the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 27 friday february 6 2004 all the lehigh news first maginnes artwork stirs nationwide controversy by greg meyer news writer the lehigh college republicans have launched a news media campaign to protest the location of a controversial pho tography exhibit'displayed in the dußois gallery of maginnes hall the controversy was picked up by national news outlets earli er this week including the associated press neal hoffman president of the college republicans has made the club's views and goals in the matter very clear all we're mad about is that this exhibit was put up in what is supposed to be a nonpartisan department hoffman said maginnes is home to the departments of political science history and international relations the exhibit tided the forbidden pictures consists of five color photographs by world renowned photojournalist larry fink according to the artist's own statement which accompa nies the exhibit the pictures are meant to be a political satire pre sented in the german weimar style used by such artists as b&w photo by andrew figuozzi grosz dix and beckmann ricardo viera director of the lehigh art galleries said the artist hired actors dancers and look-alikes of president bush and his cabinet members to pose for the photographs one of the pic tures includes a bush look-alike groping a woman's breast hoffman not only said that these pictures are offensive but that they falsely criticize the president he's one of the few presi dents who has actually been faith ful to his wife and he doesn't matthew mezzancello 05 stares at one of the controversial pictures displayed in the dußois gallery at maginnes hall the exhibit titled the forbidden pictures consists of five color photographs by larry fink zoellner welcomes exhibit by ally pereg news writer the zoellner art gallery has opened a new exhibit titled lewis de soto para nirvana self-portrait located in the main gallery p-u-a nirvana will be on display until march 21 de soto's work features a 26-foot long resting buddha the artist has replaced buddha's face with his own por traying both himself and the buddha at the moment of death and supreme consciousness according to the lehigh web site de soto worked while dealing with the death of his father and his exhibit has been featured in museums and galleries through out the world an opening recep tion was held to commemorate the new exhibit's arrival on jan 30 in the zoellner art gallery a lot of my friends have already checked out the new exhibit at zoellner said emily strong 04 i've heard it's really impressive rob lopata collections and exhibitions coordinator for the zoellner arts gallery said that in addition to opening the exhibit the gallery launched its new web site www.luag.org at the same time that we were designing and developing content for the web site we also have begun converting our full permanent collection image and paper files to an electronic data base format he said the conversion will continue for many months but already art history and museum studies students are conducting research on objects from the permanent collection in a way that would have been impossible even last fall this is truly the cutting edge of museum technology and allows the art galleries to take a huge step forward in realizing came from a middle-class family her father was an abusive alcoholic and her mother gathered the courage when rebecca was seven to move her and her brother out she faced more trials growing up including a sexually abusive step father she was a mother at 19 but she moved to the lehigh valley in 1983 and earned her associate's degree and graduated with her bachelor's degree from northampton community college this january she raised her son and owns a consulting business in emmaus that special izes in hiv/aids related topics and life and social skills yet she was in trexlertown because
