the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 19 tuesday november 12 2002 all the lehigh news first play showcases ireland by randi greenberg news writer the department of theater premiered martin mcdonagh's play the cripple of inishmaan on friday evening in the diamond theater auditions for the cripple of inishmaan occurred prior to labor day and the cast has been busy working on the pro duction ever since the final cast was condensed to nine actors according to the director augustine ripa the cast spent a great deal of time working on their irish characterization for the first three weeks we had many informal meetings which helped the actors work on their accents ripa said during that time the actors also studied the dramaturgy and the background of the play ripa also said the cast and crew have been doing an excellent job the group has been fantastic ripa said each actor has put many long hours into the perfor mance and i feel they are so well prepared the production of all that fall directed by pam pepper which premiered in november was also set in ireland according to ripa the theater department did not plan on having an irish semester however he thought it was nice to be able to tie the two productions together the setting of the play is on the island of inishmaan inishmaan is one of the three aran islands off ireland's west coast last spring claire byrne 03 undertook a special research project while studying in dublin byrne's project included col lecting information to help with the production of the cripple of inishmaan according to ripa byrne's unique experience helped the cast and crew to delve into the world of the play in addition byrne was able to serve as an accent coach helping the cast fully develop their irish accents the play is about extreme characters under an extreme location using extreme lan guage to make universal obser vations ripa said it's just plain funny ripa believes that the audi ence will react favorably to the performance search for dean continues by kirk sobell news writer students will have the oppor tunity to voice their opinions of who they think the next dean of arts and sciences should be in a meeting on thursday in neville hall room 3 at 4:30 p.m the college of arts and sciences is at the core of what we do said richard durand dean of the college of business and economics and head of the search committee over half of the hours our cbe students take are in the arts and sciences it's in the best of all our interests and it impacts the entire univer sity we need the best carl moses associate dean of the college of arts and sciences and member of the search com mittee said the meeting will allow the committee to get a sense of what issues should be addressed and what characteris tics are important in selecting the new dean it could be that students realize that they would like to nominate someone he said durand said any names of can didates would be kept confidential b&w photo by hannah maxwell until february when campus visits will be held we don't want anything leaking back to their current insti tution moses added durand said it was important to note that the new dean will not be someone just looking for a job he said the candidates will have lots of options at other insti tutions and that it is the search committee's duty to convince them that lehigh is the right place durand said in january the students perform in friday's premiere of the cripple of inishmaan in zoellner's diamond theater the production is set on the island of inishmann off the west coast of ireland annual fast benefits world hunger by nancy kanetsky lehigh will be hosting its 13th annual fast for a world harvest campaign on nov 21 all proceeds will be donated to oxfam america an organi zation which works to remedy world hunger and poverty among other humanitarian goals last tuesday and wednesday volunteers worked at booths in the ulrich student center the university center rathbone hall and brodhead in order to encourage students with meal plans to sign-up and donate their lunches over 900 lehigh students have signed up for the fast and additional cash donations have been also been collected each of these students will forfeit his or her lunch on nov 21 and two dollars the cost of food for a meaj per student will be donated to oxfam america oxfam's student coordi nator lyndsey leach 03 was responsible to sort through various materials and recruit volunteers to work at the sign up booths a few days before the fast she will remind the 900-plus students not to eat lunch on nov 21 leach received a great deal of help from the girls in the alpha gamma delta sorority she said about 30 to 40 percent of the house volunteered to work at the oxfam sign-up booths i wanted to get my house involved in community service alpha gam sister emilie bender 04 said part of it is required to be on-campus and i thought this was a good way to do it the fast for a world harvest campaign is an inter national effort with oxfam functioning in over 100 coun tries the organization works with local partners and numer ous other campaigns in order to alleviate poverty and injus tice in the united states the fast for a world harvest campaign commonly takes place on the thursday before thanksgiving the fact that it's before thanksgiving a time when
