the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 47 tuesday april 26 2005 all the lehigh news first gandhi defends nonviolence by rita shankar news writer the events of sept 11 2001 brought war to the doorstep of the united states said peace activist arun gandhi in a lecture at packard auditorium on wednesday gandhi the grandson of peacemaker mahatma gandhi visited lehigh to present a lecture titled nonviolence in the age of terrorism reflecting on the world after sept 11 2001 gandhi said it was important to con tinue to spread the word of nonviolence gandhi said he doesn't think nonviolence is harder to sell after sept 11 2001 he said that after the attacks demand for his speeches grew tremendously and that he had reservation backlogged up until next year i thought no one would call on me to speak but since then invitations have sky rocketed he said in a sense it's very encouraging gandhi said he thought most peace activists set unre alistic goals for themselves i think it is very difficult to be peace activists unless you set realistic goals he said we have to know our limitations we have to know that we can't make that big of a difference generally when people get frustrated with the failures of their peaceful plans they get angered and want to join the gang gandhi is an author jour nalist and founder of the m.k gandhi institute for nonviolence he has also done social work to help promote nonvio lence during his collegiate years i began teaching informal ly since 91 since i had no doctorate said gandhi i sold grandfather's letters to fund the institute now the institute will survive from these lectures and conferences gandhi created the center for social unity in india and delivers many lectures to help spread his grandfather's mes sage of peace when i see common peo ple doing great things i am inspired he said if you look closely you can find inspiration in all of us many students enjoyed the lecture and found it relevant to current events he presented nonviolence very well in a way that is per tinent to our world today said hayley bonsteel 08 other students shared simi lar reactions concerning the du kappa sig aopi top greek week by karen welby news writer greek week ended friday as gamma phi beta sorority won the week's events and delta upsilon and kappa sigma fraternities tied for first place grace hall was filled with hundreds of people who paid to come to watch the delta gamma sorority and alpha tau omega fraternity dance compe tition the final event of the week friday night each house had teams of three to twelve freshmen who created dances and performed them one of the crowd's favorite performances was sigma alpha mu's reenactment of the jingle bell rock scene from mean girls i'm very impressed said laura spessard 06 i didn't think the dances could get any better than last year but the houses definitely outdid them selves this year sigma phi epsilon fraternity was the winner of the men's dance competition alpha tau omega fraternity took second place and kappa sigma and sigma chi fraternities tied for third place alpha omicron pi sorority won the women's dance com petition with delta gamma sorority in second place and gamma phi beta sorority in third being on stage with the girls performing the dance we worked so hard on was an unforgettable experience said alexi rodriguez 08 an aopi sister the crowd went wild and the whole night was an amazing time actually win ning was just a bonus many of the participating teams spent several hours per fecting their routines and cos tumes kappa alpha fraternity hosted a beach volleyball b&w photo by sara meade kappa alpha fraternity hosted a beach volleyball tournament friday nate martian 05 a theta chi brother prepares to spike the ball recycling initiatives gain support by claire lefevre news writer leadership lehigh ran a recycling drive called operation tin can drive that ran from april 17 until sunday this was the first year the drive took place at lehigh and the volunteers on the committee hope this will become a yearly event on lehigh's campus the subcommittee distrib uted yellow bags in freshman dorms and in any sorority or fra ternity that wished to participate we were very pleased with the number of fraterni ties and sororities that were interested in helping out the project and participating in the event said matt katyl 07 the leader of the project about 10 fraternities partici pated and filled bags for us during the week the group will be collect ing the bags and counting the tin cans during the week in order to determine the level of success of the drive the cans that have been collected for the past week will be given to the lehigh recycling services we are hoping to get a better estimate of how much success the project will have and then we will be able to donate the cans directly to an aluminum recycling company and get money in return from them to donate to an organi zation katyl said katyl said that the main goal of the project was to raise awareness concerning recycling on campus the main goal that we were trying to accomplish with this year's drive was to have people realize that there's a problem with recycling on our campus but it is everyone's own personal responsibility to change it katyl said many lehigh students agreed with katyl about the perceived problems with recy cling on campus kendyl van hoesen 06 who had not heard about the project said she feels recy cling is not taken very seri ously on this campus there is no
