xxxviii no 17 price five cents invitation extended by president brown at college meeting friday former lehigh man tells of prevailing conditions in the orient most enthusiastic smoker in years held on eve of annual classic lehigh bows before terrific attack of lafayette team interesting speeches feature well attended meetings of student societies fighting against superior weight and experi ence brown and white loses to ancient rivals 28-6 rote scores for lehigh glick's speech features coach gives wonderful talk which stirs audience keady also speaks the meeting of the y m c a on sunday at 6.15 p m in drown hall was addressed by a m paget c e 10 who is spending a short time in this country after being in shanghai china ever since 1910 mr paget spoke on the life of a young man in the orient and gave many interesting facts con cerning conditions in the orient continued on page four mr paget stated many young men after graduation from college come to the orient full of life and vigor but due to the many tempta tions present there return to this country later in life broken down both morally and physically the reason is due to the fact that they forget or disregard their college and home training and is not caus ed by the fact that there are more temptations than right here at home one of the greatest temptations is drink which can be gotten in any form with no difficulty whatsoever some think that to drink whisky assures good health in china or ja pan but that is a serious misappre hension the temptation is increas ed too because nothing has to be paid for upon buying on the oth er hand sort of an i o u sys tem is in vogue which enables a person to pay for value received a month or so later in this way some men spend their salaries in a single evening but do not realize it at the college meeting on fri day held in packer hall at 11 a m charles brown president of the bethlehem rotary club and general superintendent of the le high & new england rail road invited the members of the lehigh football team to a dinner on wed nesday at noon at the kurtz res taurant as guests of the rotary club of bethlehem major john lang spoke asking that rifle shooting be recognized as a sport and have the backing of the athletic association he re viewed the work of the lehigh team at camp perry where they stood ninth out of a field of fifty six teams and were third of the eighteen college teams competing one of the advantages of rifle shooting is that it does not require brawn as in football or speed as it does in track but any man can shoot ; it only requires the effort frank frain announced that in view of the fact that suspension from the university was a too se vere penalty for any misdeeds the arcadia has decided to institute a new system of punishment it con sisted of ostracizing the student for a certain length of time during which period no student would be allowed to speak to the individual ostracized while on the campus the student will be required to wear a band on his coat-sleeve while ostracized following the college meeting a meeting of the freshman class was held nominations were taken for the offices of vice-president treas urer and secretary ballots will be prepared soon and an election held soccer team prepares for army and u of p the metallurgical society met last night at which time mr john j stone superintendent of the ar mor plate department of the beth lehem steel company gave an ex ceptionally interesting and instruct ive talk the subject was the manufacture and testing of armor plate k m downes 22 president of the society presided over the meet ing and introduced the speaker mr stone illustrated his talk with many lantern slides and in addition to these photographs were reflected on the screen showing various sta ges in the process of development of armor plate during the war the talk given monday night was not allowed to be given except to men working in the armor plate department of the steel company so that the subject was one about which little has been learned by the public and which therefore proved to be of unusual interest the bethlehem steel company manu factures and tests the armor plate but only under the direct supervi sion of the united states govern ment by whom it is used and for whom it must meet all requirements according to very definite specifica tions mr stone spoke from many years of experience as head of the armor plate department and the many factors included in armor plate manufacture and testing were therefore explained in a clear and concise manner a short business meeting was held immediately preceding mr stone's address the time most suitable for the next meeting of the society was discussed mr downes stated that as far as possible speak ers would be secured for meetings who will talk on subjects of inter est to members of all four classes and urged that members attend the meetings regularly refreshments of cider and dough nuts were enjoyed at the close of the meeting as well as the usual smokes line-plunges in fact as a whole the team played well and while out gained were not out-fought le high rallied in the second half and ended the game on the offensive in the first period lafayette kick ed off bessemer receiving lehigh could not penetrate the heavy la fayette line and storer kicked out of bounds on the lafayette 45-yard line lafayette also could not gain through the line but lehigh was penalized 15 yards and brunner carried the ball 20 yards from a triple pass however lafayette was set back on a penalty and as gazella and elliott could not gain brennan was forced to punt stor er returned the kick to gazella who received the ball on'his 10-yard line and ran it out 15 yards lafayette again could not gain and punted to hardie who fumbled when tackled but cusick recovered on his 32-yard line lehigh could not gain and storer's kick only travelled a few yards until it went out of bound's line-plunging mainly by elliott car ried the ball over brennan kicked the goal hardie returned the kick-off to his 27-yard line greer made 6 yards through the line but hardie could not gain and storer punted to lafayette's 37-yard line lafay ette in turn could not gain and punt ed to lehigh's 20-yard line two line-plunges by greer and bessemer only gained 5 yards and storer punted the kick going out of bounds 8 yards in front of the line of scrimmage elliott and brunner made it first down on lehigh's 17 yard line and several plunges off tackle by elliott carried the ball ov er brennan again kicked goal continued on page three following the kick-off lehigh could not gain and kicked to lafay ette on the latter's 45-yard line a 15-yard penalty was imposed on la fayette and although a forward pass regained part of the distance elliott failed to make first down by inches and lehigh took the ball lingle who replaced bessemer could not gain off tackle and a for ward pass hardie to lingle gain ed only 4 yards hardie punted lehigh went down to defeat be fore the heavier and stronger la fayette team last saturday after noon in taylor stadium by a 28 to 6 score the game was played be fore the largest crowd which ever witnessed one of this historic series almost 20,000 persons crowding the stands when the opening whistle blew while lafayette won she had to fight hard for every inch of ground gained twice the lighter lehigh team held the visitors for downs and were never forced to surren der the ball in a similar manner the brown and white team played a good game against a team which was 20 pounds per man heavier and knew a lot more football most of lafayette's gains were made on line-plunging although the forward pass proved effective on several occasions gazella whose running last year played such havoc with the lehigh defense was held well in check and very seldom could he get started it was left to doc elliott a freshman full back to gain most of the ground and time after time he plunged through the lehigh line for gains while within range of the goal-line he could not be stopped registering all four of the visitors touchdowns in the third period lehigh open ed up an aerial attack which was effective for a time and one touch down was scored by this route but later several were intercepted le high completed a number of passes but mostly for very short gains lehigh's failure to hold down the lafayette score in the first half was due partly to poor punting as three kicks which storer got off carried only from bto 15 yards after the beginning of the second half the kicking improved and enabled le high to hold the lafayette attack well in check each side scoring one touchdown after intermission in the lehigh line cusick did good work until injured and forced to retire roth played well against his veteran opponent brown and his passing was good greer did good work in backing up the line and made several good gains on naval society opens competition the naval engineering society wishes to announce that their poster competition is now open and that a prize of five dollars will be award ed to the best drawing which is passed in during the college year the competition is open to any man in the university and all men are urged to compete the society re serves the right to accept or reject any poster turned in and all of the men whose drawings are accepted will be reimbursed by the society for the cost of the drawing ma terials used the prize-winning poster will be chosen from the drawings which are accepted and the winner will be announced at the end of the college year the judges will be impartial shipping men in order to assure all of the competi tors that the prize distribution will be absolutely unbiased prominent alumni attend the game peppy speeches frenzied cheer ing pa jama-clad freshmen and snappy boxing and wrestling all worked together to make last fri day's lafayette smoker one of-the greatest in lehigh history more spirit was shown in that one even ing than in all the season before it the game-room of the gym was packed with students each one us ing his voice to the utmost in the cheering and singing the bi,g feature of the evening was the talk given to the students by head coach frank glick the like of which is seldom heard the powerful dynamic personality of the former football star stirred ev ery one of his hearers and he was accorded one of the greatest ova tions ever given to a coach at le high pandemonium reigned when the mentor concluded and the elec tric effect of his words will proba bly be remembered by all of his au dience for a long time to come a big surprise was tendered the student body when after exhorting the men to allow members of the football team the proper rest that night pat pazetti introduced tom keady former football coach at lehigh who came down from the university of vermont to see the big game keady paid much respect to glick's coaching and declared that the results of the team's cam paigning this year showed promise of a good team despite the many reverses keady's speech was fol lowed by applause little less than that given to glick another surprise of the evening was the appearance and speech of gus savaria 21 who came back for the game other speakers were abner h buck secretary of the bethlehem chamber of commerce natt m emery vice-president and w r okey okeson continued on page four the four interclass wrestling con tests between the freshmen and the sophomores were closely contested but resulted in a tie as each class the entertainment consisted of several boxing and wrestling bouts kenneth bevier 19 intercollegiate wrestling champion in the 125 pound class for two years and ber tolet captain of last year's squad 1 , gave an exhibition match willie laughlin and johnnie alex gave a pretty exhibition of boxing tom morrison and frankie alex also fought three rounds m e meet the mechanical engineering so ciety held a most successful meet ing last thursday evening when about seventy : five men gathered in the physics lecture room to hear three excellent speakers the pres ident of the society l c ricketts called the meeting to order and un der the head of new business read a challenge from the electrical en gineering society for a debate on the subject steam vs electric traction the challenge was unanimously accepted and it was decided that the rules for the de bate be formulated by a joint com continued on page four burr notice epitome notice there will be an important meet ing of the burr board in the burr room in drown hall next friday night at 7.15 all the competitors are to meet immediately afterwards about 7.30 in order to clear up some misunderstanding that the competition is already closed such is not the case and the purpose of this meeting is to straighten the matter out the lehigh soccer team was idle over the week-end but have begun practice for the west point and university of pennsylvania games this week west point will be play ed on wednesday and the univer sity of pennsylvania on saturday » realizing that in both of these games strong teams will be met ev ery member of the team is prac ticing hard daily with fernandez unable to play on account of a sprained ankle mercur has been moved to center forward with wal ters playing inside right however it is expected that fernandez will recover in time for the army game saunders has taken the place of sie mann at outside left two new men are being groomed as fullbacks grace and rogers and have shown good form the team will leave wednesday morning for west point the game being played that afternoon the probable line-up brewer goal trumbore right fullback men ezes left fullback ; lamb right halfback ; warren center
