the brown and white all the lehigh news first luesday december 5 2uuu vol 108 no 22 yoshida to deliver commencement address by bevin milavsky farrington chooses yoshida to address approximately 400 graduates at january ceremony senior news editor ciate provost and assistant vice president for acade mic affairs at queens college at the city university of new york yoshida has written more than 60 articles on inter disciplinary methods of tackling education problems he and farrington recently collaborated to write darwin goes to college educational competition in the dot-corn world which was published in the november/december issue of the educause review the article discussed the effect technology has on learning as well as some innovative methods of teach ing being tried at lehigh yoshida attended the university of southern california where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1970 a master's degree in excep tional children in 1971 and a ph.d in educational psy chology in 1974 he worked as a lecturer for usc's department of educational psychology and as an education program specialist for the u.s department of education's bureau of education of the handicapped yoshida has served as consulting editor to the journal of school psychology the american journal of mental retardation as well as several other tech nical journals he has also worked as a consultant to more than two dozen school districts and other educational organiza tions including the educational testing service where he is a member of the visiting committee on research roland k ron yoshida provost and vice president for academic affairs will deliver the commencement speech at the jan 14 graduation ceremony president gregory farrington said he chose yoshida as the speaker because of the example he provides 1 have been trying to feature prominent members of the lehigh faculty and extended family as speakers for the january commencement he said ron yoshida is a great example of one and will be a fine speaker the january graduation ceremony is for students who have completed their bachelor's master's or doc torate degrees during the fall semester or during this past summer session yoshida said he is proud to have been named com mencement speaker i am indeed honored to represent the university - faculty staff and students - in making remarks at the january commencement address he said einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge as graduates begin a new chapter of their lives indeed imagination is what will inspire discovery yoshida came to lehigh in 1996 as the dean of the college of education under his leadership lehigh's education program has become one of the highest ranked education programs in the nation before joining lehigh's faculty yoshida was asso photo courtesy of external relations yoshida is also a fellow of the american psychological association he recently served as president of lehigh university's chapter of phi beta kappa his other pro fessional memberships include phi delta kappa and kappa delta pi two education honorary societies yoshida chosen to deliver address to 400 graduates at spring commencement ceremony jan 14 2001 good scholars raise 62,000 for cancer by nora linscheid news writer jake towne 02 representative for theta delta chi fraternity was announced the winner of the 11th annual good scholar election at the nov 27 awards ceremony the grand total raised by all of the participants was 62,000 the awards ceremony was the cul minating aspect of the good scholar election sponsored by theta delta chi a fundraiser to benefit the lehigh valley chapter of the american cancer society a prize of 1000 was awarded to towne and theta delta chi they chose however to donate the prize money to the american cancer society to qualify for the election a candidate must maintain a 3.25 grade point average he and his sponsoring group must also obtain the most 1 contribu tions or votes from students faculty alumni family and friends all candidates attended the awards ceremony with another member of their supporting organization by writing to fraternity alumni as well as asking for votes from students on campus towne was able to raise 16,946 for the cause the second place winner was jennifer antonacci 01 representing alpha phi with a total of 9,830 raised airline tickets to anywhere in the united states canada or mexico as well as a 500 prize were awarded for second place the third place winner christina halstead 01 of the panhellenic council raised 8,067 rachel hansen 01 of gamma phi beta finished fourth in the election with a total of 5,128 associate dean of students jennifer volchko who recently found out that her husband had blocks in his heart and he had to have a quadruple bypass spoke at the event we now live with a disease that is going to be with us for the rest of our lives just like cancer she said my husband is now doing well because there are people out there doing research volchko added that she applauded the participants for raising money for cancer research every year i sit here and it never fails to give me goose-bumps when i see what you all do she said michael zambelli sports director for service electric cable tv 2 was the keynote speaker at the event he said cancer is the second leading cause of death in the united states there are 1.2 million new cases of cancer and next year 550,000 americans will die of the disease the good news is that progress is being made zambelli said fewer people are now dying because of further research and greater treatment charles dyßeyes president of theta delta chi welcomed participants by saying this event is particularly important to him because he has loved ones who have suffered from cancer or are still bat tling the disease zambelli agreed that having people in his life touched by cancer has made him more aware of the need to fight against the disease my daughter called me crying from college saying she had a cancerous cell he said and small-cell cancer also killed a man in my office -
