decided hit with audience before an extremely appreciative and gratified audience the faculty dramatic club presented their first play of the season : bernard shaw's candida on saturday evening in drown hall the presentation was extraordinary in its splendid inter pretation and the members of the cast are to be heartily congratulated on their achievement of quality so near to perfection the whole com pany seemed entirely at one with each other and all of the actors entered so deeply into their indi vidual character portrayals as to make the finished product worthy of professional players drown hall was well filled with interested auditors and the interest of each one was kept at highest pitch all through the evening's per formance conttnued on page two the work of mrs john l stew art in the role of candida was worthy of the greatest praise she interpreted the character of the heroine with fine sympathy and un derstanding her emotional parts being especially masterful another demonstration of twf usual skill was the performance of professor parke b fraim as electrical engineers hold meeting the metallurgical society visited the coke works near hellertown on thursday afternoon and inspect ed the entire plant about forty members of the society made the trip as well as a number of stu dents of other courses the party first visited the part of the plant where the coal is stored in large bins from where it is car ried by large belt-conveyors to the top of a mill which converts the coal as it passes downward through separators into a uniform size suit able to be fed into the coke ovens then the coke ovens were inspect ed which consist of a long row of separate ovens called a battery between each two ovens the heat ing takes place and the gas formed by the coking of the coal supplies the fuel for the operation each oven requires 24 hours to complete ly convert its charge of coal into coke and every 15 minutes an ov en is dumped and recharged it requires 24 hours to dump all the ovens in one battery thus com pleting an entire cycle the coke frorrf the ovens is dumped into a large steel car which transports the red-hot coke at once to a quenching bath and from which it is again dumped into a large storing bin ready for use continued on page four lehigh press club issues first news in order to arouse the active sup port of every male undergraduate in the united states and canada to liberal arts courses and to refute the popular claim that a four-year cultural course is time mis-spent pi delta epsilon honorary collegiate journalism fraternity has announ ced as the subject for its 1921-1922 intercollegiate editorial contest the practical value of a cultural education thousands of editorials on this subject are expected for the con test will this year be open to every male undergraduate in every col lege and university of the united states and canada because great interest in this subject has been manifested of late and because of the fact that pi delta epsilon will award its coveted gold silver and bronze medals to the prize-winners as well as its certificates of merit to first-prize winners in each col lege and university represented an exceptionally large number of en tries is expected president warren g harding a member of pi delta epsilon and former editor and present owner of the marion ohio star will represent the fraternity in the pres entation of awards three promi nent metropolitan newspaper edi tors will act as final judges nation-wide publicity will be giv en the 1921-1922 contest through the associated press and other news-gathering media and the prize-winning editorials will be re leased in mimeographed form sim ultaneously to every college uni versity and daily metropolitan news paper in this coach of the princeton crew was the speaker at the weekly meeting of the y m c a held on sunday at 6.15 in drown hall the meeting was very well attended both by students and members of the faculty s cotrell 22 of the y m c a cabinet presided at the meeting and introduced dr spaeth to the audience tall erect keen of eye and firm of speech one could not help but be impressed by the physique and personality of dr spaeth al though as he expressed it during his address he was on the shady side of fifty he still typified all that is strong all that is upright and all that is manly in american manhood being coach of the princeton crew and an exponent of rowing conceded by many to be the most strenuous of college ath letics he undoubtedly obtained his great physique in rowing on the varsity crew when an under graduate physique however is one of dr spaeth's least attainments for he is primarily a scholar and is at pres ent professor of englisn literature at princeton a man of keen vision and wonderful foresight he gave those present mere tid-bits as it were drawn from his large and va ried experiences with men and the things of the world as a basis for his remarks dr spaeth chose the last chapter of deuteronomy and the first chapter of joshua from these he drew a mental picture of moses after many years of hardships and trials in leading his people finally in old age reaching the top of pisgah on the mountain of nebo whence he could see the promised land the goal of his life's endeavors moses continued on page three naval society has interesting meeting basketball squad being groomed for debut lehigh and swarthmore battled through two periods on upper tay lor field last saturday in what was declared to be the fastest soccer match ever witnessed on a lehigh field both elevens registered a goal in the initial period and neither side found it possible to break the 1 to 1 deadlock the visitors were predicted to have the stronger ag gregation but the lehigh team re trieved their defeat of last satur day at the hands of the perm ju nior varsity by their whirl-wind play that gave them the edge on their opponents a crisp stiff wind kept the players on their mettle and the game was maintained at top speed throughout both periods with the strong winds at their backs the local collegians started off the first half with a rush and soon had the ball in the garnet and white territory the lehigh for wards bothered test for several minutes making several unsuccess ful tries for a counter pratt and hampson broke away with the bal and dribbled the entire length o the field on a pass from pratt hampson made a beautiful shot past captain brewer for the first tally of the game swarthmore was unable to keep possession of the ball for any length of time and aided by the strong wind lehigh maintained the offensive in the middle of the period baxter was detected hand ling the ball and lehigh was award ed a free kick fernandez took the try from the 35-yard line and won the admiration of the specta tors by a spectacular shot that tied the score gonzalez was substitu ted for walters and lehigh made an on-rush for another tally but swarthmore strengthened and for the remainder of the period both teams fought fiercely to break the tie the visitors lost their only op portunities to score when they fail ed to register the three corner-kicks awarded them continued on page four swarthmore was outclassed in the second period and except for a few rallies throughout the half had little opportunity to score the brown and white eleven streng thened by the rest between periods played remarkable soccer and de spite the handicap of the stiff wind they caused the visitors no little worry an individual run by fer a regular meeting of the elec trical engineering society will be held in the physics building this thursday at 7.30 p m the le high branch of the american ins titute of electrical engineers will meet at the same time with the electrical society mr w w perry who for some years has been superintendent of operations for the penna utilities co will be the chief speaker of the evening mr perry will speak on some factors determining electrical power rates which is a subject of interest to all engi neers a short discussion along these lines will follow the talk and mr perry will answer any ques tions the men may care to ask the student speaker for the ev ening will be j w horine 22 who will speak on street railway maintenance mr horine has had considerable experience in this field and he will discuss the troubles en countered every day in street rail way operation and their corrections refreshments and an entertain ing musical program will conclude the meeting an invitation to meet with the society is extended to any men of other courses who may be interested in the subjects to be dis cussed inkwell notice lehigh-maryland club the lehigh press club held a meeting last friday evening in the brown and white room in drown hall for the purpose of getting the club into shape to send out the first news-letters on wednesday on account of the bad weather there was a very poor attendance but the club was able to carry on the neces sary business the meeting was called to order by president j w gardy 23 who then outlined the plan of the club each week the important events of the college will be noted by the officers of the club and then a list of them will be made out by the president in order to dispense with regular meetings the list of these events and the men to cover them will be posted on the door of the brown and white room in drown hall at monday noon some time on monday the members of the club will get the assignments and write up the articles these articles will be placed under the door of the brown and white room some time before wednesday noon the brown and white room then will be open to the members from wed nesday noon until 10 o'clock wed nesday night at which time the members will secure material for the letters to be sent to the papers each man in the club has at least continued on page four notice the athletic committee met on last thursday afternoon at which time there was a two-hour discus sion of the coaching system here at lehigh including not only the present but also the future system to be followed out along these lines it was the unanimous opinion of the committee that a continual coaching system was necessary at lehigh to assure the greatest suc cess in not only football but in all other sports by a continual sys tem is meant the securing of a coach who would be available the entire year and who by residing at the university could therefore choose and study his material ev en out of the respective seasons of the different sports and who could possibly coach baseball as well as football inasmuch as coach glick did not ask to return to lehigh the com mittee deemed it advisable not to request his services for the coming year in accordance with the plan outlined for the continual coaching this action was taken not due to any personal dissatisfaction with coach glick and the committee commended him upon the success of the past football season under the existing circumstances due to his business connections coach glick had to be eliminated from any conideration in order to har monize with the new plans were he available as an all-year coach glick would without doubt have been asked to return the proposition of obtaining such a man is very difficult but the ath letic committee has several excel lent candidates in view and hopes to be able to secure the man that lehigh needs to settle the coach ing question much recent discussion has fol lowed the committee's action as to the question of fairness in not giv ing coach click another chance in accordance with the approved plan and realizing that a change would be necessary anyway in the very near future the committee looked upon the action taken as an un avoidable existing condition had glick been asked to return and he should have had a more successful season than the one just past then it would have been even more diffi cult to change to the continual sys tem of coaching than at the present time the committee felt that ev en though the new system may re quire time and sacrifice for its de velopment it would insure to a greater extent the future success of athletics at lehigh basketball practice has been go jng on steadily for the past few days and coach murphy is getting a team lined up for the opening game this saturday several com binations have been used in prac tice and the following men have received the call in recent scrim mages lingle lees and snyder forwards ; gallager outer ; and hartung henschen and stewart guards of these henschen and snyder are new to the squad and show considerable promise rote has so far failed to report for practice this season while don ovan a consistent performer in pre vious years will not be available as he has completed his four years of collegiate basketball donovan did most of the foul-goal shooting last year so it will be necessary to develop a man to fill his place in this department this season notice mustard and cheese mr m c huhbard's talk on welfare work for employers was the feature of the naval en gineering society's meeting on fri day evening mr hubbard who is the superintendent of the service department of the bethlehem steel company elaborated in detail on the work done along these lines by the packard and ford motor companies and outlined somewhat briefly the policy of the steel works in this direction at the conclusion of his remarks mr hubbard was thanked warmly by a s thaeler 22 the president of the society for his interest in com ing to address the meeting refreshments in the form of ice cream and pretzels were served af ter the adjournment of the regular meeting e m enslin 22 gave an inter esting talk at the beginning of the meeting about his experiences on shipboard this summer his cruise extended to port arthur texas and back and while on board he served in the capacity of chief pumpman as the cargo carried in most cases was crude oil his ex periences were both arduous and humorous and his talk was keenly enjoyed by everyone present the next inkwell meeting will be held thursday december bth at 7.45 p m at st paul's parish house the club will go to st mark's church fourth street near vine at about 8.30 to be entertain ed at a nutty party this is the third of a series of eight social meetings on the inkwell program this year and promises to be thor oughly enjoyable anyone inter ested in the organization is welcome to attend there will be a meeting of the mustard and cheese to-morrow at 7.30 p m in drown hall all members are requested to be pres ent and definite plans will be made for the first production to be given by the club early in the new year the annual banquet of the le high-maryland club will be held at the kurtz restaurant on friday
