the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 47 all the lehigh news first friday april 30 2004 durand applies to arizona state by patrick fulton news editor dean of the college of business and economics richard durand is one of four finalists to be vice president and provost of arizona state university east the four were chosen out of an initial 50 applicants if select ed durand would assume his new role at asu on july 1 the current provost of asu east had planned to retire this past fall semester but extended his stay to june 30 i'm thrilled with my college my faculty alumni the relation ships we've built with corpora tions durand said but when i got the call i took the job inter view in part because it is so much broader than what i have now asu hired an executive search firm to seek out qualified candidates durand said he ini tially learned of the position through a newspaper advertise ment he applied and was con tacted by the asu administra tion several months ago durand said he was inter viewed for the position at phoenix sky harbor international airport but the interview lasted no more than two hours the most important interviews will take place today he said the four candidates have been visiting the asu campus since april 20 to take part in public forums there are three separate forums one is open to a select campus leadership group another is open to faculty and staff and the third is open to stu dents the forums allow faculty and students to determine back ground information and candi dates reasons for applying durand is the last of the candi dates to attend the forums speak ing at asu's east campus today he will speak at tempe campus on monday the forums are standard pro cedure durand said and will help the campus to get to know him better it's basically them probing me determining my values and aspirations and how i might fit with what they're looking for durand said none of the forums will have a predetermined set of questions said jeff holeman assistant direc tor of communications at asu east you can ask about class avail ability holeman said you can ask about the campus library you can ask anything you want to ask it's an open forum so it's whatever is on people's minds erika camardella the asu east reporter for the state press who is attending the forums said questions cover a leopards 7-3 and 6-4 in a doubleheader to earn the final league playoff spot registration faults addressed council to meet this summer to solve system problems by andrea tulcin for freshmen sophomores and students with special aca demic classifications members will also discuss ways to improve student adviser contact and to allow students more flexibility in their scheduling technical difficulties with in the system are going to be looked at registrar bruce correll said the process will run more smoothly and maybe everyone can be happy stress and anxiety about schedules is often overwhelm ing for students attempting to register worries about setting up adviser meetings pin numbers and required classes closing have plagued the uni versity's registration process in the past and sparked stu dent animosity toward sched uling the previous registration process known as the student record system was used at the university from 1979 to 1999 older computer tech nology and software caused problems for many students students were unable to pick news writer the registrar's office will be working this summer to improve the registration sys tem the university has used since 2000 the office will put together a council to discuss possible solutions to registration prob lems students and deans will serve on the council the seniority order of reg istration will be discussed among council members the council will attempt to find a way to reserve more classes class unites to protest exam by leigh gilsenan news writer when his students refused to take his midterm exam last friday professor ted morgan was not completely surprised this had happened before in this class the students of movements and legacies of the 19605 a political science class refused to take an exam because they felt it was hypocritical in light of what they had learned all semester it was not so much protest ing that specific exam or that class clare burchi 06 said it was more protesting die whole idea of exams and writing down all that we had learned into a lit de blue book instead of taking the exam the students organized a war protest march and teach-in which took place yesterday protesters named themselves the new resistance and their goal is to make students aware that they are in charge of their education the students of the new resistance feel that the edu cation system puts too much emphasis on grades and getting an education in order to get a high-paying job rather than for the purpose of learning we want students to realize that they are in control of their education and that
