the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 28 friday january 31 2003 all the lehigh news first 1 western recruitment office opens admissions officers to target west coast students from regional headquarters by ashley weakland but its location widens the uni versity's ability to appeal to a diverse population we want to increase the diversity of our campus from all angles racial ethnic geograph ic gender and talent diversity leiner said the office's location allows leiner and staff to be close in proximity and readily available to their targeted audience in addition the office plans on increasing awareness by par ticipating in college fairs by vis iting high schools by interview ing students and by counseling students and their parents on the admissions and financial aid processes leiner said leiner believes the office's ability to make a lasting impres sion on students is vital to its success it allows us to increase our presence on the west coast by helping us gain reverence from high schools and give their stu news writer dents a better understanding about what lehigh has to offer leiner said marketing lehigh to west coast schools is the biggest pri ority because essentially i am further developing the amount of interest applications and the actual number of students that come to lehigh from the west based on how our image is received by alleviating the costs of air fare from the lehigh valley to the west coast the office pro vides a more efficient and effec tive way of communicating with west coast students david randall the director of development and alumni out reach is in charge of linking alumni in the western states to their east coast alma mater he has already been contacted by many western alumni it's a place where alumni know they can reach us for a variety of reasons and connect lehigh has launched a west ern regional office in san francisco the office serves to attract more students to lehigh to diversify the campus and to enhance alumni contacts in western states john leiner 98 the west coast regional admissions offi cer is responsible for recruiting students from eight western states arizona california colorado hawaii new mexico nevada oregon and washington i perform all of the same admissions functions as the other admissions officers on campus except that i'm 3,000 miles away from campus leiner said the office serves not only to introduce and recruit students to lehigh from the west coast to the university randall said it gives lehigh an increasing presence in a region where the university hopes to build a stronger identity for itself the office will host a variety of events that unite alumni fac ulty and administration who visit or live in the western states recently the office co-host ed a well-attended post-holiday brunch in san francisco with dean mohamed el-aasser of the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied science as the featured guest the office is already experi encing an increase of alumni activity and will continue to work with the alumni associa tion's clubs i've heard from many alum ni since the office opened randall said they're delight ed to have us here and eager to see more lehigh activities in the future freshmen locked out of room decisions by liz conroy news writer beginning next fall freshmen will no longer be able to choose a residence hall preference housing will still be assigned on a first-come first-serve basis according to when deposits are returned however freshmen will only be able to decide whether they would like to live in fresh men-only hous-ing substance free housing or a single room allison schiefer 06 said she believes the new system may help to reduce some of the repu tations that different dorms have m&m is known as the party dorm while lower cents is real ly calm she said residential services said the new policy will be an improve ment there are certain pre-con ceived notions and stereotypes that we don't want to perpetu ate assistant director of residen tial services lawrence breiner said besides how are the fresh men really to know what they want the change in policy was made to avoid the excessive dis appointment when freshmen were frequently not assigned to their first housing choice for some reason the fresh men feel like the only place that would make them happy would be their first choice when all of our housing options are of equal quality breiner said we are taking away that choice jesse powell 05 said he agrees with the new policy it seems to me like by taking away stu dents right to choose there are some differences between the freshmen dorms and students that visit the school and check a bunch of them out should be given some kind of option powell said there are the people who want the reputation of a certain house and now they won't be peter triano studies in his dravo house triple room next year's freshmen will not be able to choose their residence hall health center to charge for condoms by jocelyn raskin news writer the health center has started to charge students for condoms instead of giving them out for free people took too many vera partem health center activ ities coordinator said susan kitei director of the health center said small groups of people would continuously come into the health center and take as many con-doms as they could the goal now is to limit the amount of condoms people can take at once so that there are enough for everyone requesting them kitei feels supplying peo ple with relatively cheap con doms in small amounts is more important than giving away large amounts kitei also mentioned that condoms are still free whenever a residence hall or a greek house signs up for the sexperts program
