the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 20 all the lehigh news first tuesday november 18 2003 arrests made by campus police by greg meyer news writer five arrests were made last week as part of a joint effort between the university and bethlehem police forces following the arrests another student was robbed at knifepoint early thursday morning there have been 19 report ed car break-ins on campus since the beginning of the semester with a total estimated loss value of more than 10,000 according to police records police chief ed shupp said the city has also had a number of similar incidents shupp said a joint patrol of university and city police offi cers observed two juveniles attempting to break into a car on university property the patrol followed the juveniles until they successfully entered a car off campus where they were arrested the two juveniles were sent to northampton county juvenile detention center in easton shupp said he is not sure if they are still being held there over the past several weeks we've had multiple joint patrols out to deal with the recent rob beries and vehicle thefts shupp said shupp said one 18-year-old male and two juveniles were arrested shortly after 11 p.m last monday evening police had received reports of two robberies that occurred between 10 p.m and 11 p.m one of the robberies happened in the brodhead parking lot and the other was on birkel avenue john young 06 said he thinks the police were lucky to make these arrests my friend was the one who reported seeing the gun young coach taylor sparks change of pace by dave duquette sports columnist change was expected last season when billy taylor took the reins of a struggling lehigh basketball program what was n't expected was the immediate impact that taylor the only african-american head coach in the patriot league would have the hawks more than tripled the previous seasons victory total with 16 the second greatest improvement in division i but the effect that taylor has had cannot just be measured in terms of wins and losses in fact the entire ideology of lehigh basketball has changed since he has taken control circumstances were much different sterrett said sal was a very capable coach that really understood lehigh and at a different time could have been very successful but if you don't win it's not as fun for anyone involved and if the suc cess isn't there sometimes a coach tends to lose credibility with the players senior matt perdoni who is entering his fourth season as team manager agrees it was the right time for a change sal was a good guy but his approach kind of got old after a while perdoni said despite being able to com pete with all of the league teams the squad won just five games the final straw might have been a 82-69 loss to top-seeded american in the 2002 patriot league tournament in which the hawks hung tough through out the first half before falling tom byrnes patriot league assistant executive director for media relations said that some times all a team needs is a change of pace the addition of taylor real ly revitalized the players byrnes said they really start ed playing together and had a great season sometimes all a team really needs is a fresh start some new ideas and sometimes some new people to jump-start a program ♦♦♦ following a careful evalua tion of the program and dis cussions between mentesana and sterrett in 2002 a mutual decision was reached that mentesana's contract would not be renewed the decision ended a six-year run by mentesana resulting in a 43 124 record we felt that the program needed to go in a different direction in order to reach our potential as a program sterrett said despite the overall losing record sterrett said the pro gram was grateful for mentesana's commitment and leadership to the team following the decision the team experienced another blow with the transfers of guard alex jensen ahd forward eric heil than 30 advertised programs and events the univer sity gave students something to talk about and the department of state something to be proud of global union organized the cal endar of events with many pro grams sponsored by different groups offices and organizations on campus international education week programs are encouraged by the department of state to allow for recognition of different cultures and help students learn about other countries in an effort to rein force the need for understanding and peace in today's world while programs including the highly acclaimed diwali began nov 9 the official parade of flags that acted as the opening ceremonies to international week was held monday and was a success students of different backgrounds carried flags from all over the world and show cased international diversity international building competition ten teams of three to five stu dents each gathered in lamberton hall monday night to compete each team was given two hours and materials with which to create an interna tionally recognized structure materials such as cardboard popsicle sticks pipe cleaners string towels pushpins and tooth picks were used students were told it
