major james green j a brodhead alumni start work bureau j a brodhead 07 ap pointed head of new placement service the creation of a university place ment service and the appointment of john andre brodhead 07 as its first director was announced by president richards at the first meet ing of the faculty sept 12 the placement service will be un der the auspices of the alumni as sociation and will co-ordinate and extend the various phases of place ment work prevailing here includ ing student part-time employment senior placement alumni replace ment and teacher placement ac cording to mr brodhead to give students work at present concentrated atten tion is being given to the securing of part-time employment for under graduates this employment in cludes waiting on tables assisting at athletic and social functions cler ical work in the various university departments and offices selling of standard articles to students solicit ing for laundries cleaners and sim ilar business houses tutoring and various other occupations besides his degree in mechanical engineering he holds a master of arts degree from yale in educa tion he lived for some years in new haven conn and was in charge of the y m c a college in that city heads department of education here dr h b thomas was for merly professor at rutgers a department of education sep arate from the department of phil osophy and headed by dr h b thomas former director of educa tional research in the springfield mass schools has been established this semester in packer hall an independent department of education will not only facilitate better instruction of men preparing for the teaching profession pres ident richards stated but will also strengthen and individualize the formerly combined departments of philosophy and education the head of the new department dr thomas received his bachelor of science degree from colgate and that of doctor of philosophy from harvard he has been superinten dent of various schools in michi gan and has taught at rutgers and the university of missouri during the war he served for fifteen months with the a e f in france chi phi and sigma phi epsilon lead in num ber of pledges with 1 2 and 11 delta sigma phi delta upsilon trail with three men each survey shows 1 3 fewer ac ceptances than at end of last season one hundred and ninety-two men were pledged to 28 fraternities sat urday night at the conclusion of another rushing season three houses have not completed their lists as yet chi phi and sigma phi epsilon led the fraternities with 12 and 11 men respectively while sigma phi gets bequest 10,000 principle of c e award donated to lehigh the sum of 10,000 has recently been received by lehigh university through the will of the late garrett linderman hoppes's mother ac cording to natt m emery vice president the money was originally set aside in memory of garrett linder man hoppes who graduated from lehigh in 1887 and died in 1910 and the interest on the money in the form of a life annuity was to be used to establish a garrett lin derman hoppes scholarship in civil engineering this arrangement con tinued until last month when fol lowing the death of the annuitant the 80,000 the registration of less than 350 freshmen this year emphasizes a trend which has been manifest since 1928 when the size of the first year classes started decreasing the freshman class of 1928 numbered 527 but the following year the fac ulty ruled that new york regent's examinations would not be accept ed in lieu of entrance examinations with the result that in 1929 the freshman class dropped to 458 the years of 1930 and 1931 show ed first year classes of about 430 with the present class smaller by about 100 men although no defin ite reason has been advanced for this drop it is believed that cur rent business conditions are one of the controlling factors more apply for aid despite the increased financial pressure evidenced by an unusual number of applications for financial aid and scholarships approximate ly 1,400 students have registered for the 1932-33 sessions of the uni versity this figure which includes a large number of transfers from other schools is about the same as the enrollment last year it has been announced by pres ident charles russ richards that by rigid economics the university will be able to operate during the coming year at a saving of about 80,000 over last year's budget in spite of the fact that considerable improvements have been made in both the physical plant and the per sonnel of the faculty following the policy inaugurated last year no formal opening exer cises were held but as the first chapel of the year thursday dr claude g beardsley professor of moral and religious philosophy greeted the students and outlined the policy of religious instruction to be presented at the conclusion of the exercises the frosh donned their dinks for the first time and the new year was officially started senior electricals chosen for prizes horn memorial fund provides two more awards the names of the men chosen to compete for the francis dupont memorial prizes have been an nounced by prof stanley s seyfert acting head of the department of electrical engineering they are william d hickman walter w felton charles w cooper and james f willenbecher all seniors in the department of electrical en gineering in order to compete for these prizes which amount to 100 first prize and 50 second prize the men must write a thesis on a study of variable speed character istics for motor drives of indus trial machines the subject chosen for this year this fund was established in 1929 by leonard s homer e e and is awarded annually to the sen iors who submit the best thesis on the subject designated by the don or after having conducted research work prizes of 40 and 20 will be awarded annually to the two sen iors in the department of electrical engineering making the best records in seminar the fund for these prizes accord ing to modified e for absence abolished a modification of lehigh's cut rules was announced at the beginning of the semester by as sociate dean g b curtis according to dean curtis a student who absents himself from a lecture or recitation will no longer receive a grade of e but a grade of abs an ab sence from a regularly scheduled or announced quiz laboratory period seminar or drill will bring a grade of f in case of the consecutive ab sence from all classes extending over a period of one week or an absence from a regularly sched uled or announced quiz labora tory period seminar or drill the student may apply to the dean for an excuse previously the period required for excused cuts was two weeks control board alters policy all publicity to pass through alumni asso ciation the office of appeared sept 21 this was the freshman number and illustrated the new policy of the burr this year instead of a great deal of ma terial from other schools this issue of the burr contains a minimum of borrowed material freshmen rushing and registra tion were the subjects handled the feature story was a rushing guide for freshmen giving information about lehigh fraternities the freshman cover was drawn by nor man alper art editor the adver tising has been livened up by novel advertisements and the reading mat ter is more sophisticated according to j j roessle 33 editor in chief the october burr will be a girls number which will present lehigh's femmes in a novel manner he also announced that competition is open for art and edi torial men governing body says at least one athletic ac tivity must be abolish ed as economy move new members are elected to executive committee faculty may now pay tax on football admissions at pet rikin's office a student poll to determine which sport of the university the students wish to abolish as an economy move was approved at the board of con trol of athletics meeting monday afternoon the board pointed out that it is necessary to abolish at least one sport and that by means of the poll the undergraduates will be given an opportunity to show their prefer ence ballots for the poll are to be pub lished in the oct 4 issue of brown and white and figures showing the costs of each sport will be publish ed in the friday issue of this week a box will be placed on the first floor of christmas-saucon hall where ballots may be cast from wednesday oct 5 to saturday oct 8 it was also decided that the ex ecutive committee should confer with j a brodhead director of th newly organized placement service in regard to additional student con values for lehigh's letter grades have been assigned by fac ulty action during the past year and will go into effect this semes ter the change in letter value is brought about chiefly through the altering of the value of the a from 5 to 4 in determining graduation honors as a result of the change degrees with highest honors are given to those who have attained an average of not less than 3.75 in their last two years ot work at the university degrees with high honors are awarded on a basis of a 3.5 aver age and degrees with honors are given for an average of 3 in pro portion to the change f 80,000 the registration of less than 350 freshmen this year emphasizes a trend which has been manifest since 1928 when the size of the first year classes started decreasing the freshman class of 1928 numbered 527 but the following year the fac ulty ruled that new york regent's examinations would not be accept ed in lieu of entrance examinations with the result that in 1929 the freshman class dropped to 458 the years of 1930 and 1931 show ed first year classes of about 430 with the present class smaller by about 100 men although no defin ite reason has been advanced for this drop it is believed that cur rent business conditions are one of the controlling factors more apply for aid despite the increased financial pressure evidenced by an unusual number of applications for financial aid and scholarships approximate ly 1,400 students have registered for the 1932-33 sessions of the uni versity this figure which includes a large number of transfers from other schools is about the same as the enrollment last year it has been announced by pres ident charles russ richards that by rigid economics the university will be able to operate during the coming year at a saving of about 80,000 over last year's budget in spite of the fact that considerable improvements have been made in both the physical plant and the per sonnel of the faculty following the policy inaugurated last appeared sept 21 this was the freshman number and illustrated the new policy of the burr this year instead of a great deal of ma terial from other schools this issue of the burr contains a minimum of borrowed material freshmen rushing and registra tion were the subjects handled the feature story was a rushing guide for freshmen giving information about lehigh fraternities the freshman cover was tivity must be abolish ed as economy move new members are elected to executive committee faculty may now pay tax on football admissions at pet rikin's office a student poll to determine which sport of the university the students wish to abolish as an economy move was approved at the board of con trol of athletics meeting monday afternoon the board pointed out that it is necessary to abolish at least one sport and that by means of the poll the undergraduates will be given an opportunity to show their prefer ence ballots for the poll are to be pub lished in the oct 4 issue of brown and white values for lehigh's letter grades have been assigned by fac ulty action during the past year and will go into effect this semes ter the change in letter value is brought about chiefly through the altering of the value of the a from 5 to 4 in determining graduation honors as a result of the change degrees with highest honors are given to those who have attained an average of not less than 3.75 in their last two years ot work at the university degrees with high honors are awarded on a basis of a 3.5 aver age and degrees with honors are given for an average of 3 in pro portion to the change f
