the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 8 friday september 28 2001 all the lehigh news first afghan refugee shares thoughts by nora linscheid assistant news editor lehigh graduate and afghan refugee homa naderi gave a personal perspective wednesday on the situation in her country and the recent terrorist attacks at lamberton hall naderi who is now working for cnn spoke about the history of the afghan con flict the country's status today and expressed her support for the united states according to naderi afghanistan has been at war for a long time earlier this century russia had taken over the country using communism as their means of control the united states fought against russia but as soon as the russians left the united states turned their back against afghanistan naderi said that is when the taliban entered at first when the taliban entered the b&wphoto by mandy walis homa naderi points to different sections of afghanistan to differentiate the areas that are under the taliban control and the areas that are ruled by the northern alliance gender roles changing over time by christine donnelly news writer dr michael kimmel sociolo gist and author gave the third williamson lecture tuesday in whitaker lab about the changes men and women have under gone in the past 30 years kimmel's lecture titled mars and venus or planet earth women and men in the new millennium was a refuta tion of the best-selling self-help book of all time men are from mars women are from venus you are sitting here tonight as the living proof that that book is dead wrong kimmel said in reference to the coeducational system now implemented at lehigh and most universities around the country after all how else could we take the same tests and sit in the same classes with people consid ered so different from us jim mclntosh chair of the sociology and anthropology department introduced kimmel mclntosh taught kimmel in his social problems class at lehigh 30 years ago kimmel transferred to vassar when it became co-edu cational and received subsequent degrees from brown and the university of california at berkeley kimmel spoke of bob williamson founder of the soci ology and anthropology depart ment he said williamson had an amazing sense of cross-cultur al sensitivity especially for a male professor writing at an all male school at that time women's lives were undergoing tremendous changes while men's lives remained somewhat constant kimmel discussed four areas in which women's lives have changed in the past 30 years these areas are identity the workplace the balance between work and family and sexuality kimmel then discussed the rules of manhood as examined 30 years ago they were no sissy stuff be a big wheel meaning get a large paycheck be a sturdy oak support your family and give em hell take risks and go for it men's roles have in fact remained relatively stable kimmel said we want to be a man's man kimmel said that most men do not think of themselves as a gender when hearing the word gender men tend to think of females the most important thing we have to do is to get men to think of themselves as a gender kimmel said erica rosenblum 02 agreed with kimmefs views i thought the lecture was very informative as well as enter taining rosenblum said i was really intrigued by the notion of men and women aligning togeth er to accomplish their goals the williamson lecture is held every two or three years williamson was in attendance at this year's lecture kimmel received international recognition for his work on men and masculinity one of his seven books the gendered society is being used as a textbook at lehigh this year he is also a spokesper son for the national organization for men against sexism senate xiv plans for the new year by greg meyer the student senate spent the majority of its first meeting tuesday discussing how the organization will operate for the year the senate is still deciding what new committees will be created a lot of time was devoted to discussion about forming a research and investi gation committee the committee which will be discussed further at the next meeting will be responsi ble for investigating facts about the university that stu dents would find interesting a breakdown of how student tuition money gets spent the data col lected by this committee will be used by other senate committees to determine what needs to be improved on campus aside from these organiza tional points the senate began news editor student senate tuipdattie tackling some of the issues at hand for the semester a concern about the acade mics portion of lehigh's web site was one item of discus committee pro vides summaries of classes on the web that students can read when choosing courses the senators decided that this information is not fulfilling students needs it was suggested that more detail be put into these course descriptions another topic of discussion was the food service provided to clubs and organizations plan ning programs an idea to create a menu specifically for these types of bulk purchases was suggested senate meetings are open to students who are encouraged to attend students can offer their opinions and ideas at the meetings which are held every other tuesday at 4:20 p.m in kenner theater the next meeting is
