armed robberies have occurred on the fringe of campus in the last two weeks and students are starting to wonder whether the police are doing everything they can to make the university a safe place to live police chief edward shupp said it is impossible for his force to predict where crimes are going to occur crime can happen any where he said i can put ten officers in one certain location because crimes have been occurring there it doesn't mean the next crime is going to occur there i don't have an officer to put on every street corner chris florio 04 doesn't think the police patrol as much as they should in certain areas you do see them around but not as often as most people would like he said most of the times you see them are when they're at die substation or johnson hall shupp said the community substation located in the campus square parking garage was created to increase safety for students in areas where the uni versity intersects with the rest of the community shupp said three officers work out of the substation on bike patrols he said they are on rotat ing shifts that overlap for about two hours and continue until 3 a.m every night the bike patrols specifically target off-campus stu dent housing areas including hillside east fifth street birkel and montclair avenues in addition to uie substation shupp said there are 18 more offi cers that work out of the main sta tion located in johnson hall these personnel run car patrols that cover all three cam puses as well as off-campus loca tions such as brodhead montclair birkel and carlton avenues and east fifth and summit streets shupp said two cars run during the day shift and it increases at night to as many as four or five cars i hear a lot of times well we don't see them shupp said unless you're looking out the window you're not going to see them you're not going to see every patrol officer that goes by allison schiefer 06 an off campus resident believes the police are doing an adequate job i feel extremely safe where i live she said despite the fact that i'm further away from the more dangerous areas of south bethlehem i still see die polite drive by once or twice a night in addition to bike and rai patrols shupp said there are nightly foot patrols diat cover the asa packer campus from 8 p.m to 4 a.m there are also two secu rity guards on patrol every night from !) p.m to 7 a.m they're pretty much the eyes and ears of die police shupp said shupp said he issues safety bul letins to the campus community when incidents such as the recent robberies occur shupp said follow-up bulletins usually occur only when an inves tigation has been concluded grace hall readies for reopening by jacqueline seltzer news writer grace hall will soon reopen for lehigh students and faculty to enjoy after almost a year of renovations a complete reconstruction of the building began last december the initial stage of construction was very slow and many problems were encoun tered in the beginning asbestos has to be removed and certain areas would not be completely reconstructed because of rock on the end of the building fac ing price hall the entire interior of the building was redone for such a large scale renovation the com plications were not overwhelm ing i think for a building that is 60 years old there have been relatively few complications joe sterrett executive director of athletics said enormous aesthetic changes have been made throughout grace hall the principal trans formation is that the lower bleachers have been changed to retractable bleachers sterrett says this change has created more space for floor events in addition the newly built mezzanine section that much larger than before the new mezzanine creates a more versa tile space there are more bath rooms a new elevator and an area designated for box seats the lehigh ticket office will also be relocated from taylor gym to grace hall this move makes it an easy stop for students walking down the new open staircase connecting grace hall to the ulrich student center sterrett said the open stairwell is con sidered a significant improve ment from the unnoticeable and narrow stairwells at the far ends of the buildings the renovations will also make it easier to schedule differ ent recreational sports intramu rals basketball practices volley ball games and wrestling match es the basketball team had encountered many problems last year regarding where to b&wphotu by ashuiyjounso practice when stabler arena was closed for various events now they will have a fixed place for practices other expectations for the new grace hall are for students to have a place to engage in recreational activities on their own time schedule my own ambition is that we will have kids playing bas ketball here at night sterrett said it is also hoped that student run organizations will be in charge of programming the dif ferent sports activities or recre ational events a new office for grace hall renovations include retractable bleachers and a larger mezzanine the building will reopen in october alumni donations increase by lauren eisner news vvritei lehigh was recently ranked seventh nationally for alumni giving an improvement from its previous ranking of 13th i think it's wonderful president gregory farrington said now only six more steps and we'll be where we belong - the last fiscal year lehigh received approximate ly 30 million in private gifts and grants the lehigh fund accounted for 11 million of all donations this achievement reflects die extraordinary generosity of literally thousands of lehigh alumni who believe their alma mater is worthy of their invest ment said vice-president for advancement bonnie devlin said i am so grateful for such loyal alumni all donations made to the lehigh fund can be either restricted or unrestricted restricted donations allow the donor to decide the area where their giving is spent such as the zoellner arts center or any of the four colleges unrestricted donations help the university balance its oper ating budget donations are asked for and collected in a variety of ways including letters phon a-thons e-mails and in-person see
