bach choir since its organization in 1900 the choir met in the chapel of moravian seminary the early part of this week and approved several recommendations of the executive committee concerning the it and as it has been sung in pack er memorial chapel since 1912 developed chorus dr dever spoke of the success that mr carey has had in the de velopment of the mendelssohn chorus he also said that freshman oratorical contest on march 15 six freshmen won the right to compete in the finals of the fresh man oratorical contest to be held march 15 the tryouts were held wednesday evening in packard registrar is president of u of cincinnati dr raymond walters president of the university of cincinnati a lehigh graduate and former regis trar received on feb 23 the first honorary degree ever given at the annual mid - year convocation of washington college chestertown md he received an honorary de gree of letters dr walters was graduated from lehigh in 1907 with the degree of bachelor of arts he was instructor of english here from 1907 to 1911 in 1912 he became assistant profes sor of english and also registrar after serving in this dual capacity until 1921 dr walters left lehigh to become dean of swarthmore col lege he was appointed president of the university of cincinnati in 1932 he has contributed about 185 articles on educational and literary sub jects to various magazines as well as being the author of two volumes on the bethlehem bach choir and a book on foreign education student ideas on marriage to be polled questionnaire on nuptial and pre-marital rela tions will be circulated at lehigh and moravian previous surveys show women have liberal views a questionnaire dealing with dif ferent views of marriage and pre marital relations will be given to 50 lehigh and 50 moravian college for women students within the next week the survey will be conducted by the brown and white and the mir ror moravian's newspaper the students will be chosen from a representative group which will include athletes students promin ent in activities and those not in terested in activities through such a selection an average group will be secured a similar survey at cedar crest and muhlenberg found that the wo men had a more liberal view than the men on all but two things namely the number of children they would have and the length of time they believed should elapse between h hazlehurst assistant professor of chemistry has collab orated with dr j s long and prof h v anderson of the chem istry department in the revision of the text qualitative analysis the enlarged edition will be published the latter part of this week choir to sing bach's mass as memorial bruce carey will direct service to be held in memory of dr wolle originator of festival initial rehearsal of chorus held last night at moravian packer memorial chapel will once more resound to the music of bach's mass in b minor this time as a memorial service to be held saturday may 13 for the late dr j fred wolle who directed the bach choir since its organization in 1900 the choir met in the chapel of moravian seminary the early part of this week and approved several recommendations of the executive committee concerning the memorial service and engagement of a direc tor the first rehearsal was held last night in the moravian chapel under the direction of bruce carey head of the music department at girard college who will conduct the mem orial service dr richards chosen dr charles russ richards was appointed head of a committee to select a lasting memorial for dr wolle with the 1,000 appropriated by the executive committee of the choir mr carey was recommended to lead the bach choir by arthur jud son manager of the philadelphia orchestra according to h s sny der who presided at the meeting mr carey has been conductor of a mendelssohn chorus no drastic changes will be made by mr carey in the interpretation of the mass dr francis j dever secretary of the choir said that it would be sung as dr wolle taught it and as it has been sung in pack er memorial chapel since 1912 developed chorus dr dever spoke of the success that mr carey has had in the de velopment of the mendelssohn chorus he also said that names of several choir conductors have been submitted to the executive commit tee for future consideration dr a s cooley a member of the choir for 18 years said that he was definitely in favor of holding a memorial service under the direc tion of mr carey as a test to see if further bach festivals might be successful it was the hope of dr wolle that the choir would continue for ever this was made known as how ard j wiegner a charter member recalled a paper which he had read to a lions club meeting last fall at which dr wolle was present one choir member
