the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 23 friday december 7 2001 all the lehigh news first new logo brings controversy by greg meyer news editor e-mails have been circulating among alumni faculty and students spreading a message of discontent over the decision to change lehigh's logo after almost 10 years brad drexler vice president of university relations said the idea for a new logo was first discussed last december as part of an effort to depict the university in a more posi tive light according to drexler the new logo was chosen for its simplicity in design and ability to reproduce well in various media lehigh university including digitally and on clothing it was also decided that the black which was so prominent in the old logo should be replaced with a brown representing the school's colors the official statement from the university said the new look is more contemporary and portrays lehigh as an lehigh university the old lehigh logo on the left has been in use since 1992 the new logo is being phased in as part of a project to change the way the university depicts itself to others institution with the most competitive program and facilities the student senate discussed the new logo at its meeting tuesday an overwhelming majority of the senators disliked the new logo residence hall established by marissa just news writer an international house will open in warren square apart ments in fall 2002 created by the office of residential services the international office of student affairs and the international relations office the international house will be off campus special interest housing designed to accommo date 22 students it is being created to provide an opportuni ty for students interested in learning about different cultures to live in a diverse setting half of the residents will be american students and half will be international students doug haugen the residential life coordinator for residence life thinks that the international house is great idea haugen said he hopes that students are looking for some where exciting to live this is not the first time an international house has been established on campus according to valeric yonker the international student adviser there have been similar houses in the past but it was a student lead initiative yonker said she believes this house will succeed because it is linked to offices on campus which will provide some finan cial support and help with pro gramming services throughout the year the house will provide special events for the residents for example one of the programs may include musical dinners focused on a variety of countries there will also be sport ing events similar to the intramu rals that eveiy residence hall has the opportunity to participate in other programs may include international movies and lan b&w photo by meghan meier guage exchanges and a forum to promote understanding of dif ferent cultures the students residing in the house will decide the special programs that take place the programs will be closely linked to the modern languages and literature department and the international relations office and will be decided next year when the residents move in the international house has two large living rooms two study rooms and one kitchen a gryphon will also reside in the building the international house will provide living space for incoming freshmen sophomores juniors seniors and graduate students who prove that they have special inter ests in die house yonker said she believes the house will be filled josh bombino 03 dana chehansky 02 and devon battaglia 02 star in neil simon's fools the last performance of the production is tonight at 8 in zoellner arts center taggart tech fee a success by greg meyer news editor vice provost for information resources bruce taggart met with the student senate tuesday to report on the success and future plans of the new technolo gy fee which began this year since the inception of the fee 240 new computers have been added to public sites including fairchild-martindale and linderman libraries according to taggart over the next few semesters older com puters will continue to be replaced and new ones will be added where necessary the microsoft office soft ware that has been made avail able has been picked up or downloaded by 1,700 students cds are still available to be picked up in the fairchild martindale library taggart said this software has been especially useful to students and professors in the colleges of business and engineering the plan to increase the uni versity's bandwidth from 9 megabits to 45 megabits was accomplished successfully taggart pointed out however that the campus is already showing a need for even more off campus students now use fastnet as their internet service provider this has made it so off-campus students can have 24-hour access to the internet without a
