the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 30 tuesday february 19 2002 all the lehigh news first drexler new logo better received by community byjohnmisinco assistant news editor for the second time in three months lehigh has introduced a new logo only this time it's final the new design was created after countless students faculty and alumni voiced discontent with the original proposed logo the logo we've ended up at takes this feedback into consider ation said brad drexler vice president of university relations at a student senate meeting thursday the open book and heart which are derived from the uni versity seal remain in the new logo these elements were incorporated in the old logo but were removed in the original proposed design in addition the typeface in the new logo is a serif font the same as in the old logo the pro posed logo used a more modern looking sans serif font instead the shield in the new logo is also the same shape as in the old one while the new design differs little from the old one it incor porates some features intro duced in the proposed logo namely the use of brown as the main color drexler said that it is a true brown color and not the same brick brown shade used in b&wphoto courtesy ofsavethelogo.com the proposed logo although that shade looked brown on paper it appeared as dark red when viewed on some computer monitors drexler said the new logo simplifies the old one but more subtly than the proposed logo did the proposed logo bottom will be replaced by the new logo top which uses a rich brown as the main color aa meets in catacombs by amanda macmillan b&wphoto by sam falzone the campus-wide faculty author reception which was held thursday in the alumni memorial building recognized faculty members who had published books in 2000 and 2001 assistant news editor alcoholics anonymous has been meeting in packer chapel to offer support to members of lehigh valley known as the catacombs group because of their meeting location in the bowels of packer chapel the organi zation has been helping stu dents and community members since november 1989 at one time the group members were primarily lehigh students although recently the group has been made up of mostly bethlehem residents with just a few stu dents the catacombs group holds meetings thursdays at 7 p.m alcoholics anonymous is one of the most valuable resources for people struggling with alcohol abuse yet few students know that they can attend meetings on campus and get help for an alcohol problem for 12 years a chapter of pandinis to open in march byjohnmisinco assistant news editor after numerous delays in construction pandinis a new italian eatery on the second floor of the university center is set to open next month we were hoping to have it open by spring break said barry gaal associate vice presi dent for business services gaal said however the opening may be delayed a week while renovations are completed construction on the restaurant located where the former pete's arena was has been delayed many times most recently because of asbestos removal pat chase director of facili ties planning and renovations said the asbestos was found in acoustical plaster used in the room's soundproof walls as long as you don't touch it it's fine chase said too many holes however were drilled into the material during the initial demolition and air quality tests had to be per formed asbestos removal began at the end of january after tests were completed when they did get started in there the time schedule was pushed back because there was more asbestos than they original ly thought said mike lupori resident district manager for wood catering demolition is now complete and positive construction has started chase said renovations were set to begin in the fall but were delayed because the architect didn't com plete redesigned plans on time gaal also said noise from the construction was interfering with the conference rooms on the third floor further delaying the process when completed the new eatery will seat around 50 people and have a similar setup to grace lounge in the upper u.c it will also have restrooms inside so it can remain open later at night than the other dining facilities in the u.c chase said pandinis menu will include pizzas calzones salads sand wiches and pastas lupori said the kitchen will be equipped with a state of the art pizza oven i think it's going to be a neat place and students will like it when it opens chase said still some students are upset by the delays becky lapidow 03 said it's kind of ridiculous -
