the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 18 friday november 5 2004 all the lehigh news first bush win brings relief dismay by mike levine and liz danzig news writers an election season that's seen more political activism on campus than any others in recent memory finally came to an end wednesday morning bringing relief and affirmation for republicans and bitter dis appointment for democrats students gathered together at local bars and off-campus houses or dorms to watch the results come in patrons young and old filled neighborhood pubjp macgrady's while it appeared that the majority were kerry supporters occasional vocal encouragements could be heard for president george w bush due mostly to the fact that there were no major surprises early on the crowd remained relatively uninvolved choosing instead to focus more on their beverages and fellow bar-goers than the news reports on the numerous televisions we got some blueberry beer,"jeanine hoff 05 said not mentioning her political preference until pressed i voted for kerry for three rea sons health care abortion and education college democrats and college republicans both pre pared for election night with off-campus parties ready to cel ebrate eminent victory despite a mix of network coverage and the daily show on the television hard alcohol on the kitchen table and the fact that the race still appeared to be too close to call for much of the evening the mood at the college democrats party was surpris ingly subdued even before a kerry victory seemed unlikely at the college republicans gathering students flipped through cnn fox news and msnbc to watch the different reports and see the tallies come in they sensed how close the race was going to be and the potential problems that could arise with the swing states florida pennsylvania and ohio throughout the victory party the students would cheer anytime bush's image appeared on the screen when he won a state when the electoral college results were updated the students yelled we are going to win and here come four more years despite the anticipation to see who would prevail tuesday night it was not until 11:02 a.m the next day when sen john kerry called president bush to concede the election did one of the nation's closest competitions finally end obviously reactions varied among the two groups i'm disappointed and frus trated james crosson 06 president of the college democrats said wednesday i can't believe that 50 million people thought that bush is more fit to run the country than kerry especially after having four years of everything possible going wrong even the fact that kerry car ried pennsylvania didn't make crosson feel any better i suppose i should say b&w photo by nishika vidanage lehigh and the bethlehem area school district have discussed a partner ship to create a science and technology model magnet middle school broughal seeks magnet status by nora mattern news writer lehigh is in discussion with the bethlehem area school district to turn broughal middle school into a science and technology model magnet middle joseph lewis superintend ent of the bethlehem area school district said discussion concerning broughal middle school's future is in the early stages there are very tentative plans at the moment he said right now the focus is on a possible partnership with lehigh to build a science and technology school on that site this would be part of the bethlehem area school district connected by virtue to lehigh perhaps by their teacher candi dates scientists and engi neers george white professor and program coordinator of educational leadership at lehigh and a middle school specialist has been involved in two planning meetings with the school district concerning the campus to undergo restoration by carter hempleman review committee plans to implement measures to change campus university drive from packer avenue to the flagpole on the uc front lawn will soon be closed to vehicles the project will create a safer campus where pedestrians won't have to compete with cars said tony corallo chair man of the committee and asso ciate vice president for facilities planning in addition a wide walkway will replace portions of memorial drive to increase the green space in the area and make the center of campus resemble a park a press release news writer said the redesigning of the uc lawn which president gregory farrington referred to in a press release as one of lehigh's treasured spaces will be con tracted to lager raabe skafte a philadelphia-based landscape architecture firm construction will begin after classes end in may and is scheduled to be finished before the start of the next school year the project's main goals are to promote more informal meeting and gathering spaces and a stronger connection to the uc lawn without the noise and intrusion of traffic the vision will make the heart of the packer campus friendlier to pedestrians while preserving and enhancing the historic character of the area bordering the major green space that is the uc lawn corallo said traffic will be rerouted by connecting brodhead avenue and university avenue which will create a road that loops around the middle of packer the campus restoration and enhancement plan review com mittee discussed a vision that will change the landscape of the asa packer campus at its first meeting monday changes to the university center lawn and the front of the alumni memorial building are part of the project which began with the construction of
