the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 31 tuesday february 15 2005 all the lehigh news first undefeated cowboys spank mountain hawks by patrick thornton and rich shanfeld managing editor online assistant sports editor the mountains hawks got their big rematch with the no 1 team sometimes once is enough a record crowd of 5,828 at stabler arena witnessed oklahoma state university's shocking 24-9 victory over lehigh before the cowboys poured on humiliation lehigh fought valiandy winning the first two matches and three of the first five sophomore matt ciasulli lost a double-overtime heart breaker to nathan morgan 6-4 in the 133-lb match morgan led almost all of regulation but ciasulli scored a point within the last few seconds to send the match to overtime - and bring the crowd to its feet overtime was a seesaw encounter between two battle weary warriors ciasulli was up 4-3 with less than 10 sec onds left with a few seconds remaining ciasulli was hit with a stalling penalty b&w photo by blake neiman if i could do it again i wouldn't have backed up as much ciasulli said it's a long season and it's not over yet with that overtime contin ued both wrestlers were gasping for air as overtime dragged on eventually morgan was able to hit a take down to seal the match for the cowboys all of ciasulli's energy was spent and the hawks were no 5-ranked sophomore matt ciasulli bottom lost to no 8-ranked sophomore nathan morgan 6-4 in the most important match against oklahoma state university the mountain hawks were defeated 24-9 sunday u.n iraqi ambassador speaks at zoellner byjessi schimmel editor in chief samir sumaidaie the iraqi ambassador to the united nations spoke in zoellner arts center thursday afternoon about the current situation in iraq and prospects for the future his speech was the second in lehigh's united nations ambassadorial speaker series the iraqi situation has its own peculiarity sumaidaie said in a press conference before his speech sovereignty is quite a complex concept i would say that iraq is moving steadily and in a determined way toward sov ereignty we have started a political process and we have kept to the timeline of that political process where one of the stages was to get an elected government in place the next is to write a con stitution and then have further elections sumaidaie's speech had a cen tral theme of understanding per ceptions as reality one of the worst things that happened after the liberation of iraq was to declare that iraq was under occupation this word occupation has so many connotations so much historical baggage that it imme diately became a weapon in the hands of the terrorists sumaidaie is in an interesting position to pass along this per spective he is a sunni muslim broughal debates mountaintop move by keenan pontoni assistant news editor the bethlehem board of education is debating rebuild ing broughal middle school at its current location or building on lehigh's campus which would provide more than twice as much land we've been looking for a site to replace this school said joseph santoro principal of broughal middle school every other piece of land doesn't work so we're down to two options those being our choices we need to figure out which one works the initiative to build a new school has been ongoing for the past five years santoro said the school has become outdated and is too small we need a new building santoro said it's in need of a lot that we can't retrofit and the building does not hold all the students who are currently south side residents building on the current site could pose problems for the new school because the plot is considered too small with less space the new school would likely be taller than if it was to be built on mountaintop campus santoro said taller build ings create more traffic and waste time between class peri ods you need to think of the small things when you're look ing to deliver a program of instruction in our type of envi ronment santoro said the kids need all the time they can get with their teachers if we're wasting valuable min utes every day that we could save over the course of a year it adds up to hours and days of lost instruction santoro said the main roads that currently surround broughal make the surround ing area dangerous for stu dents who walk to school there are safety issues these roads are main corridor roads and the traffic is only going to increase santoro said one of the concerns i have is the interest in gam bling bethlehem is interested and i don't think gambling is a good neighbor for a middle school santoro said moving to mountaintop would provide enough land for fields park ing lots and an adequate school what can we do that would be best for the kids in my mind mountaintop opens more possibilities that are pos see wrestling page 12 i see ambassador page 5 see broughal page 5 women's basketball team beats holy cross see story page 16 sports 12-16 student-athlete profile 16 umoja holds open house to attract new residents see story page 3 news 1-6 senior prom 4 police reports 6 valentine's day attracts spenders see story page 7 business 7-9 new gadgets 7 super bowl 8 freshmen face their first valentine's day away from loved ones bw.lehigh.edu quick fact of all the days of the week the most popular day for people to eat ice cream is sunday source www.amusingfacts.com
