the brown and white all the lehigh news first vol 109 no 29 friday february 8 2002 01 graduate remembered by nora linsgheid news editor mark bishar 01 was remembered in a memorial wednesday in packer church a january graduate bishar was killed in a car accident in philadelphia mon jan 28 according to the philadelphia daily news bishar was killed after a speeding car smashed into the vehicle in which he was a passenger the driver of the car christopher corso was uninjured bishar who was working as an electrical engineer at the naval services warfare center at the philadelphia naval shipyard graduated in january with a degree in computer engineering he was pursuing a masters degree from villanova university university chaplain lloyd steffen led mourners in remem bering bishar through friends shared memories kayti brosnan who spoke at the memorial service said she wanted to lighten the mood with stories about bishar she talked about a time when bishar came back late from winter break he told her he was late was because he had married a friend of his who was going to be deported mark was an amazing friend brosnan said he would do any thing for anyone at any cost courtney riccardelli 03 met bishar during her freshman year and fondly remembered his energetic personality he could make anyone laugh and light up the whole room with his crooked smile and glowing eyes riccardelli said he was someone who could make you happy just by being around him bishar was born in staten island and raised in princeton nj where he attended princeton high school he enjoyed computers chess playing basketball skiing and traveling he was one written assignment away from becoming a black belt in tae kwon do as an eagle scout mark took hikes in calgary ore and on the photo courtesy ofeduardo freyes appalachian trail he was fluent in german and had stayed with his mother's family in austria several times eduardo freyre 02 said he has been coping with the loss by spending time with friends of mark and remem bering the good memories they shared freyre said it is still hard to believe that only 24 hours before his death i had told him to drive home safely and that i would see him and we would hang out next weekend i just wish i had time to tell him that i really did love him like a true friend one who you could count on for anything at anytime mark bishar 01 was the victim of a hit-and-run accident last week a memorial service was held for him wednesday computer safety discussed by nora linscheid news editor fbi computer crime squad director scott crabtree dis cussed the dangers of provid ing personal information on the internet in a lecture monday crabtree who served as the main interrogator of terry nichols and a chief spokesman for the fbi during much of the investigation of the oklahoma city bombing said criminals are likely to target the internet because there is little regula tion he also said it is easy to be anonymous and the internet provides access to unlimited information crabtree defined computer crime as when a computer system is affected by an inten tional action such as intru sions or viruses when these crimes are reported his squad conducts non-intrusive investi gations based on the com plaint collects evidence iden tifies if it is an isolated incident or part of a larger plan and presents information to the b&w photo security issues tuition will rise in 2003 by john misinco assistant news editor students and their families may notice soon that their pockets are lighter undergraduate tuition will increase 1,040 next year to a total of 25,980 president gregory farrington and provost ron yoshida said in a campus wide e-mail sent tuesday in addition average room and board charges will increase 380 this brings the average total cost of attending lehigh to 33,710 the 200 technolo gy fee will however remain the same yoshida and margaret plympton vice president of finance and administration were unavailable for comment the plan was approved last friday by the board of trustees josh eaton 04 doesn't agree with the increase well that happens every year and it's depressing eaton said i was really hoping they would take the initiative and lower tuition i think they could really limit the amount of useless stuff they buy and really look at the ways they try to improve the university heather fisher 04 said she thinks the increase is unneces sary it's crazy because this school gets enough as it is she said others were not bothered by the decision i think it's come at a hard time for the economy enrique luna 03 said that's okay as long as they keep up the educational standards of the university noah white 04 said he was not surprised by the increase and that lehigh should operate like any other business every business raises its prices over the years so it is pretty much necessary white said according to the e-mail tuition covers 53 percent of lehigh's operating costs grants donations contracts and the endowment make up the rest for the 2001-2002 school year tuition increased 940 and room and board 290 during the 1999-2000 year tuition increased 850 and room and board 220 see
