the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 11l no 14 tuesday october 28 2003 west advocates racial equality by matt konek news writer cornel west author and pro fessor of religion at princeton university discussed issues related to social and racial equality thursday to a large crowd that filled packard auditorium the lecture was part of lehigh'sjust globalization series and was sponsored by the philos ophy religion studies and africana studies departments and the humanities center west's main focus was the heart of american darkness which he believes is a disturbing undercurrent in american cul ture west said the united states gives an outer impression of inno cence and tolerance but inward ly contains problems of prejudice and persecution he said that in order for society to improve the individual is responsible for working to change society's con ditions we must have the courage to think for ourselves while recog nizing that this quest has unbe lievable risk west said chris forstall 04 said he believes west's insights can help improve american culture this is the humanist attitude that this country needs right now forstall said west repre sents humanism at its best west also stressed the need for all people to strive for an exam ined life he argued that people need to contemplate and analyze their own lives what does it mean to be human to move from womb to tomb west asked west said he especially hopes young students begin the process of self-reflection i hope and pray that every lovely undergraduate student walks out of a class and realizes your whole world view rests on pudding he said west said many american immigrants were persecuted in europe and that those people united themselves when they came to america believing they were superior to blacks the europeans moved away from their individual cultures when they came to america b&wpholo by amanda macmjllan lehigh's annual spooktacular took place from 1 p.m to 4 p.m oct 26 children from the local community came to campus for the festivities events included a haunted house in the university center trick-or-treating in trembly craft-making j in taylor and pumpkin carving at psi upsilon fraternity services provide academic support by diana zborovsky b&wphoto by alex schwendeman news writer many students do not seek the academic assistance they need because they are not aware of the office of academic support services the office offers many pro grams and resources for stu dents who need assistance with readmission housing withdraw al study abroad absences stu dents with disabilities tutoring and more the office of academic support services also offers a program called build better understanding of individuals with learning and other disabilities the program offers a web site linked on the academic support services web site which students can visit to learn more about learning dis abilities academic support services oversees and plans fall and spring orientations assists in first-year class registration and sponsors many other pro grams for first-year students these programs include the college ropes tour and the achievers program the college ropes tour is a collection of traveling work shops that take place in the resi dence halls throughout the aca demic year discussions are led with topics ranging from time management and study skills to relationships and the world of dating the achievers program is designed to offer assistance to first-year students on academ ic probation students in the program are each assigned a lehigh staff member as a men tor for the spring semester mentors help determine and monitor students academic problem areas refer students to the appropriate campus support services and provide them with support as they face the academ ic challenges ahead of them students bundle up on campus as autumn begins to give way to winter the first snow fell on the morning of oct 23 see west page 4 see support page 5 | ..... j lehigh defeats georgetown 45-24 at saturday's football game in a record-set ting performance see story page 16 sports 13-16 women's lax 13 volleyball 15 football 16 organization created to help premed stu dents find support from other premed students see story page 3 news 1-6 college news briefs 2 premedical society 3 british scientists say first male contraceptive pill could be on the market within the next five years see story page 9 science 7-9 male contraception 7 tigers attack 7 breat tissue toxins 9 quick in 1897 the aspirin company bayer mar keted heroin in the united states source www.amusingfacts.com
