the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 112 no 10 friday october 1 2004 all the lehigh news first women avoid potential robbery by alyssa levy two sophomore women escaped a potential robbery last saturday night on the comer of brodhead avenue and west morton street the students reported that the incident occurred around mid night while they were walking home he grabbed my purse and i screamed said one of the women as the man attempted to pull the purse from her arm the vic tim's friend screamed as well startled by the reaction of the two women the man ran off away from the lehigh campus news writer news writer after returning to their room the women called the police by the time we came back downstairs the police had already showed up the victim said after riding around in a squad car in an attempt to find the per petrator no arrests were made and the students were taken home the robber was described as a hispanic man approximately 20 years old and around 6 feet tall off-campus burglaries occur about every other day said lt stuart bedics of the bethlehem police while bedics said he believes it is safe for students to live off campus break-ins continue to occur regularly each year at about the same rate bedics said that students should lock their windows and their cars as these are the causes of nearly all cases of unsolved burglaries although stolen items are usu ally not found on sept 28 a man presumed to be responsible for several recent robberies in the area surrounding lehigh was taken into custody the suspect was found with many possessions that have been reported stolen from houses in the area but the objects have yet to be returned to their owners this is not normally the out come however and stolen goods are often recovered at local pawn shops to increase the chances that their property is recovered vic tims of burglary are encouraged to contact the police immediately students are advised not to venture off campus alone at night and remember to lock their doors and windows when leaving the house considering the recent rob beries diat have taken place so far this year some students feel it is the university's job to protect off campus students the university should imple ment a higher security system off campus said jenna friedman 07 the danger involved in leaving lehigh grounds discour other students participated in mountain climbing cliff diving hiking and canoeing debate encourages activism by keenan pontoni faculty students promote election awareness students and professors dis cussed the importance of the upcoming national presiden tial election at a political infor mation forum held in packard laboratory monday political science professors brian pinaire and ted morgan as well as representa tives from three campus politi cal groups addressed an audi ence of more than 50 students this is the most important election of your lifetime thus far pinaire said this elec tion has stark choices to be made the candidates have very different visions of the future professor morgan followed by pushing political discourse on campus my aim is to have some discussion and to engage each other in the flow of ideas morgan said i think one of the important things we really need to learn how to do is converse with each other so we understand each other this is an academic communi ty we need to have some mutual understanding james crosson 06 presi dent of the college democrats neal hoffman 05 a member of the college republicans and jim goodley 05 from the progressive student alliance concluded with a debate in which they represented the three major presidential candi dates john kerry george w bush and ralph nader respectively students asked questions on issues and commented on their own views following the students escort center visitors by nora mattern news writer an increase in anti-abortion protests at the allentown women's center has prompted a group of lehigh students to escort visitors into the building the number of protests has increased since a federal judge ruled in august that protesters could gather on keats street a small alley that runs behind the center although die building is technically located on union boulevard visitors must enter the center from keats street the judge's ruling struck down restrictions placed on the protesters by the city of allentown these restrictions lim ited the hours of protest to mondays through saturdays from 8 a.m to 5 p.m and pre vented protesters from gathering on keats street according to the morning call jennifer boulanger 93 and 97 executive director of the allentown women's center said the center moved its office to the union boulevard location with the understanding that anti-abor tion protesters would not be allowed to demonstrate boulanger said that protesters began to picket and harass the patients and staff creating what she described as an atmosphere of fear preventing safe
