- the brown and white - lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first 7 vol 11l no 39 tuesday march 30 2004 appointment upsets cas faculty by greg meyer news writer despite the announcement made march 4 that a new dean has been chosen for the college of arts and sciences the nearly 18-month long search may not be over yet numerous cas faculty mem bers have criticized provost ron yoshida for his handling of the process that led to the appoint ment of anne meltzer as the new dean the issue was discussed at a meeting held march 22 according to the unapproved minutes from the meeting written by cas faculty secretary steven krawiec provost ron yoshida addressed the faculty regarding the search process yoshida said the search com mittee recommended two candi dates according to a timeline provided at the meeting by the policy committee the first candi date was offered the position but withdrew her candidacy yoshida told the faculty that he and president gregory farrington met with the second candidate for several hours before concluding that the candidate was not what they sought for the position yoshida farrington and professor jean soderlund chair of the search committee decided that a third search would not be in the best interest of the universi ty instead they decided to offer the position to meltzer meltzer said that when yoshida approached her it wasn't a completely random encounter she said she had been nominated for the position in the fall when the second search began meltzer said that since she did not apply for the position she was never a candidate in the search while there were many things attractive about the job at that time i felt my passion was really in teaching and research meltzer said the professor said she changed her mind after speaking with yoshida under the circumstances i b&w photo by andrew figuozzi thought i could help out she said at the meeting professor jeff sands chair of the personnel committee said he received a request from yoshida to meet with his committee at noon on march 4 about the search for a new dean only two of the four other personnel committee mem bers were able to attend sands said that at this meeting yoshida told them the new dean had been selected and would arrive shortly to meet with them sands said yoshida gave him the impression that the search com mittee had approved the candi blast furnaces on the bethlehem steel site located on the south side remain in the area as a historical landmark while the site has a distinctive past developers toil with determining its future steel giants rusting away historic bethlehem steel buildings face uncertain fate by andrew c olesnycky senior writer in the conference room of the national museum of industrial history in bethlehem steve donches the museum's president and chief executive officer bounds out of his chair in mid sentence to sift through a thick pile of architectural sketches wearing a pinstripe suit with matching salt-and-pepper hair donches radiates die vitality and conviction of a college athlete as he explains the museum's plans for restoring the industrial lots just across third street - lots former ly owned by bethlehem steel this is the only place in the country that you have three cen turies of industry where you can tell the story of what happened on the actual sites donches said you won't find another industrial facility that has retained so many of its original buildings donches wants to use the past to create the future the sketches donches spreads across the table depict ways in which bethlehem steel's dilapidated historic build ings could be adapted for modem uses while preserving their his toric value but despite donches positive attitude -
