the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 110 no 2 friday september 6 2002 all the lehigh news first fraternities ousted during summer by anthony brichta j assistant news editor students returning this fall have probably noticed that two fraternities pi kappa alpha and sigma nu are no longer part of lehigh's greek system pike an off-campus house has been removed from campus for two years while sigma nu has been terminated indefinitely assistant dean of students michael carey said pike has been removed from campus for two years they are not to exist as a frater nity they cannot take on new members or collect dues the suspension is a result of hazing done during the spring but details on the content was not available they were found responsi ble of hazing new members they endangered the life and safety of their members carey said a strong greek system does not allow hazing eric miller 03 a member of pike believes the punish ment was too strict i feel that the two year sus pension came as a harsher than deserved punishment miller said i would like to think that after the suspension period is over i could return to lehigh to see a new pike chapter but i know that it is a slim chance that lehigh will actually ever re-instate a fraternity once they are removed sigma nu has been termi nated indefinitely and is not likely to return to nu fraternity house will soon be either used as a student residence or the home of a sorority sigma nu was suspended indefinitely for hazing new members in the spring september 11 attacks remembered by jessica glowinski news writer as the world pauses to remember sept 11th lehigh will commemorate the first year anniversary of the terrorist attacks with five days of special events the events will include a moment of silence and a memorial service next wednesday as well as multiple speeches and media presenta tions throughout next week the highlight of the week is the memorial service which will be held wednesday at 4 p.m at packer memorial church the keynote speaker will be dr kelly close who graduated from lehigh in 1992 and is now the national coordinator of disaster volunteers for the american red cross just one hour after the attacks last year close flew into new york to help with the crisis other speakers at the service will include president gregory farrington provost ronald yoshida university chaplain dr lloyd steffen and two members of the student senate j.p matychak the senate president and meagan meier the chair of the senate's sept 11th memorial committee earlier on wednesday there will be a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m and will be followed by the ringing of the carillon bells the bells will also be rung at 9:03 a.m 9:43 a.m 10:00 a.m and 12 noon to remember those who died in the attacks also on wednesday the zoellner arts center will be showing an hbo documen tary in memoriam new first friday set to light up the night by tucker hottes news writer free food music activities and a chance to explore what south side merchants have to offer await students and community members during first friday an event that occurs in south bethlehem on the first friday of every month friday's event will also feature light up the night a ceremony where bethlehem mayor don cunningham and president gregory farrington will activate new lights on the south side this is the culmi nation of work done by the city of bethlehem and the universi ty to make the south side more inviting in the evening the cer emony begins at 7:30 p.m at the corner of new street and fourth street the lights are scheduled to go on at 7:45 philadelphia band the unpronounceable is scheduled to appear at the corner of new street and morton street three of the band members are lehigh alumni and they have appeared at lehigh's moonlight cafe several times band member dan kinsley said it's great to come back and play to a hometown crowd we're very happy to be involved in first friday as it means people are out and about and looking for fun the band is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m merchants from third and fourth streets will stay open later than normal business hours and will be offering free and reduced priced goods and services students are encouraged to go explore what the southside has to offer in the way of food and enter tainment more information about local merchants
