should be taken care of instead of being taken for granted the natural landscapes of pennsylvania are slowly being torn down because somewhere someone wants to make a profit even if it is to the detriment of everyone else he said maguire talked about the uses of water and explained the topog raphy of the lehigh valley and its neighboring counties he gave a history of the area back to the ice age and explained the formation of the delaware water gap where he said the water got stuck but found a way to erode over the barrier b&w photo by joe pepe besides being the top trash dumping state in the country pennsylvania imports more garbage than it produces he said he said the local bethlehem landfill holds 12 percent of the state's garbage the grand central sanitary landfill holds 37 percent and the chrin brothers landfill hold 19 percent however much of this garbage comes from out-of-state sources for example the grand central sanitary landfill gets 54 percent of its garbage from new jersey while the chrin brothers landfill gets 38 percent from new jersey he said dave maguire from the sierra club discusses the environmental problems and possibilities for improvement during his presentation in coxe hall sunday part of the progressive student alliance's one world forum women undress for photo project by carly schwartzwald news writer five women have been pho tographed for the r.e.a.l women project a series of nude photographs and personal statements that are expected to debut this fall inspired by the century project the r.e.a.l women project is intended to provide an oudet for women to express themselves through nudity the photographs are more about freedom of expression and individualism than any thing else said alex milspaw 07 co-coordinator of the proj ect we are in no way trying to objectify women we want to express the voices behind the photographs the coordinators of the project said they plan to create an exhibit that will emphasize the project's message of expres sion individualism and free dom they plan to have femi nist speakers discuss issues involving the photographs so spectators will be able to grasp the true essence behind the project the exhibit will probably last two nights and be in a closed-off location which will
