the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 109 no 7 tuesday september 25 2001 all the lehigh news first more than 300 walk in vigil by john misinco b&wphoto by autumn cruz twoftkiors organize candlelight march for unification news writer more than 300 students faculty and administrators marched side by side dirough asa packer campus thursday evening for a unity march and vigil the vigil and march were organized by liz pierson 02 and katie gardner 02 i felt like i needed to do something pierson said this is to show students we're all in diis together pierson and gardner explained that the march was designed to help break down stereotypes and create a sense of unity among students we all need to reach out to each other especially those we don't know gardner said the procession began on university drive in front of taylor college and culminat ed with a vigil in lower grace hall leading the crowd through pouring rain were president farrington provost ron yoshida and other administra tors marches like this remind people that they are part of a community that they're not alone in having their feelings farrington said people on this march will remember it all their lives in remarks to the crowd farrington praised the univer sity for how it has dealt with the tragedies farrington also defended the council of student presidents decision to distribute brown white and yellow ribbons as a symbol of support for the country some students gather outside of taylor college and light candles in preparation for the unity march and vigil organized by two seniors in response to the terrorist attacks of sept 11 psa holds program promoting peace by nora linscheid assistant news editor the lehigh students call for humane understanding and action a program sponsored by the progressive student alliance was held thursday at the ulrich center to urge stu dents to look for ways to con structively respond to the terror ist attack the program which featured various speakers was held as part of the national students day of action jane tarica 04 one of the coordinators of the event sug gested that students write letters to government officials wear ribbons of peace donate to the red cross and sign a poster of support the speakers included university chaplain lloyd steffen political science professor edward morgan moravian college political science professor faramaz farbod dr mohammad bugeighis president of the lehigh valley muslim community organization and nancy tate coordinator of the local peace and justice organiza tion attendees were also invited up to the podium when the speakers were finished steffen opened by acknowl edging that while there is still a common anger and sadness regarding the attacks americans have not formed a consensus on retaliation there is a deep unity twins help set world record by regina linsky news writer many people may think they are seeing double because of the seemingly high number of twins at lehigh in the junior class alone there are at least seven pairs of twins one identical twin pair deborah and lauren schwartz 03 celebrated their multiplicity at the 26th annual twins day festival the schwartz sisters were one pair out of 2,740 sets of identically dressed twins from around the nation and world who gathered in twinsville ohio the twins drove more than nine hours to attend the festi val which they learned about from family members who live near twinsville the highlight was definitely meeting other people and having our pictures taken lauren said my sister and i felt like celebrities their attendance at the festival helped set a record in the guiness book of world records for the largest gathering of twins ever in one place at one time b&w photo courtesy of lauren schwartz deborah schwartz 03 and lauren schwartz 03 pose with other twins at the festival who helped to set a world record see vigil page 4 see psa page 5 football team defeats princeton 34-10 see page 16 . sports 12-16 soccer feature 13 men's soccer 12 women's soccer j g drown writers series addresses tragedy see page 3 news 1-5 college news briefs 2 bethlehem briefs 5 artificial blood may open new doors see page 7 science 7-9 science briefs 7 artificial heart 8 quick an average of 13 people are killed a year by vending machines falling on them them source:http7/www.uselessfacts.net
