the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 20 friday november 12 2004 all the lehigh news first celebration of diversity unites nations cultures by usmaan sleemi and liz conroy news writers flags food movies and music provided entertainment and education during lehigh's annual international week sponsored by the global union the week began monday with the parade of nations and territories where students rep resented their countries by car rying flags around campus throughout the week events such as an international building competition an inter national iron chef competition and a multilingual poetry read ing encouraged students to learn more about different cul tures in the first international building competition held last year students constructed models of the bank of hong kong and seatue's space needle after a highly competitive contest this year matt lenza 06 brad bartkowski 06 ryan rostocki 06 and dan leon 06 were victorious with b&w photo by bj shepard their recreation of london bridge the event sponsored by the art and architecture depart ment and the p.c rossin college of engineering helped recruit a diverse group of stu dents to form teams and create an internationally recognizable structure in only 90 minutes the teams were allowed to use only supplied materials a picture of their proposed struc ture was the only outside resource they could use students and professors march around campus monday carrying their countries flags as part of the parade of nations and territories that began international week the parade was sponsored by the dean of students office weighty contribution pays off by darby reed news writer the south bethlehem neighborhood center received 2,642 food items on behalf of alpha chi rho fra ternity's involvement in the particle for the people food drive the fraternity's involve ment in the food drive started after andy rosenbloom 05 then-vice president of alpha chi rho attended a particle concert at lamberton hall and signed up for the band's mailing list several e-mails later he learned about the particle for the people food drive the band promised to per form a free concert for the school that collected the most food to collect the most food crow took it from a different perspective said rich stein 07 philanthropy chair the thing that made our food drive unique was that we were very focused on mone tary not food donations stein said while one individual might donate five packs of top ramen five people might donate 1 and 1 can buy five packs of top ramen people might think that we couldn't win because we're a small school stein said but stein said he believes that from a monetary stand point lehigh has a good chance of winning more than 48 other schools participated in the event including the university of miami american university and university of california berkeley beginning this fall crow sponsored several different fund-raisers the fraternity raised 1,300 through a credit projections expect tuition to increase by carey yorio assistant lifestyle editor caitlin maloy 06 surveyed her freshman dorm room in mcclintic-marshall house everything seemed to be in place her shoes fit nicely on the shoe rack her sweaters were folded and stacked in the over head cabinets even her botded water was tucked away but something didn't feel right - although there was a lot of stor age space maloy said she felt like tfrere was no place to live it felt like i was living in box she said as the semester continued the living situation got worse freshmen in m&m complained about an insect infestation because of broken window screens their counterparts in dravo house complained about moldy shower curtains and tooth paste-encrusted sinks while lehigh students annu ally pay 37,570 to attend the university not including books or personal expenses they expect to get the highest standard of living and education are they getting what they pay for here is the monetary break down of a lehigh education a full meal plan is 3,530 typical first year housing costs total 4,700 the technology fee is 200 and the total cost of tuition 29,140 the cost of tuition at lehigh is higher than four of the seven ivy league schools including harvard yale and cornell uni versities and dartmouth college and it continues to rise during a five-year span tuition has gone up 5,990 this year it increased by 7 percent or 1,910 margaret plympton vice pres ident of finance and administra tion said there are many factors that account for the rise in tuition including the national economy the simple answer is that the tuition goes up because the costs of providing the education are increasing plympton said jon bruno 06 wasn't satis fied i would like to see exacdy where the chunk of our tuition goes he said it can't all go to funding our classes and it doesn't according to see week page 3 see contribution page 3 see tuition page 5 f__k % * k jpbbp,^p : i w 1 !
