sport expenditures released to assist poll on athletics students will vote oct 4 to show board of control what sport they prefer to have dropped varsity football is only activity having profit see editorial on page 2 the official statement of receipts and expenditures of all lehigh sports including freshman is published in this issue for the information of students who will vote in the poll to be conducted oct 4 this state ment was obtained from the office of j g petrikin graduate manager of athletics the poll was suggested by the board of control in order to find out what sports the students preferred to have dropped in case the board definitely decided that such a move be made the university showed a deficit of 6,195.98 last year as far as athletic contests are concerned football was the only sport to show a profit and this gain was much less than the preceding year 13,106.84 was realized from the gridiron game freshman football showed the greatest loss 3,507.94 students asked to vote the board of control arcadia and the brown and white board who together are managing the poll request that all students vote the ballots which will be printed in the brown and white will be self-ex planatory members of the circulation staff of the paper will collect the ballots at the various living groups it is urged that the heads of the living groups co-operate in this matter grid banquet is considered pi delta epsilon will seek campus opinion on function campus opinion as to the advis ability of holding a gridiron ban quet this year will be sought it was decided at the first meeting of pi delta epsilon national journalistic fraternity last night at drown hall the gridiron banquet is held un der the auspices of pi delta ep silon for the purpose of ridiculing faculty members and outstanding students it was not held last year because the suggested date conflict ed with house party week-end the feasibility of a pictorial mag azine on campus life or a razz sheffield england carnegie in stitute university of minnesota university of chicago and yale university dr swarm was vice president of the washington academy of sci ences he is a fellow of the royal physical society and has received the honorary degree of master of arts from yale dr swarm is a member of sigma xi and is asso ciate editor of the journal of the franklin institute the structure of portraits some of the paint ings will probably be recognized by students who are familiar with the hills around allentown bethlehem and easton professor howland said a larger group of about 50 prints including the most outstanding and characteristic prints of 1931 is also to be exhibited 63 try out for glee club thursday at drown hall sixty-three men reported for the glee club try-outs in drown place between 10 a m and 5 p m monday oct 13 in drown hall it was announced at the first meeting of the arcadia wednesday night charles halsted president an nounced that members of arcadia would enforce the freshman regula tions "-- according to clifford harrison freshman regulations will continue to be enforced by the arcadia until organization of the sophomore class is completed to fix cheering section a motion was passed that all freshmen be required to sit in a specified cheering section so far the section has not been fixed the arcadia voted to buy sweat ers for the eight cheer leaders and a committee consisting of mark w henricks chairman harold za briskie and clifford e harrison was appointed for the purpose of purchasing them it was voted that the arcadia contribute 25 to the brown key society if the board of control would contribute the same amount since the board of control has not replied to this the arcadia has not been able to act the date for the next meeting of arcadia has been set for mon day night oct 24 rhodes applications due before oct 21 oxford scholarships provide three years study lehigh men who wish to try for a rhodes scholarship should apply to professors carothers palmer or dean mcconn before oct 15 these applications will be sent to the state committee on rhoads scholarship before oct 22 the candidate to be eligible must be a male citizen of the united states between the ages of 19 and 25 and must have completed at least his sophomore year at college the selection of the candidates will largely depend on the men's literary and scholastic ability and attainments his qualities of man hood truth courage devotion to duty sympathy kindliness and fel lowship his exhibition of moral force of character and of interests in his schoolmates and his physi cal vigor according to a statement issued by the state committee the scholarship carries a stipend of about 2,000 a year for three years the first two years will be spent at oxford while a third year may be taken there or elsewhere in great britain lafayette to offer courses free to aid unemployed lafayette college will offer courses in engineering economics history government law and other subjects of special interest to laymen in an effort to aid the unemployed the courses will be offered free of charge to men over 30 this plan is expected to enable the un employed to fill their time in a worthwhile manner and to give them a greater opportunity for use fulness in the future school betters a c average for first time straight a grades ob tained by boughner el more johnson mayer last semester leonard hall keeps top rank throughout entire year the highest average the entire university has ever obtained was made during the second semester of last year with an average of better than c 2.011 four men obtained a straight a average for the second semester of last year they are j l bough ner arts 32 w c elmore eng phys 32 victor mayer arts 34 and w a johnson met e 35 leonard hall gaining first place for both semesters bettered its first semester average of 2.372 by 471 to get 2.843 this is the highest av erage ever obtained by any living group according to all available sta tistics two fraternities were placed on scholastic probation pi kappa al pha and delta phi both having fall en below the required 1.6 for two semesters in succession house ratings change many living groups took large moves in the scholastic rank lad der delta upsilon dropped only 160 in its average yet went from fourth place with 2.092 to 22nd with 1.933 in the second semester tay lor hall section c jumped from 17th place with 1.913 to third place with 2.390 the present juniors succeeded in passing the sophomofes in the sec ond semester after having been de feated in the first semester the non-fraternity group raised their level from tenth to fourth in the second semester one hundred and ninety-eight men succeeded in obtaining b averages last semester of these 39 were freshmen class of 1935 46 were sophomores 1934 54 juniors 1933 and 59 seniors 1932 fif ty-four were enrolled in arts 26 in business and 118 in the college of engineering the averages of place between 10 a m and 5 p m monday oct 13 in drown hall it was announced at the first meeting of the arcadia wednesday night charles halsted president an nounced that members of arcadia would enforce the freshman regula tions "-- according to clifford harrison freshman regulations will continue to be enforced by the arcadia until organization of the sophomore class is completed to fix cheering section a motion was passed that all freshmen be required to sit in a specified cheering section so far the section has not been fixed the arcadia voted to buy sweat ers for the eight cheer leaders and a committee consisting of mark w henricks chairman harold za briskie and clifford e harrison was appointed for the purpose of purchasing them it was voted that the arcadia contribute 25 to the brown key society if the board of control would contribute the same amount since the board of control has not replied to this the arcadia has not been able to act the date for the next meeting of arcadia has been set for mon day night oct 24 rhodes applications due before oct 21 oxford scholarships provide three years study lehigh men who wish to try for a rhodes scholarship should apply to professors carothers palmer or dean mcconn before oct 15 these applications will be sent to the state committee on rhoads scholarship before oct 22 the candidate to be eligible must be a male citizen of the united states between the ages of 19 and 25 and must have completed at least his sophomore year at college the selection of the candidates will largely depend on the men's literary and scholastic ability and attainments his qualities of man hood truth courage devotion to duty sympathy kindliness and fel lowship his exhibition of moral force of character and of interests in his schoolmates and his physi cal vigor according to a statement issued by the state committee the scholarship carries a stipend of about 2,000 a year for three years the first two years will be spent at oxford while a third year may be taken there or elsewhere in great britain lafayette to offer courses free to aid unemployed lafayette college will offer courses in engineering economics history government law and other subjects of special interest to laymen in an effort to aid the unemployed the courses will be offered free of charge to men over 30 this plan is expected to enable the un employed to fill their time in a worthwhile manner and to give them a greater opportunity for use fulness in the future school betters a c average for first time straight a grades ob tained by boughner el more johnson mayer last semester leonard hall keeps top rank throughout entire year the highest average the entire university has ever obtained was made during the second semester of last year with an average of better than c 2.011 four men obtained a straight a average for the second semester of last year they are j l bough ner arts 32 w c elmore eng phys 32 victor mayer arts 34 and w a johnson met e 35 leonard hall gaining first place for both semesters bettered its first semester average of 2.372 by 471 to get 2.843 this is the highest av erage ever obtained by any living group according to all available sta tistics two fraternities were placed on scholastic probation pi kappa al pha and delta phi both having fall en below the required 1.6 for two semesters in succession house ratings change many living groups took large moves in the scholastic rank lad der delta upsilon dropped only 160 in its average yet went from fourth place with 2.092 to 22nd with 1.933 in the second semester tay lor hall section c jumped from 17th place with 1.913 to third place with 2.390 the present juniors succeeded in passing the sophomofes in the sec ond semester after having been de feated in the first semester the non-fraternity group raised their level from tenth to fourth in the second semester one hundred and ninety-eight men succeeded in obtaining b averages last semester of these 39 were freshmen class of 1935 46 were sophomores 1934 54 juniors 1933 and 59 seniors 1932 fif ty-four were enrolled in arts 26 in business and 118 in the college of engineering the averages of
