during the second period lehigh marched down the field for 70 yards and a score and threaten ed several times later two of state's touchdowns were scored on the opening game of the season was played on the home field with susquehanna and the up-state col legians were defeated by three touchdowns the following satur day the team journeyed down to rutgers and beat the heavy scarlet team by one touchdown on a muddy field which greatly slowed up the lehigh attack the coaching staff at lehigh this year is the most numerous and prob ably the best in local football his tory to assist him coach glick has had lamberton end coach and parisette line coach both from princeton murphy and pazzeti from last year's staff while bosey reiter and okeson have helped at times in view of the hard early season schedule head coach glick decided to develop the men slowly and point the entire season toward the lafay ette game the other games were to be preliminaries for this main event while the football season to date has not been an entire success yet much has been accomplished the opening of the school year found only four men from last year's team on hand and very few second-string men available this made it neces sary to develop over half the team from men who had never played college football before lehigh lafayette lafayette's excellent string of eight consecutive victories outweighs lehigh's efforts on the gridiron undefeated lafayette has the edge on lehigh eleven lehigh is slowly closing up the gap which now has be come very small students to gather at big meet ing on eve of the great clash i since coach glick has been keeping something in reserve all year the game last saturday showed that le high has at last struck its stride and much is expected of the brown and her 1921 season on september 24 administering a crushing defeat to muhlenberg by the score of 48 to 0 this over whelming victory was not due so much to the superiority of the la fayette team as to the evident lack of practice and teamwork on the part of muhlenberg they showed a few flashes of their future strong aerial attack when they completed several forward passes for gains but that was all lafayette was able to gain at will and after scor ing 21 points in the first period sub stituted most of the reserves for the remainder of the game the following saturday the ma roon and white scored its one no table triumph of the season when it nosed out pittsburg 6to 0 it is doubtful if lafayette would have been victorious in this contest ex cept for a questionable decision by tiny maxwell the field judge when pitt after a strong offensive was within the shadow of lafay ette's goal warner the panther coach sent in a substitute who it is claimed spoke to the quarterback before one play was completed for this offense maxwell penalized the pitt team and thus apparently saved the day for lafayette in this game lafayette gave evidence of the great team which she possessed but since then has not been as hard pressed and her real strength is unknown captain lehecka broke his ankle early in this engagement and has not been in the line-up since but the in dications are that he will be in shape for saturday's game dickinson her next opponent was conquered by a 27 to 0 score and at no time was a dangerous foe in bucknell the eastonians met a tartar and only managed to win because their steam-roller tactics wore down the lewisburg defense bowser the giant bucknell back taxed the la fayette line to its utmost to prevent him from crashing through on his numerous line-plunges the fol lowing week fordham was played at the polo grounds and met de feat by a2bto 7 score they put up a strong fight but were over continued on page seven burr notice the administration office an nounces the publication of a uni versity directory containing the names and addresses ofi all the members of the faculty and the student body this directory meets a need which has long been felt and the accuracy of the publi cation makes it invaluable to the students and the faculty alike copies have been sent to the sev eral living groups and one to each member of the faculty anyone who desires a copy may secure it at the supply bureau for thirty cents which is the cost price as only five hundred copies of the di rectories have been printed those who desire them should get them at once 1924 men notice to-morrow in taylor stadium time-worn rivals will clash in the blue-ribbon football event of the season in this section it will be the conclusion of hostilities in the 1921 campaign for the veteran and un defeated lafayette team and le high's squad of yearling players while lehigh to date has failed to impress as strongly as her rival nevertheless there is a most opti mistic feeling prevailing in beth lehem from the standpoint of their sea son's records lafayette will enter the game a heavy favorite at no time in the last ten years has such an apparent difference in form been shown the easton team started the year with practically every man back from last year's strong aggre gation in addition several new players of ability have been devel oped to date lafayette has won eight games and lost none scoring 246 points against her opponents 20 only in the second game of the year that with the university of pittsburg was lafayette held to less than four touchdowns buck nell pittsburg fordham rutgers and pennsylvania are numbered a mong the maroon and white's vic tims pensi being defeated by a 38 to 6 score on the basis of comparative scores lafayette stands well above lehigh rutgers held lehigh to one touchdown while lafayette ran up 35 points against that team the great strength of the lafay ette team lies in the line which av erages over 200 pounds and is con sidered one of the best in the east so far this year lafayette has re sorted only to straight football to win line-bucks from double and triple passes being a favorite play the system used by them is based on plays which coach sutherland learned at pittsburg under pop warner in spite of the disparity in strength of the two teams lehigh holds hopes of a victory the early season games are not an indication of the true strength of the team coach sutherland put his men through long hard scrimmages the early part of the week and signal drill the latter part the weather was clear and cold all week and the men had to work hard to keep warm all the regulars reported for practice and are said to be in fine condition captain joe le hecka also appeared in uniform and for the first time since the pittsburg game on october 1 when he broke his ankle he ran through the sig nals with the second squad his ankle is feeling fine and he expects to get in the game to-morrow scrimmages all week have been scrimmages in which the scrubs were supplied with lehigh forma tions and plays all sophomores who have not as yet paid their assessment to w springsteen 24 are requested to see him at once in the history of lehigh since the first lafayette game it has been a time-honored tradition of the university to hold a big rally on the night before the battle it is looked upon by the alumni as the big preliminary event of the foot ball season so great have grown the proportions of these assemb lages in recent years that this year the lehigh home club will hold a beat lafayette dinner for the benefit of those alumni who will be unable to crowd into the student meeting the dinner will be held at the kurtz restaurant when the speaker will be r j shine kirk lehigh's contractor-author a star well to stop for a moment to look into the records of past battles according to the most reliable records lafayette leads in the series by four victories having won 27 to lehigh's 23 two games one in 85 and the other in 89 re sulted in ties but since then one team or the other has been able to come off the field victorious two games are disputed one in 85 the first one of the series of two re sulted in a scoreless tie but was awarded to lafayette the other in 86 was credited to lafayette by a 4 to 0 score but is disputed by lehigh lafayette has suffered the worst defeat when in 1917 the brown and white scored a 78 to 0 victory over her rivals the greatest score the maroon has amassed was in 1906 when lehigh was overwhelmed 53 to 0 lehigh's greatest succession of victories came under the tutilage of tom keady when 6 victories were chalked up in 9 attempts this series of games is complete from 1884 with the only exception of 96 when no game was played from 1884 to 1901 two games were held each year but this practice was thought unnecessary and so discon tinued continued on page eight the following are the scores of all the lehigh-laf ayette games : brown and white vol xxxviii
