the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 19 tuesday november 9 2004 all the lehigh news first campus housing comes up short by patrick fulton senior news writer approximately 40 more upperclassmen have submitted deposits for on-campus housing than there are available spots for next year the excess number of appli cants is not a cause for concern said ozzie breiner associate director of residential services the number of paying applicants is higher than anticipated but breiner said he thinks there will be enough housing next fall if a few people don't have rooms they are put on a wait ing list breiner said will we eventually have housing for them yes we will there is enough non-greek non-special interest housing on campus to accommodate 493 upperclassmen breiner said approximately 530 upperclass men submitted deposits in the on campus housing lottery in last spring's lottery 427 rising juniors and seniors selected rooms rising interest in on-campus housing is due to increased odds of living in housing such as campus square trembley park and sayre park village breiner said upperclassmen are being given priority when selecting spaces in popular dor mitories this year we are saying to juniors and seniors that their chances of get ting these options are much bet ter breiner said there is more interest now and that is exactly what the point was the number of students who submitted payment is not as high as the number who initial ly considered on-campus hous ing said john smeaton vice provost for student affairs there was a large number of people who expressed interest and then there is the number of people who submitted deposits smeaton said the latter is clos er to the number we anticipated some students drop out of the lottery even after submitting deposits breiner said once campus square is full we anticipate people drop ping out he said i don't anticipate a big waiting list the squatters rights lottery took place thursday and open room selection will take place wednesday campus square trembley park and sayre park will house mosdy juniors and seniors breiner said while brodhead house and taylor college are likely to house mostly sopho mores drinker house and warren square will also be open to all non-first-year students lehigh is required to admit a certain percentage of sophomores to campus square they will appear nov 12-14 at 8 p.m in zoellner arts center the play is being directed by pam pepper new es major introduced by katie santoro environmental studies program targets all students news writer mathematics the program focuses mainly on the social sci ence aspect of environmental issues designed to prepare stu dents for careers in fields such as government law journalism non-profit organizations and others a student will get a well rounded view of environmental issues from a number of differ ent perspectives said sharon friedman professor of journal ism and director of the pro gram friedman said that although the university already offers undergraduate degrees in the environmental sciences and engineering the social science component needed to be strengthened in order to give students a com plete experience in environ mental studies according to the program's web site the new major will correspond with the bachelor's programs in earth and environ mental sciences and environ mental engineering students who took the intro ductory course environment and consumer society the environmental studies major which hopes to draw students from a variety of dis ciplines and offer a new per spective on environment and society was introduced at an open house in neville hall last week the program which stu dents will be able to enter this semester spans the university's four colleges and consists of courses in 10 departments including science engineering education humanities and fraternity cleanliness called into question by jayne carapezzi assistant news online editor the hunter green walls of the kappa sigma fraternity dining room became a blank canvas for a few drunken brothers on a saturday night in september armed with ketchup and mus tard they emulated jackson pollock's abstract action paint ing coloring the walls with flecks of red and splashes of yel low the brothers didn't stop there they splattered yogurt on the tables and overturned them flinging the creamy substance onto die walls where it mixed with the condiments into a slimy goo they poured milk on the speckled floor tiles so that it absorbed the unswept crumbs from the day and made a soggy dorito soup on the floor they squirted the remaining ketchup into the fire detectors rendering them useless the brothers antics not over they hauled in barrels of hay left over from a country-themed party they scattered the straw around the dining room and kitchen floors creating a cozy nest for the mice that live in their pantry police entered kappa sig early that saturday morning
