should be elec trically tied together and connected to the ground he stated this ground circuit should in clude all objects that are assumed to be normally dead tanks pipes transformer cases lightning arrest ers railroad tracks and fences should be grounded to prevent high potential differences developing in cases of insulation failure he said advocates small resistance resistance between grounding electrodes and the ground should be low appleman stated this low re sistance may be accomplished by using electrodes of large area sev eral grounding leads should be used for maximum safety he added to reduce ground resistance pipes are often driven into the soil and sometimes scrap iron is plowed into trenches surrounding the grounding electrodes mr appleman contin ued water mains are satisfactory grounders because of their extent and diameter in describing the single phase watt hour or the cash register of the power company lee took one of the machines apart and passed working sub-stations necessary for the safeguarding of personnel and material was discussed by glen appleman grounding engineer of the pennsylvania power and light company at the electrical engin eering society meeting last evening a student lecture the register of the power company was given by robert p lee e e 33 mr appleman described good grounding characteristics all metal objects in stations should be elec trically tied together and connected to the ground he stated this ground circuit should in clude all objects that are assumed to be normally dead tanks pipes transformer cases lightning arrest ers railroad tracks and fences should be grounded to prevent high potential differences developing in cases of insulation failure he said advocates small resistance resistance between grounding electrodes and the ground should be low appleman stated this low re sistance may be accomplished by using electrodes of large area sev eral grounding leads should be used for maximum safety he added to reduce ground resistance pipes are often driven into the soil and sometimes scrap iron is plowed into trenches surrounding the grounding electrodes mr appleman contin ued water mains are satisfactory grounders because of their extent and diameter in describing the single phase watt hour or the cash register of the power company lee took one of the machines apart and passed working parts around for inspec tion he also discussed some errors that might occur in the functioning of the meter but said that they sel dom exceeded two per cent resents complaints professors association
