the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 26 tuesday february 3 2004 all the lehieh news first global union celebrates move by david webster news writer lehigh's international pro gram held a house-warming last thursday to celebrate its move to the newly renovated coxe hall with their offices previous ly scattered throughout cam pus members of the interna tional program were excited about coxe hall's ability to house all of lehigh's interna tional programs which include the office of international stu dents and scholars the global union the office of english as a second language and the study abroad office a dramatic change has occurred said bill hunter director of international stu dents and scholars and the global union all of a sud den a majority of lehigh's international activities are under one roof the goal of the open house was to enhance student involvement in international programs such as the global union lehigh's second largest student organization i did not want to give a speech for the event i wanted to show that the global union is student organized and stu dent driven said hunter while i stand as a director they are the ones who really make this happen we hope that this house-warming will make people more aware of the international programs so they can find out who's involved the services we pro vide and how people can become active with it the university is anticipat ing increased student involve ment in lehigh's study abroad and international programs given its centralized loca tion i hope the new facility will help the international offices to communicate more efficiently and will help stu dents get a better grasp on their international decision said stacy stainbrook assistant to the provost and the director of international affairs hunter said he thinks the new facility will benefit and unite students of all cultures this new facility provides an opportunity for a tremen dous amount of synergy hunter said among other things we have a new satellite tv which gets over 40 interna tional channels from places like france china india lebanon japan korea and mexico this is a fantastic tool for students who for example want to improve their language skills just the other night we had a group of americans practicing their french by watching french sitcoms sexual assault survivor speaks out by darby reed news writer katie koestner held the atten tion of greek members last thursday night as she recounted her sexual assault and survival koestner was raped by a fel low freshman student at the age of 18 she was attending the college og william and mary in virginia her presentation wasn't what i was expecting shannon sorenson 06 said she didn't give any statistics but instead made the issue real and person able and amazingly with a lot of humor koestner had never had rea son to be wary of men she said her father had been an fbi agent and had terrified previous boyfriends by answering the door in full fatigues after one date with peter she didn't think anything of inviting him back to her room to dance following the assault that occurred there koestner tried to press charges due to a lack of evidence and public support she held a campus hearing instead of taking her case to court peter was found guilty only after saying katie told me to stop no more than a dozen times and then she stopped so i thought she changed her mind for his punishment he was prohibited from the women's dorms for one semester hindsight never ceases to be perfect koestner said i went to college with the intent of being a chemical engineer not this since her assault koestner has spoken at more than 800 col leges universities military institu tions and high schools koestner only intended on speaking for a year after she graduated but said she felt it was selfish to quit date rape was unheard of at the time of koestner's assault she appeared on the cover of time on june 3 1999 she also worked with hbo to create a tel evision movie based on her story this year the nfl sponsored 30 b&w photo by andrew figliozzi katie koestner spoke candidly to greek students last thursday participate in s.t.a.r students that are ready academy a tutoring and mentor ing program for students in fourth through twelfth grade this year approximately 100 students are participating til give their sights higher the goal of the program is to provide students with the oppor tunity to learn things that they wouldn't have the chance to be exposed to in school said henry odi executive director of special projects for the academic out reach office saturdays begin at 8:30 a.m in the university center it keeps you busy and out of trouble chickey said my mom's happy that it keeps me out of trouble it keeps me going really after breakfast students partic ipate in a group meeting before they are divided by grade level and assigned to study skills and communications sessions lunch in johnson dining hall is followed by tutoring sessions on the third floor of the uc some tutors work with two students because the demand for tutors is higher than the supply i think everyone assumes it's going to be a big time commit ment that they're not going to have fun said anne boig 07 a tutor you might think that the students are the only ones who are going to learn but the kids teach you a lot i'm studying to be a high school math teacher so s.t.a.r is a natural program for me — it will prepare me for my future career en-tseh wang 05 said starting this semester lehigh students can earn
