the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 27 friday february 1 2002 all the lehigh news first up til dawn raises funds by regina linskey and mia yantis news writers more than 500 students gath ered sunday to eat ice cream and raise money for children with chronic illnesses the event sponsored by panhel and udderly delicious restaurant raised 350 for up til dawn a national fundraiser for st jude's research hospital mark reynolds manager of udderly delicious was sur prised at the turnout i think it went very well for us reynolds said we opened in april last year and this was the most people we have ever seen louise shaw 04 a member of the up til dawn executive board worked for three hours on sunday shaw said that there was a good showing from frater nities sororities sports teams and other lehigh students we think it was a very good success and we hope they will do it again next year shaw said sue schoelle 04 also worked the counter i had a really good time working although i am not the best at scooping ice-cream schoelle said beth silverberg 04 a member of alpha omicron pi attended with her sorority b&w photo by autumn cruz you could really tell that the lehigh community came togeth er she said erin stanton 05 enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the community an event like this is cool because it gets us off the campus and into the town she said nationwide 60 colleges and universities are participating in the up til dawn program the lehigh division is led by an executive council they have been planning to recruit students from every fraternity sorority res idence hall and student club and organization gamma phi beta sorority members rebecca morley 04 and sue schoelle 04 serve up smiles and sweets at the up til dawn fundraiser which was held at udderly delicious restaurant the event raised 350 for st jude's children's hospital jan grad killed in hit run accident by tracey lomrantz news editor january graduate mark bishar 02 died in a hit-and run automobile accident late tuesday night according to the philadelphia inquirer bishar's 1968 ford convert ible was rear-ended by a speeding 1995 eagle talon at the delaware river waterfront causing his car to burst into flames bishar was thrown out on impact he suf fered burns and was pronounced dead 20 minutes later at st agnes medical center the driver of the talon and the passenger ran away immedi ately after the accident police later picked up the passenger at a gas station and identified him as the man in the car no arrest warrants had been issued for the suspects as of press time bishar 22 graduated in january with a bachelor's degree in com puter engineering he was a resident of the south philadelphia suburb of bella vista bishar is the second member of the lehigh community to die in an automobile accident this winter nathan yip 05 died dec 30 after the car he was traveling in flipped while nego tiating a tight curve subversions to open sundays byjohnmisinco senate also approves funds to make fundraising easier for student organiwtions assistant news editor while that was not possible because it would cost too much opening subversions instead was reached as a compromise jon-paul matychak the ulic committee chair said our commit tee recognized that nothing was open on this side of campus on sunday hopefully we'll be able to offer wood and the university more business and provide students with another place to eat on sunday mike lupori resident district manager for wood said the primary reason for not opening more dining facilities on sunday is labor labor is not easy to find in this area at this time he said subversions will remain open sundays until the end of march the program will then be evaluated to see if it is suc cessful finan cially it's going to have to be operationally sound to continue lupori said it is going to have to at least pay for the labor most students are pleased with the new hours finding a bite to eat on weekends will soon be easier for students subversions located in the ulrich student center will now be open sundays beginning this weekend the announcement was made at the student senate meeting tuesday the idea surfaced last semes ter when members of the senate university life improvement committee ulic approached wood catering about opening rathbone dining hall on week ends student senate hjipiidairie on sunday generally you don't have many options espe cially if you sleep in late and miss brunch aaron bergmann 03 said vince crossley 05 said he is also happy with the new hours a lot of my friends really wanted it open sundays and they were mad it was closed he said it will be really popular especial ly sunday nights hours this sunday feb 6 will be
