the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 11l no 13 friday october 24 2003 all the lehigh news first clubs to raise money for cancer by da vina attar news writer plans are in the works for the 14th annual good scholar election a two-week campus event that will raise money for cancer research the good scholar election organized by theta delta chi fraternity has raised 437,802 from research and non-research contributions during the first 13 years of that amount 350,552 is restricted to research the campaign encourages special interest groups on cam pus such as fraternities sorori ties and other clubs to produce a candidate to raise money each organization pays a 100 entry fee for its candi date who is required to have a 3.25 cumulative gpa to par ticipate the official start for the good scholar election is sunday nov 9 when the can didates assemble in front of the alpha phi sorority house for the cancer research mile walk at 2:45 p.m the candidates and their sup porters walk for approximately one hour ending at delta sigma phi fraternity this is a symbolic gesture that all candidates are with us said good scholar chairman alvin cohen a retired eco nomics professor who has been involved in the campaign since its inception in 1989 in addition to the walk an election will be held from nov 9 to nov 23 in which people can vote for good scholars through donations polls will be set up on the sec ond floor of the university center and the atrium of the rauch business center every day from 11 a.m to 1 p.m and at the ulrich student center every day from 2 p.m to 4 p.m students can make donations with either cash or goldplus each dollar counts as one vote poet describes life in war-torn israel by leigh kosloski news writer highly acclaimed poet rachel tzvia back read tuesday from her collection of emotional poetry describing her experiences in war-torn israel approximately 50 students faculty and community members attended the event back spoke of her life in israel which she reflect ed upon in her award-winning poetry through her presentation titled placing the voice the personal and the political israel 2003 back encouraged people to lobby petitions and donate financial support that will work toward peace between palestinians and israelis i turn to you to be vocal and aggressive in raising up aware ness she said her works which include the 2001 publication azimuth and a hebrew version of the book published in the fall of 2000 were sold at the event also available was her most recent work the buffalo poems published in 2003 back read from azimuth and buffalo and shared stories that influenced particular poems she relayed stories of suicide bombers maimed children and the desecration of villages as sources of inspiration she also spoke about the 800 israelis and 2,500 palestinians who have been killed in the conflict the majority of these peo ple were unarmed consisting of women children and the elder ly she said further describing her life in israel back painted the picture of a horrific landscape torn by religious and landownership strife i am fearful for its future my future and my of such reactions a religious idol large posters of dictators spread throughout countries and of course television commercials each pander to our emotions with visual reminders and ideas such as company slogans audio creates reactions similar to visual media korem said he also claimed that the last two generations that have grown up in a mass media envi ronment are the most deceiv able people in world history widespread exposure to visual and auditory inducement has conditioned people to react to their emotions at the same time a proportionally deficient employment of dialogue and reading weakens people's logi cal mental reasoning korem made these initially anecdotal and later proven observations as he grew up while an investigative journal ist he developed the korem profiling system in an attempt to conduct more effective inter views later on korem began teaching this system to business es in their efforts to better under stand their customers and employees the profiling system
