closet of the delta upsilon house tuesday evening at 8 o'clock destroyed a section of their east living room and resulted in the destruction of 3,000 worth of property according to a recent estimate the members of the fraternity assembled at a meeting on the sec ond floor heard the crackling of the fire below and found flames mount ing the walls of the living room a call was sent to the liberty fire house and efforts were made to check the blaze the liberty fire department first reached the blaze but found the flames well under control due to the work of the fraternity men hose lines were connected and the fire was quickly extinguished aid was also rendered by the south side fire department which had respond ed to a later call drums badly burned the charred living room showed the most serious effects of the fire as the walls were badly damaged and most of the furniture was scorched beyond repair the closet in which the blaze began originally held several overcoats and a set of drums but all of these articles were burned beyond recognition in addition to the losses due to the fire water also took its toll of the fraternity property and left most of the rooms on the first floor bad ly marked a dining room on the floor below was also reported to be badly water soaked the entire loss was covered by insurance fire chief a e anderson who investigated the fire believed that flames originated in a basket lo cated in one corner of the closet which had been used as a recep ticle for cigarette ashes fraternity men on the other hand insisted that ashes had not been placed in the basket for at least a half hour and looked for another explana tion for the blaze a large crowd which gathered to view the fire congested traffic for many blocks and the grounds sur rounding the at 8 p m monday in packard auditorium the lecture will be the third of present series of college lectures by faculty mem bers the seventeenth-century radical is a man who favored divorce re plied dr riley did that make him a radical asked the reporter it helped to divorce wasn't as common in england then as it is now and a divorced person was looked upon askance then other things which this man did helped to make him a radical for instance said professor riley this man be lieved that the people had the right to depose a king put him to death and to establish a republic that is radical isn't it it probably was then as a newspaper man you should be interested in knowing that this man was one of the first and strongest advocates of the free dom of the press he even wrote a pamphlet on that subject sounds interesting but who was the man john milton he wrote paradise lost didn't he asked the reporter with an air of showing the professor that he at least knew something about the fa mous poet yes answered dr riley as the reporter feeling that his abysmal ignorance of english literature might be disclosed prepared to go but i expect to discuss his prose instead of his poetry milton wrote many pamphlets on various sub jects and it was his liberal opinions on religion marriage censorship and politics that led many of his fellowmen to consider him as a libertine who would be tied by no obligation to god or man banquet will be given for song contest winners mcconn speaks scabbard and blade pledges 16 new men new alumnibulletin appears this week cooperative buying among le high fraternities was discussed at the meeting of the interfraternity council held monday in drown hall a report concerning coopera tive buying by fraternities in other schools was given by c f hull lehigh's representative at the na tional interfraternity conference held during the thanksgiving holi days the h f behrhorst and son inc of pittsburgh is the company who proposed for this cooperative buying plan it is not absolutely ne cessary to have this particular com pany supply the houses the company proposed to save between 7 and 12 per cent on the cost of staples if the plan is start ed in february the company will send a representative to each house about twice a month the steward will order from him and the goods will be shipped directly to the house it is believed that one month's credit will be extended to the houses save caterer's wages the cooperative plan will be in stituted with the idea of saving by purchasing all staples from the same concern there is a great dif ference between cooperative buying and having the caterer do the buy ing for the houses the high wages of the caterer make expenses very high oregon state college is the only college in which the caterer system has been found economical cooper ative buying is used in practically every college and university with good results a representative from h.f behr horst and son inc will be here to interview the stewards interested in the plan about the 14th of this month lack of cooperation among the stewards will destroy the suc cess of this plan will discuss action the individual fraternities will discuss cooperative buying and fur ther action will probably be taken at an informal meeting of those houses interested in the project within the next two weeks accord ing to r c clark president of the interfraternity council he also stated that if the plan were agree able it would be tried next semes ter the plan will go into effect if 15 houses agree to join revision of the present rushing knocked down everything in its path frater nity men experienced trouble in jumping through a window phone rings in response to additional alarms fire department units continued to flock toward the scene of the blaze until hose and ladder carts could be seen everywhere even the chiefs of the police and fire departments were there then the phone tinkled and through the shriek of sirens and closet of the delta upsilon house tuesday evening at 8 o'clock destroyed a section of their east living room and resulted in the destruction of 3,000 worth of property according to a recent estimate the members of the fraternity assembled at a meeting on the sec ond floor heard the crackling of the fire below and found flames mount ing the walls of the living room a call was sent to the liberty fire house and efforts were made to check the blaze the liberty fire department first reached the blaze but found the flames well under control due to the work of the fraternity men hose lines were connected and the fire was quickly extinguished aid was also rendered by the south side fire department which had respond ed to a later call drums badly burned the charred living room showed the most serious effects of the fire as the walls were badly damaged and most of the furniture was scorched beyond repair the closet in which the blaze began originally held several overcoats and a set of drums but all of these articles were burned beyond recognition in addition to the losses due to the fire water also took its toll of the fraternity property and left most of the rooms on the first floor bad ly marked a dining room on the floor below was also reported to be badly water soaked the entire loss was covered by insurance fire chief a e anderson who investigated the fire believed that flames originated in a basket lo cated in one corner of the closet which had been used as a recep ticle for cigarette ashes fraternity men on the other hand insisted that ashes had not been placed in the basket for at least a half hour and looked for another explana tion for the blaze a large crowd which gathered to view the fire congested traffic for many blocks and the grounds sur rounding the fraternity house were crowded by interested spectators new york alumni to award prizes the annual inter-company rifle match of the m s & t department for possession of the american le gion shooting at 8 p m monday in packard auditorium the lecture will be the third of present series of college lectures by faculty mem bers the seventeenth-century radical is a man who favored divorce re plied dr riley did that make him a radical asked the reporter it helped to divorce wasn't as common in england then as it is now and a divorced person was looked upon askance then other things which this man did helped to make him a radical for instance said professor riley this man be lieved that the people had the right to depose a king put him to death and to establish a republic that is radical isn't it it probably was then as a newspaper man you should be interested in knowing that this man was one of the first and strongest advocates of the free dom of the press he even wrote a pamphlet on that subject sounds interesting but who was the man john milton he wrote paradise lost didn't he asked the reporter with an air of showing the professor that he at least knew something about the fa mous poet yes answered dr riley as the reporter feeling that his abysmal ignorance of english literature might be disclosed prepared to go but i expect to discuss his prose instead of his poetry milton wrote many pamphlets on various sub jects and it was his liberal opinions on religion marriage censorship and politics that led many of his fellowmen to consider him as a libertine who would be tied fraternities was discussed at the meeting of the interfraternity council held monday in drown hall a report concerning coopera tive buying by fraternities in other schools was given by c f hull lehigh's representative at the na tional interfraternity conference held during the thanksgiving holi days the h f behrhorst and son inc of pittsburgh is the company who proposed for this cooperative buying plan it is not absolutely ne cessary to have this particular com pany supply the houses the company proposed to save between 7 and 12 per cent on the cost of staples if the plan is start ed in february the company will send a representative to each house about twice a month the steward will order from him and the goods will be shipped directly to the house it is believed that one month's credit will be extended to the houses save caterer's wages the cooperative plan will be in stituted with the idea of saving by purchasing all staples from the same concern there is a great dif ference between cooperative buying and having the caterer do the buy ing for the houses the high wages of the caterer make expenses very high oregon state college is the only college in which the caterer system has been found economical cooper ative buying is used in practically every college and university with good results a representative from h.f behr horst and son inc will be here to interview the stewards interested in the plan about the 14th of this month lack of cooperation among the stewards will destroy the suc cess of this plan will discuss action the individual fraternities will discuss cooperative buying and fur ther action will probably be taken at an informal meeting of those houses interested in the project within the next two weeks accord ing to r c clark president of the interfraternity council he also stated that if the plan were agree able it would be tried next semes ter the plan will go into effect if 15 houses agree to join revision of the present rushing kappa phi and delta tau delta houses were also broken into but estimated losses were ne gligible a whistle shrieked out into the stillness of the night bells clanged and a fire engine churned its way up the heights of south mountain it all happened at the delta up silon fire tuesday evening according to fraternity men the fire was almost out when the engine arrived but firemen don't take trips for nothing in bethlehem . . . they came they saw and they flooded there were two hose lines available so they laid both one chemical and one water then tried to decide which to use with sound effects of burning wood the fire laddies ar gued the merits of chemical and water hose lines until the fraternity men suggested cutting cards to set tle the somewhat pressing issue the answer to the argument came as a surprise . . . someone turned the valve at the fire hydrant and the water under many pounds of pressure gushed out into the house whipped the hose from one side of the room to the other and knocked down everything in its path frater nity men experienced trouble in jumping through a window phone rings in response to additional alarms fire department units continued to flock toward the scene of the blaze until hose and ladder carts could be seen everywhere even the chiefs of the police and fire departments were there then the phone tinkled and through the shriek of sirens and clanging of bells a voice was heard to ask did you call for a fire engine all of the attention of the fire fighters was centered on the ill fated living room but other parts of the house did not escape a drenching according to fraternity men the second floor was well doused with water and even a dining room on a sub-floor was thoroughly soaked the fire inci dentally was put out firemen seek ladder after the departure qf the fire brigades the fraternity men seated themselves on their ruined furni ture to recover from the excitement but the phone rang again . . . this time it was the fire department say asked a voice have you got out ladder up there the fire had been extinguished for at least 10 minutes when one of the men leaned from his room win dow on the second floor below were two frantic figures holding a large blanket by the corners jump shrieked one of the would-be res cuers we'll save you bethlehem pa friday january 8 1932 lafayette professor bombed students allegdly
