the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 42 tuesday april 8 2003 all the lehigh news first professors oppose war approach by lauren eisner news writer professor oles smolansky said he opposes the bush administration's utilititarian approach to the war in iraq dur ing a lecture thursday professors stephen cohen and smolansky led an open dis cussion tided war with iraq when will we know we won in whitaker lab thursday professor henri barkey was one of the main organizers of the event however he could not attend due to a family illness both professors agreed that barkey would have provided a viewpoint more representative of the bush administration smolansky noted that he would be quite subjective in sharing his feelings on the war's advancement he opposes the bush administration because of its utilitarian approach the audience ranged from international relations students to graduate students and local community members the student community has their own varying opinions con cerning the war there was stu dent support for the war i was upset there wasn't more of a pro-war discussion laura herr 06 said i do sup port the war and believe saddam is a threat and that he would use weapons of course we want to avoid war except when obviously all other choices have failed i agree with it i think we need to take saddam out of power kevin raftery 03 said i realize everyone doesn't sup port it but we need to support the president regardless smolansky went on to list canceled treaties and what he felt was a disregard for the international community by the current administration he also noted president bush's refusal to adhere to the international tribunal for war crimes while the united states personnel would not be subject to this it's part of this utilitarian production examines loss of innocence by chris morgan news writer there's a fire in the basement a sparkle on the stage and laughter in the air at the zoellner arts center the play pavel kohout's fiery farce is directed by michael phillips both a hilarious comedy and a thought-provoking drama the play brings up issues such as the loss of innocence safety and freedom and corruption among those we trust i think that fire in the basement as a literary piece is captivating and quite provok ing co-lead jill harrison 05 said the main theme of the play is an invasion of inno cence a proverbial rape it is a fine example of absurdism b&wphoto by tom steele goosey gander and other local merchants are now accepting goldplus as payment the program was initiated by dining services to give more options to students see page 5 athletes reach out to community by jacqueline seltzer student athletes have been helping the community through the new c.o.a.c.h program the acronym stands for community outreach by athletes who care about health there are approximately 250 athletes involved in the program that have worked on 26 projects with the local middle schools and high schools of the lehigh com munity surpassing last years 19 projects led by co-chairmans antonio marino and jessica depalo as well as the faculty organizer roseann corsi the c.o.a.c.h program is a way for lehigh to give back to the community especially the children every week the athletes go to three schools and discuss different topics with children such as goals and success their energy is very into the program and that is what makes it so special depalo said for example 80 student ath letes were involved in a five week program with brougual middle school surpassing last years 30 stu dents jackie santanasto a teacher a brougual middle school is pleased with the way the program has turned out the c.o.a.c.h program has been a successful program because our students respond well to lehigh kids and look forward when the come she said it is a great community resource because we are all neighbors and neighbors help each other out it is great to witness the close relationships that develop between the student athletes and the kids marino said for the past four years the major project of the c.o.a.c.h program has been adopt a family this past december the program adopted 19 underprivi leged families from the south side neighborhood center in the community it is not just athletes buying stuff they really invest their time depalo said corsi hopes the students benefit from the program i hope they take this experi cence with them when the leave here in the future corsi said depalo also attributes much of the success to corsi's hard work very rarely
