the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 14 friday october 26 2001 all the lehigh news first teach-in gives insight into attacks by regina linskey news writer a teach-in was held monday evening in lewish lab to discuss the the terrorist attacks of sept 11 and the war against the taliban in afghanistan the teach in - defined as a group of people gathering and talking critically and historically about issues that affect us most - was co-moderated by john pettegrew of the history depart ment and seth moglen of the english department it featured faculty from differ ent departments including larry silberstein in the berman center for jewish studies ruth setton of english and the berman center alex levine of philosophy and amardeep singh of english history gradu ate students jim higgins and erwin pantel also spoke there is a nice random quality to who is facing you pettegrew said but we can all agree on the deep fear of the power of war - it is an extreme ly dangerous human invention the first hour of discussion was occupied by the professors and graduate students bringing up a topic question or fact relating to the recent events the second hour was an open forum for stu dents or faculty to ask questions and present their thoughts christopher schnaars 04 attended the event and thought it was refreshing to get other views on the recent events rather than those of the govern ment and the media each member of the panel had a different point of view and the other did not have to agree with everything said to gain something from this schnaars said after pettegrew's introduc tion mogle.n discussed the importance of questions sur rounding the event critical thinking about what is happening is your deepest patriot ic responsibility at this time moglen said will this war make b&wphoto by autumn cruz us safe it is our civic duty to ask pantel provided a quick overview of the history of afghanistan and compared it to that of the united states citing die ever-present territorial fighting as one of the main differences he said that america is unfamiliar with such continual violence david goldfeder 02 a member of the teach-in audience gets involved in a heated discussion after the faculty presented their views of the sept 11 attacks hatzai speaks by michael mcconnell news writer stephen j hatzai spoke to a crowd of students monday in the kenner auditorium of ulrich student center with a simple message when you drink be smart hatzai has been completely paralyzed on his left side since april of 1992 when he was drunk at an off-campus party at syracuse university and fell three stories to the ground after trying to swing himself from a balcony he was to have graduated in the spring of that year i'm not telling you not to drink hatzai said that would just be ridiculous instead he spoke of the importance of knowing limits because he was drunk he was not aware of the danger he was putting himself into which ultimately lead to his paralysis hatzai said that his lifestyle at college was reckless and his mindset was that he felt invin cible when told once that he was going to drink himself to death he responded if i'm going to die i might as well have fun doing it using examples of college students dying because of poor decisions they made while intoxicated such as driving drunk getting caught in burning buildings choking on their own vomit and falling through greenhouse roofs hatzai reinforced the dangers of being too drunk you think that it's going to be this guy or that guy but one of those days it might be you he said hatzai was upbeat about his situation while looking at a video of himself before the accident he made several jokes about his bad 80s haircut and clothing style he also spoke of many experi ences he had in college including poor grades encounters with girls and good times i'm not going to lie to you hatzai said i had a great time garbarino talks about parenting by william brobston news writer dr james garbarino identi fied the major challenges to good parenting and their solu tions in a presentation tuesday in packard auditorium today you have to be really on top of your game to reduce your risks and be a good parent he said garbarino has determined specific factors that are imped ing the efforts of good parenting they include imperfect knowl edge of child development diffi cult child temperament teens leading secret lives toxic social environments imperfect parents and the breakdown of adult authority the big question that 1 try to answer is why does parental love and good intentions not guarantee the best outcome garbarino said one in five parents around the country say that they have one child that is so difficult that it makes it difficult to lead a normal life he said temperament is the raw material that parents have to work with a child's tempera ment comes with birth but it is what parents do with that tem perament that is most impor tant garbarino said if you have a challenging child and you adapt to it you can be a good parent garbarino said you have two paths that you can follow one is to compensate for the child and the other is to train the child a child is the combination of the positive and negative factors in his life he said no one factor will create a good or bad child it's the whole package garbarino said one
