the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 27 tuesday january 28 2003 all the lehigh news first 1 musical showcases department by greg meyer news writer the music department pre sented its second full-length musical theater production in three years this weekend at zoellner arts center the cast of the music man led by tyler tate 04 and carolyn shemwell 03 per formed three sold out shows in baker hall on friday and saturday evening and sunday afternoon alex senchak 06 was the assistant stage manager for the production he said he hopes the overwhelming response will bode well for future musical the ater productions at lehigh the success of the show was that it was a fully internal lehigh show senchak said senchak said that opera pro ductions in the past have involved many outside actors as the leads this production allowed more lehigh students including many who are not otherwise involved in the the ater or music departments to participate jill harrison 05 was a prin cipal dancer in the show and served as dance captain the music man has been such a pleasure she said i have enjoyed both the cast and the production team immense harrison hopes the success of this production will yield a future for musical theater at lehigh i think we've gotten some thing started here she said students who attended the b&wphoto by tomsteele show said they were impressed with the production i'm not a huge fan of the show but i think lehigh did a president gregory farrington and his wife jean talk with cast members of the music man after the sunday performance the musical opened to a sold out crowd friday at zoellner arts center program allows campus to speak by randi greenberg michael lupori director of dining services served as a guest speaker for lehigh's new campus speaks program last thursday campus speaks is a new program designed to give stu dents the opportunity to pose questions and learn more about current issues from the adminis tration gretchen hill residence life coordinator for campus square assisted in designing the program with the help of gryphon corey harrison 03 last semester hill helped run a diversity speaks forum which gave students the opportu nity to discuss diversity and its impact on the community campus speaks is similar to diversity speaks in that it gives students the chance to talk open ly with administration about cur rent issues on campus the program was designed to give upperclass students an oppor tunity to feel as if the administra tion does listen to their questions and concerns hill said also it is great for the administrators to hear feedback from students thursday's program provid ed students the opportunity to ask questions lodge complaints and provide suggestions about food at lehigh issues ranged from offering more variety in the upper university center to creating programs to help meet the needs of religious students andrea englander 05 sug gested that there be more of a variety of kosher foods on passover it would be really great if we were given some more options on passover besides matzah englander said lupori agreed and said he is considering working out a pro gram with the hillel society to offer the services needed to reli gious students we don't have the popula tion or base to run a kosher din ing room lupori said however we would be inter ested in running a program with hillel possibly along the lines of a meal plan or south mountain gold option news writer hill said she believes that some students feel as though they are not listened to our goal is to have students interact with administration so they feel heard hill said in fact the administrators really want to listen to what students at lehigh want forums are a great way to learn what students want lupori said we really want to make sure we're meeting all student needs in addition e-mail is another option available to students who can not make it to a specific meeting thursday's meeting also focused on the possibility of fratenity bring life to lower uc by maura kutner news writer kappa alpha psi fraternity hosted its first kappa kafe on thursday in the lower dining hall of the university center the event was held at both lunch and dinner and included music and trivia games with prizes from the university book store and jazzman's cafe students had the chance to relax during their meals play a few games of name that tune and listen to music responsible for all the event's music was disc jockey cedric hickerson who plays at all kappa alpha psi's major par ties and was a kappa member at the university of rhode island the main objective of the event was to bring some fun to the uc while giving the kappas some exposure we want to get attention and make the kappas known graduate student louis brown a brother of kappa alpha psi said i've never seen a dj come to a cafeteria before it's something different we want people to look back on their years here and say i had fun at lehigh proudly wearing the crimson and cream colors of their frater nity the brothers of kappa alpha psi certainly put a differ ent spin on lunch and dinner yet for many of them the event was much more signifi cant after a 15-year struggle to obtain university recognition of their fraternity kappa alpha see musical page 3 see campus page 3 see kappa page 3 men's track loses by one
