the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 25 tuesday january 25 2005 masked gunman robs junior by john misinco contributing editor a lehigh junior was robbed by two men jan 15 just two days before the start of classes the robbery happened at approximately 10:30 p.m on the northeast corner of west morton and vine streets across from brodhead house and campus square the victim was standing on the corner when the two men one display ing a handgun approached him the suspects took 25 in cash from the victim who was not injured according to police reports the victim identified the sus pects as two black males in their mid-20s the first man was approximately b feet 1 inch tall and wore a grayish bubble jacket and ski mask the other man was described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall and wearing a black bubble jacket with a ski mask and mouth cover the robbery is being investi gated by bethlehem police although little information is available the victim didn't really get a good look at the guys said bethlehem police lt stuart bedics so there really aren't any leads at this point investigator matthew palmer said that because the suspect's faces were covered it is unlike ly that they will be identified by the victim bedics said that the robbery was not related to several recent shootings and home invasions that have taken place on the south side during the past several weeks i feel it's an isolated inci dent bedics said i don't think it's related to any of the recent shootings we've had one of these incidents hap pened early last tuesday when a man was robbed and shot outside the casa blanca club in the 900 block of evans street bedics said the suspect in that case was described as a hispanic man in his early 20s on the night the lehigh stu dent was robbed several simi lar incidents were reported throughout the city a man reported being robbed of 800 by an armed man while he was walking in the 1800 block of schoenersville road at 9 15 p.m according to police reports later at approximately 3 a.m sunday morning another man was reportedly knocked unconscious after two men hit him from behind with a bottle and stole 300 from him the jan 15 robbery is one of several to happen in the snow storm strikes a day too soon b&w photo by blake neiman a shoveler clears the drown hall porch sunday campus was hit by about a foot of snow this weekend causing events to be postponed but leaving enough time to clear walkways for monday classes deputy provost named by olivier lewis new positions created to provide lia posts is to participate in the realization of three goals that el-aasser put forward when he was announced as provost el-aasser said his first goal was to create a conducive envi ronment for the faculty and staff to achieve their career goals at lehigh the second goal is to define lehigh's intel lectual signature and the third is to enhance the learning experience of lehigh's stu dents in each one of these areas there was a need to have someone working with me as a team to enhance the corn assistant news editor dr jean r soderlund pro fessor of history was appointed by the provost mohamed el aasser as deputy provost for fac ulty affairs on dec 22 this position is one of the two new posts the provost recendy created after his debut on nov 1 el-aasser said the complementary position of deputy provost for academic programs is to be filled by the end of march and will start work next fall the purpose of these two isons for campus munication with the universi ty community el-aasser said soderlund started in her new role on jan 3 she is to serve as a liaison between the provost and faculty commit tees she will implement cur rent initiatives and express the opinion of the faculty to lehigh's administration current committees are working on tenure promotion guidelines professor mentor ing and shared governance system the last would ame fraternity to launch tsunami relief fund by keenan pontoni assistant news editor lehigh's alpha phi omega service fraternity is preparing to launch crisis crusade,'1 a semester-long fund raising cam paign to aid victims of the dec 2o earthquake and tsunami that hit southeast asia the campaign will soon begin with donation tables in university buildings and a raf fle followed later by a benefit show that will display artistic routines from people represent ing various ethnic groups affected by the tsunami the campaign will be capped off with a bethlehem wide charity run the project is intended to raise money for the internation al tsunami relief efforts of the red cross unicef and other charity groups as well as educate lehigh students about the catastrophe the primary goal is obviously to raise money said apo vice president ashwath muralidharan 07 tire second thing is to raise awareness about the scale of the devastation who's been affected how they've been affected and
