the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday february 24 2004 all the lehigh news first vol 11l no 32 speaker addresses racial issues by steven munoz news writer professor william scott direc tor of afiricana studies gave a speech in honor of w.e.b dußois seminal work the souls of black folk at the umoja house thursday the problem of the color line has abated but the shadow of prejudice and its legacy still looms over this land scott said part of the university's celebra tion of black history month the presentation was an hour-long question-and-answer session on dußois reflections on race scott also used souls as a reference in examining the state of the black community these times in which we live at the dawn of the 21st century constitute the very best of days and in some ways the very worst of days for african-americans since emancipation scott said racism in the united states has greatly diminished since the publication of souls he said these undeniable signs of progress are only part of the black story in contemporary america scott said there's another where progress up from prejudice and poverty has been all but absent scott went on to note both the achievements and the struggles faced by the nation's 37 million black citizens scott argued that many of the problems addressed in souls persist in modern times these problems include urban segregation black poverty and gang violence nearly half of the black pop ulation presently live in commu nities that are 90 percent black scott said thus the black belt dußois wrote of at the dawn of the last century persists but it's presently far more of an urban than rural phenomenon so much so we can speak of an urban plantation scott suggested a move toward principled leadership and cri b&w photo by laina erde students attended a lecture at umoja house thursday william scott director of africana studies spoke about the issue of race in america discussions promote positive self-image by monica hamrick news writer the women's center will give out free cookies on friday but only to those who sign a declaration first saying they won't feel guilty about eating them t fearless friday will mark an end to a week of events to raise awareness of body image issues kristin handler director of the women's center said if nothing else she wants stu dents to think about what image they have of their bod ies and think about where the messages are coming from i don't know any woman who does not have a disor dered relationship to eating handler said handler said many students are damaging their health widi out realizing it we are told that how we look is most important as women handler said and pressure to conform to a beauty ideal is so perva sive that we often forget the pressure is there i hope students realize it's not just an issue we should pass off said nicole martini 06 a member of alpha omicron pi sorority it's a big deal it's hard for girls to admit it when they have an eating disorder said martini who wanted to raise awareness of the issue martini wrote a letter to all sororities and fraternities asking them to get involved this year the idea of body image is being widened to address issues faced by men two male counselors from the counseling center will run a session thursday night for men only called male body image phi kappa theta fra ternity is sponsoring the event every person has their own reason for why they'd want to go and personally it's not that important to me josh goldberg 05 said international women and women of color will have an opportunity to talk to each other at the women's center today at noon in an event called sister circle in fact eating disorders are growing among women of color handler said women of color have to face the impossibility of fitting up plans comedy musical events by lauren kala fa news writer university productions is planning several major events as the semester continues the events planned range from music to comedy and the arts one event will be the up comedy show on april 17 this event will kick off greek week and will feature one of the nation's top comics the event will be held in grace hall and is expected to draw approxi mately 1,200 spectators most students have proba bly never gone to a comedy club or to see a band of a cer tain genre or even seen a hyp notist or magician in person but we bring these diverse acts to campus nearly every other weekend lynch said one of university productions biggest commit ments of the semester is the sundaze music festival held on april 24 sundaze is an all-day music festival featuring several bands and free giveaways the festival is held at the end of greek week and typically tries to have three or four major per formers sundaze was incredible last school year said nina cebenko 06 all of my friends and sorority sisters went out and enjoyed great music and company it was a very fun experience and i would defi nitely recommend it to fresh men especially those who have not yet had the opportunity to attend the winner of the annual battle of the bands competition will open the spring music festi val at sundaze an estimated 2,000 students came for the show last year to participate in battle of the bands one member of the band must be a lehigh student we at university productions work every year to make it a memorable event with a variety of good music food t-shirts and games said director olga stewart this year will be no different many additional events will be planned in the near future we encourage the lehigh populace to come out and come across these upcoming and exciting events said will welch programming manager for up they are unique expe riences offered by the student body for the student body to take part in the university productions web site is undergoing recon struction university productions is working on media to put in its media archive section of the web site the
