the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 11l no 34 tuesday march 2 2004 student input sought for activity offerings by kirk sobell lifestyle writer the billboards outside chandler-ullman hall are deco rated like a wall in a new york city alley neon orange green yellow and red advertisements crowd the old brown board the chocolate brown paint is chipped from the many tacks and staples that have been attached a similar sight can be found on the bulletin boards inside the rauch business center and the ulrich student center and out side the university center space on these boards is often so scant that posters are tacked to the rims many of these bright banners encourage students to attend campus activities they signal events like hip-hop artist j live comedian mitch fatel a showing of the matrix reloaded and the lehigh-lafayette bonfire despite the array of events provided on campus many stu dents complain that there is noth ing to do they say that lehigh is boring and say they cannot find anything that appeals to them daily news digest e-mails are deleted by many without a look at its contents turnout for events at lamberton hall is only 20 stu dents out of an undergraduate population of more than 4,000 does the problem lie with uninterested students or uninter b&wphoto by bj shepard esting events many students and faculty members who plan and manage these events are trying to cure the students dissatisfaction with campus activities what is there to do at lehigh lehigh is not short on provid ing activities for the student body on average one student activ ity occurs per day on campus a typical friday or saturday may have approximately six or seven events throughout the day ginger deßias program coor dinator in the office of student activities plans many campus events she manages the outdoor adventure club and the welding a class offered through miniversity was popular with students this semester miniversity which is well-advertised draws more student interest than many other events offered throughout the year archeology program plans dig in honduras by davina attar news writer the university's archeology program is planning an excava tion of an ancient rural com munity in rancho del rio honduras the program now in its third year runs six weeks from may 17 to june 26 and is organized by archaeology pro fessors aaron shugar and david small the excavation is a valu able learning experience small said students can earn credits in upper level anthropology courses and profit from the experience of living in a third world village and interacting with the villagers small said students lived with villagers on previous trips who also helped with the excavation did their laundry and cooked for them erin gilliland 04 an anthropology major participat ed last summer for four weeks staying in the village of pueblo nuevo gilliland and her group slept on beds made of cin derblocks i guess i would describe it as camping but a step up gilliland said water and electricity were available for approximately 80 percent of the trip small said davis wants u.s prisons abolished by caroline binder news writer imprisonment is civil death political activist angela davis said friday night at zoellner arts center the university of california santa cruz professor lectured at an event co-sponsored by the women's center and humanities center in honor of moratorium week speaking against civil rights violations in the u.s prison system davis said treatment is especially poor for women and minorities a disproportionate percent age of those in our country's jails are people of color some thing like 70 percent davis said we cannot be told these people are more likely to com mit crimes she said that women now the largest group to be impris oned are frequently the victims of sexual assault in the name of cavity and strip-searching by prison guards remove the uniform of the person who is performing the search and watch what is being done davis said we are wit nessing sexual assault davis cited several stories of prison experiences including the story of ronald herrera the prisoner's dialysis appara tus was cut off while guards watched the super bowl when the guards finally dis covered that herrera was dead all of the blood in his body had been drained davis also told of a woman in a california prison who died after medical technicians neglect ed her cellmates calls for assis tance for more than an hour today's society allows us to distance ourselves from pris oners that they are a lesser people who are not entitled to human rights -
