on their color plates in the physical exam ination are asked to report to the department of psychology room 112 packer hall between 3 and 4:30 on tuesday wednesday or thurs day of next week for their forensic chemistry was discussed in a lec ture by dr j hunt wilson pro fessor of physical chemistry at la fayette and formerly instructor in chemistry at lehigh at a pre-med ical society meeting wednesday evening in packard laboratory forensic chemistry is chemistry used in the administration of jus tice according to dr wilson some of the most notable cases where this form of chemistry is used are poison cases counterfeiting autop sies in murder trials and in the testing of ink to show the age of any questionable documents classifies poisons in crime dr wilson described only one phase of forensic chemistry toxol ogy toxology deals with the de tection and estimation of poison in dead bodies dr wilson classified the different poisons according to chemistry and also told of the methods by which these poisons are i detected and analyzed modern toxology was started in 1787 and has since played an im portant part in clearing up some of the most baffling crimes in history dr wilson then cited a number of gruesome cases where poisons had been used to commit seemingly un solvable murders the murders were solved by toxologists a short discussion followed the lecture faculty study the only require ment is that every man must report regularly to his tutor said dr gip son english system specializes the mastery of a certain definite field of study is emphasized under the english system of education while the education received in the american universities is of a much more general nature there are no regular periods of examinations in the english schools that compare generates a three phase current at a fundamental fre quency of 60 cycles and its third fifth and seventh harmonics the machine is driven by an adjustable speed of 60 horse-power motor professor seyfert states that it can be used to supply frequencies varying from 30 cycles to 500 cycles of a sinusoidal wave form to excite the 150,000 volt transformer used for high voltage tests to produce non-sinusoidal wave forms for spe cial tests on motors transformers and rectifiers and to provide ma terial for harmonic wave analysis and synthesis professor seyfert said this is the finest and most versatile piece of equipment ever added to the electrical engineering laboratory and it will be especially useful for the continuation of research work of many kinds eight lehigh professors attend stein berg 35 was the only man elected to the art board the new staff under the super vision of the retiring staff will do most of the work on the next two issues this is a continuation of a plan inaugurated last year which proved successful the house party issue of the burr will appear on april 22 definite plans have not been made as yet the importance and history of toxology as a phase of forensic chemistry was discussed in a lec ture by dr j hunt wilson pro fessor of physical chemistry at la fayette and formerly instructor in chemistry at lehigh at a pre-med ical society meeting wednesday evening in packard laboratory forensic chemistry is chemistry used in the administration of jus tice according to dr wilson some of the most notable cases where this form of chemistry is used are poison cases counterfeiting autop sies in murder trials and in the testing of ink to show the age of any questionable documents classifies poisons in crime dr wilson described only one phase of forensic chemistry toxol ogy toxology deals with the de tection and estimation of poison in dead bodies dr wilson classified the different poisons according to chemistry and also told of the methods by which these poisons are i detected and analyzed modern toxology was started in 1787 and has since played an im portant part in clearing up some of the most baffling crimes in history dr wilson then cited a number of gruesome cases where poisons had been used to commit seemingly un solvable murders the murders were solved by toxologists a short discussion followed the lecture faculty to dance cairns gives talk a comparison of the educational and social life of the colleges of england and america was discussed by dr lawrence h gipson head of the department of history and gov ernment at a bull session wednes day night at the omega phi sigma fraternity house according to dr gipson one of the most outstanding differences in the educational systems of amer ican and english colleges lies in the manner of the supervision of stu dies by the university authorities in the english college a student is not required to attend any lec tures or classes throughout his years of study the only require ment is that every man must report regularly to his tutor said dr gip son english system specializes the mastery of a certain definite field of study is emphasized under the english system of education while the education received in the american universities is of a much more general nature there are no regular periods of examinations in the english schools that compare to those of american colleges un der their system a man takes at the end of his years of study a very complete examination in his spe cialized field dr gipson said dr gipson continued with a dis cussion of the social life of the eng lish universities he stated that there is nothing in the english col leges that really compares with the fraternity system of american col leges dr gipson gathered most of his information about english colleges when he attended lincoln colege oxford for three years as a rhodes scholar frosh regulations will cease at 7 45 monday morning drown hall will harmonic test ing set was received last week by the electrical engineering depart ment and has been installed in the basement of packard laboratory this machine according to pro fessor seyfert generates a three phase current at a fundamental fre quency of 60 cycles and its third fifth and seventh harmonics the machine is driven by an adjustable speed of 60 horse-power motor professor seyfert states that it can be used to supply frequencies varying from 30 cycles to 500 cycles of a sinusoidal wave form to excite the 150,000 volt transformer used for high voltage tests to produce non-sinusoidal wave forms for spe cial tests on motors transformers and rectifiers and to provide ma terial for harmonic wave analysis and synthesis professor seyfert said this is the finest and most versatile piece of equipment ever added to the electrical engineering laboratory and it will be especially useful for the continuation of research work of many kinds eight lehigh professors attend mathematical meeting eight members of the department of mathematics attended the meet ing of the american mathematical society at columbia university march 25 and 26 dr s c cairns instructor in semi automatic equipment featured the annual electrical engineering in spection trip thursday friday and saturday of last week a group of eight electrical engineers headed by h c knutson instructor in the department took the trip the hudson avenue generating station of the brooklyn edison com pany was visited thursday morn ing mr laudenschlager 28 mr billman 31 and mr sordin 31 employees of the company showed and explained the automatic elec trical operated fuel hoists generat ing units and the function of the test laboratories they were also shown the company's newly equip ped master control room after lunch the group visited the new central subway station at 126 w 53rd street there they inspect ed the remote control system and the interlocking switch system at the columbus circle terminal at the wabc studios of the colum bia broadcasting system they wit nessed a radio and television pro gram in progress the american telephone and telegraph company the westing house lamp company and the em pire state building were visited in turn the inspection trip was ter minated at roxy's theatre saturday afternoon predicts change in type of articles to be published edward fleischer arts 33 was named editor in chief of the lehigh review and c brooks peters man aging editor in elections held at drown hall thursday evening fleischer was formerly managing editor of the publication and news editor of the brown and white he is president of delta omicron theta and a member of pi delta epsilon national honorary journalistic fra ternity according to fleischer a vigor ous shakeup will be made in the type of articles running in the re view and their make-up we in tend to function he said as a magazine instead of an activity the review boards passed a mo tion to raise the price of the pub lication to 2 a price which had been customary until the reduction this year officers elected to executive posi tions were robert s davis bus iness manager fritz keck adver tising
