jersey governor christie whitman will speak sun june 2 in front of 1,200 graduates at the 134th commencement ceremony at goodman stadium senior class president peter auerbach said he and the class of 2002 are honored to have whitman as the ceremony's speaker we believe former gov whitman is the kind of speaker who will inspire our class because of her record of achieve photo courtesy of internal relations ment in balancing environmen tal and economic goals auerbach said her accom plishments demonstrate that you can be personally successful while also making a difference in other people's lives president gregory farrington said he believes that whitman will provide a strong message to the graduates and audience as head of the epa whitman is continuing her record of forging strong partner ships among citizens govern ment and business to produce measurable environmental results of cleaner air water and land farrington said at lehigh our students learn that such partner ships are key to success in work and life a number of seniors however said they were displeased with the class officers decision for a speaker i am disappointed in the uni versity's choice for our speaker jason allen 02 said a lot of other schools are able to get notable people such as bill cosby or bill clinton why do we keep bringing in governors like tom ridge and now christie whitman rob motch 02 agreed with allen 1 was hoping they the class officers would be able to attract someone with national recogni tion outside of politics especial pandinis slated to open april 2 by lauren eisner after numerous delays from construction asbestos italian eatery to open doors news writer dining services will tenta tively be opening pandinis a restaurant featuring italian cuisine april 2 after construc tion issues delayed its initial opening a number of times located on the second floor of the university center pandinis will provide yet another outlet for lehigh student dining the planning was based on student requests at pandinis there will be dif ferent types of pizzas calzones salads sandwiches and pastas mike luppori manager of wood catering said it will have pretty much everything pandinis will be open even when the rest of the uc is closed as it will have restrooms and run on a separate heating and air conditioning system this includes late night hours barry gaal associate vice pres ident for business services said the idea for pandinis has been in the works for a while now the concept was developed about two years ago as part of the dining services master plan for food venues gaal said it was phase 3 of a 3-phase project the mein bowl and salsa rico were installed in the food court in june 2001 the design of this new lehigh restaurant will be that of a more old world/modern combo look very unique in its design but the menu will do a lot of the selling luppori said the renovations for pandinis have taken longer than expect ed many students such as maria vultaggio 05 are now impatient it annoys me vultaggio said every time i get coffee at baker's junction i think why isn't that done yet student interest in the opening of pandinis has not gone unno ticed by the lehigh community i regret the delays and have li&w photo tr autumn cruz kept the student senate aware of the delays gaal said i do apologize to the students for the delay and appreciate their patience pandinis is expected to be a success with lehigh students according to luppori i'm really looking forward to it luppori said it's going to be as successful as when we opened subversions on sundays many factors contributed to the delay in the opening pf pandinis according to director for facilities planning and renova tion patricia chase the area of pandinis construction needed a construction continues in pandinis on the uc's second floor dining services said they hope to have it open by april 2 english department loses professor by jasmine foreman news writer james r frakes professor in the english department passed away wed march 13 at the age of 77 frakes was a member of the lehigh family from 1958-2001 and the edmund w fairchild professor in american studies in 1969 he was awarded the outstanding teacher award by the student body according to the morning call frakes was born in washington county his parents were the late byron and helen weis frakes he is survived by his wife of 54 years doris j yingling frakes son jonathan s and three grandchildren frakes was predeceased by his son daniel m in 1997 he received his bachelor's degree from pennsylvania state university in 1948 a year later a master's from the university of chicago and a doctorate in 1952 from the university of pennsylvania frakes was also a coast guard veteran of world war 11 according to the morning call english professor peter beidler said he was totally devoted to the life of the mind and to the welfare of his students frakes area of expertise was american literature realism 20th century fiction and modern poetry he wrote several books and publications during his life time frakes will be missed by the lehigh community and his col leagues he was one of a kind said scott gordon associate profes sor
