the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 35 tuesday march 1 2005 all the lehigh news first housing selection under fire by keenan pontoni assistant news editor the housing selection process which will conclude with room selection night on mar 3 has been facing student criticism in response to the dis parity in housing options rising sophomores who entered the lottery have been voicing their opposition against the process partly in response to the new policy that requires sec ond-year students to live on campus many students say the housing process is unfair because they are now forced to choose among limited housing options while it is nice that we have the option to live in different types of housing i feel it-would be better if sophomores who are required to live on campus had the opportunity to explore all the housing options said victoria berenholz 08 rising sophomores will have the choice between apartment at trembley and sayre parks suites at brodhead house rooms in warren square houses and dorm rooms at taylor college thornburg and drinker houses among options not offered to sopho mores in the general lottery are the campus square suites ozzie breiner director of residential services said the variety in housing options which is not as prevalent at other schools is a positive attribute to campus housing he said the options allow for most students to get the housing they want instead of having to live in a uniform housing struc ture that only some people would want we try to offer housing that's varied and can appeal to a wide variety of students breiner said i think it would be a mistake to say every stu dent wants to live in campus square a majority of the time students who live in the fourth floor of drinker want to squat their rooms and stay there breiner said there may be differences in the housing options but the quality of the housing experience is equal among the various choices we pretty much offer die exact same things and accom modations breiner said yes there are some facilities that are air-conditioned and others that aren't some have kitchens and some don't but the quality of housing experience you can receive in a warren square house or a brodhead suite can be equal if not better than what you would get living in trembley or campus square breiner said the housing options at lehigh give students choices they would not other psa promotes fair trade coffee by stefan siwiecki the progressive student alliance spearheaded fair trade awareness week last week an effort aimed at rais ing consciousness regarding fair trade products on cam pus psa worked with chaplain lloyd steffen and various dining services managers to organize fair trade week the group held samplings of fair trade coffees in the upper university center on wednesday thursday and friday from 8 a.m to 12 p.m fair trade coffee repre sents a trade situation that truly benefits the coffee grow ers said psa secretary hannah behrmann 07 fair trade coffee is coffee that has been sold by the growers in a cooperative behrmann said generally a grower will sell the coffee beans to several middlemen news writer online who will resell it to a compa ny like folgers or seattle's best or starbucks this system is highly exploitative for the grower because the buyer will wait until the last possible moment to buy the coffee driving the price way down she said when growers form a cooperative they sell all of their coffee at the same time directly to the company this gives them more leveraging power and allows them to get a fair price gen erally eight to 10 times more than they would usually get through the former system behrmann said psa members said that the future of expanding fair trade awareness at lehigh is high on their list of priorities fair trade techniques are usually the difference between starvation and survival behrmann said the psa has successfully b&wphoto by lindsay keller jim blaney 08 a member of the progressive student alliance is shown serving a free sample of fair trade coffee to hieu nguyen 08 police find students naked painted by kate mcloughlin news editor several males were found naked and covered in gteen paint and a freshman male was found severely intoxicated when lehigh police responded to a fire alarm at kappa sigma fraternity on feb 20 the police responded to a fire alarm at kappa sigma and determined it was a false alarm due to the fire alarm station being pulled by someone edward shupp chief of the lehigh university police said in an e-mail the men were found inside the house shupp said and an investigation about this incident is underway the intoxicated student was brought to st luke's hospital for treatment according to a police report anytime there is an inci dent which occurs and it appears that hazing may have been involved the police first conduct a criminal investiga tion shupp said as is our practice ... an investigation is underway into this incident shupp explained the proto col the university follows when an investigation is underway hazing is a crime in the state of pennsylvania shupp said once the police investi gation is concluded and a deter mination is made if criminal charges are warranted or not then the information is turned over to the dean of students office of student conduct where they usually conduct an investi gation to determine if any pos sible violations of lehigh's stu dent code of conduct occurred as hazing is also a violation of the code of conduct as well as the law eric natelson 06 presi dent of kappa sig did not comment on the incident travis eisemann 07 a gryphon in dravo house said he received an e-mail asking gryphons to report on what they knew about the incident the e-mail included information about some residents who had come back to their buildings after being painted green eisemann said he did not see students who were involved so he was unable to reply to the e mail
