the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 33 tuesday february 22 2005 all the lehigh news first police arrest prowler suspect by patrick fulton senior news writer bethlehem police took a man into custody wednesday after two students reported he was peering into a student's off-campus home according to police the suspect frederick hernandez was caught after looking in the front door bedroom win dows and mailbox of an off campus student residence on polk street at 9:43 p.m wednesday the male and female stu dent both 21 confronted hernandez who allegedly struggled with his words and said in a thick accent he was looking for a friend of his hernandez then quickly left the scene one of the residents noticed a similarity between hernandez and the composite sketch of the prowler and immediately called police police said the prowler is in his 30s or 40s weighs about 200 pounds and has a european accent hernandez was spotted again by one of the students as police arrived at the house when police confronted him he told officers the same story about looking for a friend police said he was then taken into custody on the 400 block of east fifth street a search of the man's 1998 ford ranger which hernandez agreed to pro duced a small amount of mar ijuana and drug parapherna lia the suspect was taken to the bethlehem police department where he was questioned by detectives pho tographed fingerprinted and released he was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall and 34 years old with close-cut hair he was wearing a black coat and black beanie at the time of the incident hernandez was charged with prowling at night loiter ing possession of marijuana and possession of drug para phernalia while an initial report has been filed an investigation to determine whether hernandez has any connec tion to the lehigh prowler has begun the prowler is wanted for breaking into off-campus resi dences last semester and watching women sleep in some cases stroking their hair no victims have reported physical assault the brown and white first reported on the prowler in a sept 1 article at least six such incidents were reported since august the sounds of black history month b&w photo by rae albee faces of black history a live show that celebrated well-known black historical figures took place friday at 8 p.m in lamberton hall the show was part of a series of events to celebrate black history month melismatics release first cd by carter hempleman news writer the melismatics lehigh's first student-run a capella group released its first full length cd thursday thursday night at the wildflower cafe the melismatics performed their debut album just what you need the album draws inspira tion from popular artists such as john mayer incubus and michelle branch as well as renowned musicians like stevie wonder and the beatles we get to sing any song we want said nate zander 05 grand poobah of the melismatics members bring in songs and we all try it and see if it works the band has no faculty advisers and does not work with any outside producers their first cd was com pletely student-produced the melismatic's technical director ryan hansen 05 said we did the whole cd on two microphones in my basement the cd was a stepping stone for the band to get their music heard by a larger audi ence the group has been togeth er for more than four years they say the cd is their biggest accomplishment yet no one profits from the cd's sales hansen said our goal is to break even and if we have any money left over we want to buy some more equipment so we can progress as a group thursday's album profits were partially split with the wildflower cafe which did not charge a cover the wildflower was packed full of students and faculty by 10 p.m they sounded great i campus aesthetics to change by fall by patrick fulton senior news writer imagine a sleepy campus with acres of tree-dotted lawns unmarred by parking lots drive ways and roads picture a wide avenue traveling from a river through a city and ending at a gateway flanked by large stone columns people stroll freely without signs or crosswalks telling them where to go this is not a college in some far-off land it is lehigh 100 years ago today at lehigh roads cut through campus nearly every where there is room for traffic five thousand students walking to and from class are forced to share roads with cars buses delivery trucks and service vehicles pedestrians are con stantly on edge and drivers have few places to park today the campus finds itself in need of yet another change president gregory farrington addressed this need last month with the announce ment of the campus restoration and enhancement plan beginning in may sever al locations on campus will be put under
