the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 43 tuesday april 12 2005 all the lehigh news first sodexho dining contract renewed by kate mcloughlin news editor sodexho's contract to be lehigh's dining services provider has been extended for five years continuing the 53-year relation ship between the company and the university and bringing some changes to dining services changes can be expected for students faculty and staff as we move forward into the new con tract david joseph executive director of residential services said in an e-mail there are pro posals for renovations and improvements in the university center food court rathbone dining hall and uc cort/johnson dining rooms along with some other changes associated with operational issues such as meal plans special pro grams adjusted hours etc 1 joseph said he couldn't com ment further on the changes stu dents can expect because they are still in the planning stages there will be changes made to the contract as we are always looking to improve our dining services and expectations change after awhile joseph said some changes center around financial terms which i can not discuss but most deal with proposed ren ovations and new options that will be available on campus the previous contract expires at the end of this semester the university began a search earlier this year to consider other food service providers lehigh has been pleased with the overall level of service wood sodexho has provided yet we felt a competitive process would be beneficial to the univer sity in the long run joseph said no preference was given to the incumbent contractor joseph said and all companies were evaluated using the same criteria a review team composed of students faculty and staff evaluat ed proposals from sodexho aramark avi foodsystems and bon appetit and interviewed the competing contractors then it made a recommendation to peggy plympton vice president for finance and administration b&w photo by bj shepard who made the final decision in consultation with president gregory farrington he said the review team included a graduate student and representa tives from student senate and rha as well as staff from confer ence and special housing services facilities planning and the alumni association among others the decision to continue the relationship with sodexho was predicated on several factors which included a long-standing record of excellent performance by a company with demonstrated strong regional and district sup port joseph said it was also felt that sodexho successfully chal students modeled business attire sportswear and evening formal wear at the lehigh's next top model fashion show thursday night in the asa packer room the event raised 1,249.35 for breast cancer research fashion funds cancer research by rita shankar news writer leadership lehigh's sub group fashion 4 a cure raised 1249.35 for breast cancer research through the student run fashion show and campus wide competition lehigh's next top model on thursday in the asa packer room hosted by marinee cabrera class of 2005 president the function opened to enthusiastic cheering and whistling from the audience michelle samuels assistant dean of students walked the runway first they wanted to make change happen and they want ed to do something fun and exciting samuels said the models showcased busi ness attire sportswear and evening formal wear the 35 models divided into 12 groups of three the groups represented were national society of black engineers progressive students alliance gryphon leadership class kappa alpha theta fra ternity pi beta phi alpha chi omega alpha omega pi delta gamma and alpha gamma delta sororities the field hock ey swim and volleyball teams the winner was a chi o brooke zumas 07 and megan ward 07 represented leadership lehigh their responsibilities included organiz ing models and dealing with the local and on-campus sponsors there's a lot sponsors who helped with the event ward said sponsors provided both food and items to sell or auction off to raise money for the event the group sold bracelets and people paid to vote zumas said students could vote more than once each vote cost 25 cents and all proceeds went to the national breast cancer research foundation fashion 4 a cure members hoped to raise more than 4,000 but fell short of that goal cbe dean takes post at american university by jocelyn raskin news writer dean dick durand of the college of business and economics has accepted the posi tion of dean of the kogod school of business at american university but will remain at lehigh until the end of the semester durand's accomplishments at lehigh include the creation of the financial sendees lab and the strengthening of undergraduate and mba online programs provost mohamed el-aasser said in a press release durand also implemented the integrated business and engineering program which reflected the positive collabora tions and establishments he implemented between colleges i think he did a very good job while he was dean and we're all sorry to see him go said tony o'brien professor of eco nomics o'brien said the ibe program has helped to raise the school's visibility and attract new students he's helped raise the profile of the college nationally o'brien said the college is bet ter known now than it once was durand is recognized for improving the college internally as well deans impose standards oversee programs and raise see sodexho page 5 see model page 6 see durand page 4 softball team
