the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 112 no 21 tuesday november 16 2004 library cafe fund-raising begins by michael levine news writer initial steps are now being taken to plan the linderman library cafe as fund-raising efforts by the senior class gain steam class officers said this week the cafe was announced as the senior class gift in september to date 17.3 percent of the senior class has pledged their gift said christopher morgan publicity chair for the gift committee with the project going on for just over two months this is a very promising figure morgan said officers hope to achieve 100 percent class participation and set a goal of securing 150,000 in pledges by the end of this academic year this year is only the first step of a five-year plan the pledge schedule laid out for seniors starts with a 5 dona tion to the gift fund this year increasing to 20 next year 50 in 2007 50 in 2008 75 in 2009 and 100 in 2010 students can pledge online and charge their initial 5 dona tion directly to their bursar account if students complete their pledge before the live-year reunion in 2010 a plaque will list their names seniors are being offered other incentives to contribute including free ice cream at the cup on dec 9 class gift t-shirts and a tea time event early next semester morgan said we also started a raffle where everyone who pledges each month can win a restau rant gift certificate courtesy the development office he said in addition the class of 2005 web site offers free pizza to any group organization association or living area that reaches 100 percent senior participation by thanksgiving break but raising money is only half the battle extensive plan ning still has to be completed and students will have a say in the direction the project takes during the past week the committee met with bruce taggart vice provost for library and technology services jean farrington sen ior development officer and the mga partners the archi tects of the whole linderman project to express its thoughts on the project and relay feed back it is receiving from stu dents morgan said concerns that the cafe would be a distraction to stu dents who go to the library for quiet study time are being diwali lights up the night b&w photo by lain a erde students perform one of several dance segments in lehigh's celebration of diwali the five-day festi val of lights that celebrates life thursday night at zoellner arts center satirical criticizes by keenan pontoni poet society whimsy joins list of drown writers series visitors news writer college in new jersey dressed in complete victorian garb whimsy received applause for his poems and essays he opened with a poem about wearing briefs instead of boxers and later addressed the societal problem with wearing sports wear the evidence is on the street the individuals i dare not call them people who by means of their clothing assume graceless fungal sil houettes as they shuffle lisdess ly about our streets whimsy said every stitch of clothing owned by such creatures seems to be emblazoned with the name of some sports equip ment manufacturer's concern as if in an attempt to steep themselves as much as human ly possible in mercantile vul garity whimsy also had some words of wisdom for aspiring writers in the audience anyone who plans on doing what i've done to get where i am should probably be institutionalized said whimsy it's something i sort writer lord whimsy drew an audience of approximately 70 people to the drown writers series friday night for an open reading session of original writ ing at the wildflower cafe the event started at 9 p.m and lasted more than four hours whimsy who publishes a monthly commentary in the philadelphia independent which humorously criticizes modern society chose a career in writing recenuy after gradu ating from richard stockton good scholars raise funds for cancer by dave webster news writer the good scholar election which seeks to raise money for cancer research and treat ment started last week and will continue through this friday the fund-raising event run by sigma phi epsilon fraterni ty is now in its 15th year student organizations nominate a member with a minimum 3.25 gpa and seek donations for their candidates in hopes that they will win the campus-wide event has raised more than 400,000 in unrestricted yield during the past 15 years said sigma phi epsilon brother and good scholar committee member evan gyllenhaal 07 the total amount raised is 497,085 every bit of that money goes directly to cancer research or treatment gyllenhaal said the election fund-raising depends on both student and organization involvement while we are overseeing this year's event it is in truth really dependent on die participants forming their own campaign gyllenhaal said the good scholars are essentially campaign managers -
